It's a ridiculous idea. I cannot think that having another general election in such sort term, barring a major crisis, would be good for anyone at all. And unconvinced I am that so far they're doing much positive for the country, I don't think it is a disproportionate reaction.
2024: party, no of votes, vote share, seats turnout 59.7% (90% of the vote from 2019)
Labour 9,708,716 33.70% 411
Conservative 6,828,925 23.70% 121
Reform UK 4,117,610 14.29% 5
Liberal Democrat 3,519,143 12.22% 72
2019: turnout 67.3%
Conservative 13,636,684 42.34% 317
Labour 12,877,918 39.99% 262
Liberal Democrat 2,371,861 7.37% 12
So in real terms the number of people who thought it was worth going down to vote for Labour, even bearing in mind they were expected to win but it wasn't a foregone conclusion, was only 75% or 3/4 of the people who had voted for them. Or to put it another way 25% of the people who had voted for them the previous time either chose not to vote or to vote for another party.
Which shows a dissatisfaction with the Labour party from people who had voted for them before.
The Conservatives approximately halved their vote, however the Reform party, as far as I can tell, took a good majority of their votes from them. If you add them together then their total vote would be approximately 11 million, or 80% of the 2019 vote. So probably pretty similar numbers.
So I don't think it's surprising that there's dissatisfaction generally, because it wasn't so much Labour was voted in as the Tory vote was split so they were voted out. Or the Tories lost, rather than Labour won, which is a negative situation to be in.
I think full political reform needs to happen. And we'll start by getting rid of the current parties. MPs need to vote for what they believe their constituents want. They'll need to spend time with them to find this out, and represent them, or they won't get re-elected.
Dishonesty, or lying in the campaigns should also have real consequences. Not a fine and a slap on the wrist. Because currently they can say what they want, say "oops, sorry, not quite true" but the original version is often the one that is stuck in peoples' heads, so they know it's worth it.
Bring back honesty, integrity and MPs who want to do it to serve the people not promote themselves.
And hopefully if we could do that, then leaders will rise up who can lead in the right way, for the right reasons.
And while I'm dreaming, could we have some nicer weather...
