Do you keep your heating on at night?

We were poor growing up and didn't have heating till I was quite old. I suspect that has rubbed off on me a bit Blush and even though I've got a good job and am doing ok, I always turn the heating off at night. My dc never complained. They are now adults themselves and also don't leave the heating on overnight.

Dp, however, thinks we are all total heathens. He claims to be freezing at night, his kids can't believe we turn it off. DD's boyfriend is also horrified by this. They argue that we are unusual in this respect.

Do people leave their heating on all night? Surely it's quite expensive to do so? I can understand if you're in a very cold house and you have a baby who you need to keep warm but barring that, are we the odd ones out here? If you are all leaving your heating on I may contemplate turning ours on at night when we have visitors Grin

Don’t blame you. We plan to open up the old chimneys and get some log burners installed and they will be lit the second it gets cold next year 😅

Love sitting around a campfire too

Sounds lovely. We have one open fire, but you'd be warmer lighting a match! Looks nice, though.

Bigredcombine · 22/11/2024 19:14

Yes we do! We have a air source heat pump so it's lovely and warm all the time. I love it.

I walk around in shorts and vest tops, our house, our rules, our money. We have a very large very old property that needs a lot of heating. Everyone is different and how people choose to heat their homes is absolutely nothing to do with anyone else. Having grown up in a draughty old farmhouse with ice on the inside of windows and cold flagstone floors because my parents were too miserly to heat it, I’ll continue to live the way I do rather then feel cold. It’s a very shortsighted view that others choose to heat their homes at night tbh.

I put my thermostat on 17 at night , it only comes on for short periods when it is freezing or below but it stops the house getting too cold for us and warms up quicker.

Definitely no heating overnight. If I'm cold I get a blanket or heavier duvet.
I also have the window open slightly unless it's below zero.

Chipsahoy · 22/11/2024 20:31

Off at night. Can’t stand noises at night, pipes etc. and hate hot houses.

My boyfriend absolutely will not allow electric blankets for safety reasons! I know the hot water bottle risks, I've had a few failures in my childhood, but it seems he thinks that's a lot more tolerable than a house fire. To be fair, he only partially fills his and uses 70 degree water. I overfill mine and use boiling water because life is too short for such worries. But yeah, you can judge our attitudes to risk in life right there... i would be all over the electric blanket if I could.

Please don't overfill your bottle or use boiling water, you can get seriously burnt if it bursts. There was a woman on This Morning a few months ago who got serious burns.

My husband used to be very concerned about electric blankets but the fires are caused by people not using them properly or damaging them. Now he wouldn't be without his electric blanket.

If you get a decent quality one (we have had Dreamland blankets for over a decade) you will be fine. Millions of people use them.

We look forward to going to bed in winter because the bed is so toasty.

Do you drive a car, travel by air, use any sort of fuel to heat your home, eat, use any electronics, wear clothes? Yes? I thought so. My house, my rules, my money just like everyone else on the planet. Now off you pop and quote everyone else on the thread that heats their homes ☺️

I have never known anyone who has their heating on at night - that is a wierd thing to do.

Bedrooms should be cooler to get a good night's sleep.

You could both have your heating on at night but also choose to have it at a lower temperature though. Our heating never goes off but us 20/21 downstairs snd about 18 upstairs.

SundayDread · 22/11/2024 20:57

Mine is at 16 overnight, it has come on a few nights for a bit. It has helped me sleep better. If it gets very cold at around 5am I find it hard to stay asleep these days.

PandoraSox · 22/11/2024 21:14

Electric blankets cause about 43 fires a year and so aren't anywhere near as dangerous as the other household appliances listed here.

workstealssleep · 22/11/2024 21:19

I hate being hot at night. Heating off and windows open, no matter the temperature.

Liv999 · 22/11/2024 21:37

Good God no, who can afford to have the heating running all night, and why would you need it anyway if you're in a warm bed

ilovemincepies24 · 22/11/2024 21:38

Unless you have a young baby or an unwell person in the house, I don't understand why you would need it on at night while you are sleeping under a duvet. For most people a duvet is enough, but if not you can always have extra blankets, thick PJs, hot water bottle and fleecy bedding. I am cold most of the time over winter, but even I am fine tucked up under the covers.

Titsywoo · 22/11/2024 21:42

Never have heating on at night. Your body temp is supposed to drop so you can sleep properly. I have a decent duvet anyway. Thermostat drops to 13 from 10 till 6. DS gets really hot and sleeps with the window open even in the coldest depths of winter.

Because I prefer it to being piled under covers and STILL having a cold face, especially my nose. Nobody has to understand the choices of other people.

Oh I bet you have known at least one someone......I mean unless you are the bedroom inspector how would you know? Personally I think its weird (e before i) to have views on the temperature of other people's bedrooms

We drop it to 16.5

Bloody hell I thought I was tough but 16.5c is hard core😀

Exactly. How hot do people keep their houses? You just turn down the bedroom radiators to keep the room on the cool rather than cold side.

bridesmaid1024 · 22/11/2024 22:48

No, and I'm always cold haha ..... I switch mine off when I go to bed - I can't stand waking up to a hot house; I always get a headache if I've left it on overnight

ViciousCurrentBun · 23/11/2024 01:52

We have it on a frost setting at night, best to do this as if a real cold snap and your pipes freeze it’s a massive problem.

ascothelp · 23/11/2024 09:00

Ours is set to 16 at night- previously we didn’t have it on at all overnight but we have a friend staying with her baby over Xmas so I wanted to check we could have it on a bit at night in advance of that. I am now addicted to the house being toasty all night that I can’t see how I can go back!
