Petition to Call a General Election

A Petition to call a General Election is currently running, and I've never seen one signed by so many in such a short space of time. Clearly there are a lot of unhappy people in the UK - to put it mildly.

Conservative Central Office are really desperate.

JasonTindallsTan · 24/11/2024 11:25

I voted Labour and I’m more than happy with how they’re getting in mere months into office. Whilst I don’t necessarily think they’re getting everything right I think that everything they are doing is with the express purpose of improving things for the majority. Which after the last 14 years of the self serving spunk monkeys who care about nothing more than how what they’re about to do will impact THEM and their cronies is a refreshing change.

So nope. I’ll not be signing the petition and I shall instead enjoy the 4 year reprieve.

Karmas a bitch isn't it

I misread that first time and thought it said...

Starmers a bitch.

I do wonder, what do the signers thing would happen if Parliament were fool enough to pay any attention to this and did indeed call another GE. It must surely be obvious that if we establish this as a norm and decide that internet petitions override our parliamentary democracy system, that won't be a one time only tactic. They'd essentially be implementing new GEs every few months.

Freeyourminds · 24/11/2024 11:31

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/11/2024 10:47

This is one of the many times that I think all petitions should also have a button to sign for the opposite. Because thinking you get another go at a general election a few months in is batshit crazy.

It is completely batshit crazy. How would that be democracy, for all the people that voted Sorry people disagree, your vote is no longer valid so we’re going to do it again.
Why not just try best out of 3!

Crispynoodle · 24/11/2024 11:32

IMO the people signing this are the type to believe everything on social media especially X whose threads are now right wing propaganda I mean why would anyone want a new election after only 5 months especially after the last 14 years I guess the ones who want reform in charge, who believe in Trump and lap up anything Elon says

SnapdragonToadflax · 24/11/2024 11:40

I mean, I could have started a petition at any point in the last 14 years and got lots of bots people to sign it, because the last government was absolutely fucking shite.

But I didn't, because I understand how democracy works in this country. We are not going to have a general election until this government has served its term. Thank goodness.

TheShellBeach · 24/11/2024 11:18

Conservative Central Office are really desperate.

I actually don't think it's the Tories this time. I strongly suspect it's the money behind Reform trying to destabilise the UK... and for that you need to look towards Russia.

tsmainsqueeze · 24/11/2024 11:41

lonelyweather · 24/11/2024 10:41

lol! What makes you think that?

I signed it , i didn't vote labour and hell would freeze over before i vote tory.
I don't think for one minute that there will be a general election but i want to add my name to this petition for labour to know how a large amount of the general public are feeling at the moment.
I genuinely feel that they have misled us and even though i did not vote for them, i have previously and i did have some hope that they could not be worse than the last lot 🙄

cakeorwine · 24/11/2024 11:41

I wonder when the OP will be back, having listened to some alternate views.

HelpMeGetThrough · 24/11/2024 11:43

Spunk monkeys 😂😂

Must be the latest House of Commons rock band.

Pleaselettheholidayend · 24/11/2024 11:44

Oh well.

There were many, many, many things the last lot did that I disagreed with but all of us that disagreed had to suck it up until they were voted out.

Same here, see the term out then vote. And 200,000 is really a drop in the ocean of the entire electorate.

In the spirit of discussion after only a few months why don’t you think that they aren’t going to be any better than the last lot?

Large amount? Not really. In any case, every political party in the UK is going to be loathed by a lot more than half a million people and this isn't surprising information to any of them.

BerylSnow · 24/11/2024 11:46

eggseggseggseggs · 24/11/2024 10:40

Bet Most of the people signing were the ones commenting about how awful the tories were and how labour was going to save the country

Karmas a bitch isn't it

I doubt this is true.

So, who will you vote for if another election is foist upon us?

Same. The Tories don't really have much to gain from this. The polling for them isn't massively better than the GE, and there are still a good chunk of them whose minorities are small enough that they won't want to face the electorate again until the parties fortunes are clearly better.

BurntBroccoli · 24/11/2024 11:56

Yes I saw that. It'll be Reform voters and those who attended the Farmer protest. Possibly Brexit voters too demanding a recount!

ForPearlViper · 24/11/2024 12:22

I'm pretty sure I signed at least a couple of these during they last gasp years of the Conservatives. I'm also pretty sure they racked up a similar rate of support. Arguably at that time it was much more valid to think an election was necessary given the revolving door at the top of the government.

Nothing happened because of those petitions and nothing will now. Whilst some people are feeling the pain of the cost to us of having to put a whole load of neglect and ineptitude right, I think most of the support is coming from those who obey every dog whistle of the manipulative billionaire owned tabloid and right wing press. Plus a few big mouths who fancy themselves as 'men of the people' - I'm quite happy to see a few millionaires squeaking. I think there are also Russian bots in the mix too.

For the most part, I think a lot of people are glad to have the grown ups back in the room even if we have to take our medicine for the last 14 years for a while.

MargaretThursday · 24/11/2024 12:22

It's a ridiculous idea. I cannot think that having another general election in such sort term, barring a major crisis, would be good for anyone at all. And unconvinced I am that so far they're doing much positive for the country, I don't think it is a disproportionate reaction.

2024: party, no of votes, vote share, seats turnout 59.7% (90% of the vote from 2019)
Labour 9,708,716 33.70% 411
Conservative 6,828,925 23.70% 121
Reform UK 4,117,610 14.29% 5
Liberal Democrat 3,519,143 12.22% 72

2019: turnout 67.3%
Conservative 13,636,684 42.34% 317
Labour 12,877,918 39.99% 262
Liberal Democrat 2,371,861 7.37% 12

So in real terms the number of people who thought it was worth going down to vote for Labour, even bearing in mind they were expected to win but it wasn't a foregone conclusion, was only 75% or 3/4 of the people who had voted for them. Or to put it another way 25% of the people who had voted for them the previous time either chose not to vote or to vote for another party.

Which shows a dissatisfaction with the Labour party from people who had voted for them before.
The Conservatives approximately halved their vote, however the Reform party, as far as I can tell, took a good majority of their votes from them. If you add them together then their total vote would be approximately 11 million, or 80% of the 2019 vote. So probably pretty similar numbers.

So I don't think it's surprising that there's dissatisfaction generally, because it wasn't so much Labour was voted in as the Tory vote was split so they were voted out. Or the Tories lost, rather than Labour won, which is a negative situation to be in.

I think full political reform needs to happen. And we'll start by getting rid of the current parties. MPs need to vote for what they believe their constituents want. They'll need to spend time with them to find this out, and represent them, or they won't get re-elected.
Dishonesty, or lying in the campaigns should also have real consequences. Not a fine and a slap on the wrist. Because currently they can say what they want, say "oops, sorry, not quite true" but the original version is often the one that is stuck in peoples' heads, so they know it's worth it.

Bring back honesty, integrity and MPs who want to do it to serve the people not promote themselves.
And hopefully if we could do that, then leaders will rise up who can lead in the right way, for the right reasons.

And while I'm dreaming, could we have some nicer weather...

It's like no one has ever had a job before. Labour got in a few months ago. If I'd started a new job then I'd barely know my way around the building, it's still be grappling with IT to make my email work etc. Did people expect them to come in and rescue the economy, lead world peace and create equality in the first few weeks?

And the whole time Laura fucking Kuenssberg is standing by the photo copier shouting "You're shit! You hate pensioners! Bring back Boris! Boris was sexy!" whilst trying to photo copy her arse.

Fucking sick of these bellends moaning that Labour haven't sorted everything out in, what, 10 odd weeks of parliament sitting? No critical thinking going on for most of the general public in this country and not here hasn't been for a long time.

There will be a general election in 2028 or 2029 @DancingFerret, not before. This is always how it was until 2015. It was that last set of fuckwits who had one every 18 months as a power grab amongst themselves. That isn't the norm.

Superhansrantowindsor · 24/11/2024 12:25

That’s just not going to happen. I didn’t vote Labour but we had a free democratic election and they won.

inthetrenches1 · 24/11/2024 12:41

Absurd. This is the type of bonkers thread that gives Mumsnet a bad name. Is this about farmers who are leaving over £3mil combined in their estate upon death? Who will then incur inheritance tax at a lower rate than the rest of society, and pay it in instalments over 10 years? Or is it something else? Can we gain some perspective please?

DyslexicPoster · 24/11/2024 12:41

The vast majority of posts pre election was blaming the tories for everything. Like the tories, was purposely screwing us over by choice. If you believed that let Labour mop it up. There will pain while they tidy up the mess.

Personally I think they are all much the same. All lies and we are in decline so there's no switch to go back to life pre bad times. Because the world is changing, super powers are changing and world economy is changing.

I don't trust any of either party as politicians lie,as surely as bears shit in the woods. Let them do their term. This is how our policies system works.

Want a massive change? Don't vote blue or red and go into the unknown. But That will never happen.

If you want a country where everything works well then we need to pay for it. Like it or not. Offord it or not. That's our system.
