Do you keep your heating on at night?

We were poor growing up and didn't have heating till I was quite old. I suspect that has rubbed off on me a bit and even though I've got a good job and am doing ok, I always turn the heating off at night. My dc never complained. They are now adults themselves and also don't leave the heating on overnight.

Dp, however, thinks we are all total heathens. He claims to be freezing at night, his kids can't believe we turn it off. DD's boyfriend is also horrified by this. They argue that we are unusual in this respect.

Do people leave their heating on all night? Surely it's quite expensive to do so? I can understand if you're in a very cold house and you have a baby who you need to keep warm but barring that, are we the odd ones out here? If you are all leaving your heating on I may contemplate turning ours on at night when we have visitors

We don’t ever switch it off, the thermostats are all set for each room and if the temperature drops below a certain number it clicks in. It doesn’t tend to come on in the bedrooms overnight though, our house is well insulated and I don’t like a warm bedroom but I like the rest of the house hot!!

Nope, the heating is off from 11pm until 7am here.

No. It goes off about 8pm, and then there's enough residual warmth to see us through until bedtime.
We all have electric blankets in our beds though! LOVE them.

No, can’t sleep in a stuffy house, nor afford double the heating bill when under duvets anyway.

No, we wouldn’t ever dream of keeping heating on at night.

Always off at night. DH and I are both hot sleepers and would melt with it on. We often turn the radiator in our bedroom right down all day.

DP insists we use the thermostat so that it comes on when the temperature drops below 19c and that means 24 hours, even in the bathrooms. I remain to be convinced that this is cost effective. 😬

It's not off off. But it's set to something like 14 degrees overnight, so it doesn't actually come on.

Ours comes on if it drops below 14c. It did last night.

I have never heard of anyone having heating on overnight. Cannot see the point.

No it's not on at night. We're in our warm beds! I'm quite profligate generally but bloody hell, even I'm not heating a house for sleeping people

Ours is off overnight. We live in a very cold draughty house so it does get very chilly but we have warm duvets

I set mine to come on and off during the night, I absolutely hate being cold, I hate the thoughts of my kids being cold. I grew up with 9 million blankets on my bed and hot water bottles hated it, absolutely hated it! It gets so cold here at 4am and 5am so I have it on a bit longer during that time. I also hate coming down to a cold house I like it toasty.

No absolutely not, but we do have an electric blanket. It generally goes on upstairs at 5 at the moment and goes off when we get our son down at around 7-7.30pm.

Just use thicker duvets!

Mine comes on for 20 minutes, every two hours. Lovely stuff

The thermostat's set to something like 12° at night, so it never clicks on. I like a warm bed in a cool room so wouldn't want the heating on when I'm sleeping.

Heating is off overnight, always. I'm never cold at night, and like to have bedroom windows open a crack all year round. I prefer to be on the cooler side, and layer up, than have it warm enough for t-shirts in the winter.

I find over-heated homes to be stuffy.

Ours is on for a couple of hours in the morning, an hour at lunch time then a few hours in the evening. We do wear layers, snuggle under blankets and sometimes I have a hot water bottle during the day! I’d quite like the heating on more during the day as we both WFH, but I’d rather keep our heating costs down. I’d never have it on at night! We have the bedroom window open at night unless it’s below freezing outside.

It's been minus 5 here at night so yes, the heating has been on overnight - set to 16.

Yes, I am disabled though, and being in a very cold room does me no favours. I have a small oil heater set to 19 degrees, and that works well for me.
