Do you keep your heating on at night?

We were poor growing up and didn't have heating till I was quite old. I suspect that has rubbed off on me a bit Blush and even though I've got a good job and am doing ok, I always turn the heating off at night. My dc never complained. They are now adults themselves and also don't leave the heating on overnight.

Dp, however, thinks we are all total heathens. He claims to be freezing at night, his kids can't believe we turn it off. DD's boyfriend is also horrified by this. They argue that we are unusual in this respect.

Do people leave their heating on all night? Surely it's quite expensive to do so? I can understand if you're in a very cold house and you have a baby who you need to keep warm but barring that, are we the odd ones out here? If you are all leaving your heating on I may contemplate turning ours on at night when we have visitors Grin

No, we have it on for an hour in the evening and then it comes on for an hour when we wake up and that’s fine. Our pyjamas and duvets keep us warm and snug overnight so it’s no problem.

Epidote · 22/11/2024 15:53

No, we don't. We have it automatic and it will turn on at 6 AM to warm the house before we wake up at 6.30.

Coconutter24 · 22/11/2024 15:40

It’s not cost effective to leave it on, set it at a temp and let it turn it’s self on and off. We gave it a try because someone told it it’s cheaper but it wasn’t for us. It cost us more to do that than it did to just turn it on and off when needed

Thanks. I'll wait to to get the next month's bill to convince DP. Unfortunately he's often awake and up for much of the night so I get that he needs heating up. It's keeping rads on in rooms not in use that gets me worried about the cost. We're pensioners who no longer receive WFA 😰

Never have my heating on at night can't see any need to heat the house when I'm tucked up in a warm bed. I'd hate a stuffy heated house while I sleep.

I'm a very chilly person and during the day/evening I will have the thermostat set around 23.5, or higher, if it's very cold and I'm always wrapped up with a thermal vest and a couple of jumpers.

At night I have a 13 tog duvet and wear pyjamas, short sleeved unless the weather is extremely cold and I'm always cosy in bed.

LittleBobbyDazzler · 22/11/2024 15:55

Over the very cold weather or has been because DDs room has been dropping to 14° I wish we could afford a better heating system, were just on / off and one thermostat, it's crap. These fancy night settings or room thermostats sound amazing. One day when we can afford it that's a dream.

Katiesaidthat · 22/11/2024 15:55

I have the thermostat at 16 at night, it doesn´t usually come on at all. They I have it programmed to come on at 6 am, when I get up, to a maximum of 20. Works fine.

Stretchedresources · 22/11/2024 15:56

Yes. Hearing is set to 20° 24/7. I've tried turning it down and off but it wakes me up cold. I'm in fleecy pyjamas and a winter duvet but I don't generate heat when I'm not moving.

BackinBlack24 · 22/11/2024 15:56

Well I'm in a new house with air to water so if it dips below what the thermostat is set to it comes on but when I was growing up we didn't have central heating till I was maybe 11 or 12 we didn't put it on at night no real need as perfectly cozy in bed but would set it for an hour before time to get up so the house was warm

DrZaraCarmichael · 22/11/2024 15:57

Ours is set to come on if the temp drops under 13c at night and it never does. So no, we don't have heating on overnight. Our loft bedroom is so well insulated that we usually have the window open overnight too.

Nellieinthebarn · 22/11/2024 15:57

I have it set to come on if the temperature drops below 14 between 10:30 PM and 6:30 AM, after that its supposed to be 18, but there is a period in the afternoon when it doesn't come on at all. I think I have set it wrong somehow. DH and I both have heart conditions, so cannot really cope with getting too cold. I am keeping a close eye on my electric balance though. I have paid extra throughout the year to build up a bit of credit to use this winter. Just as well I did, because we lost DHs Winter fuel payment, which was unexpected.

TwistedSisters · 22/11/2024 15:58

No! I'm really not too concerned about the heating bill, it is what it is, but even I wouldn't have the heating on overnight! Ours goes off around 7pm and comes back on at 6am - the thermostat is set to 19/20 - and even the last few really cold mornings, the lowest it has dropped overnight is 15. Which is fine overnight when everyone has thick duvets and blankets and the kids have fleece pjs.

IOSTT · 22/11/2024 15:58

Yes, only on the colder nights (it’s on thermostat)

Fluufer · 22/11/2024 16:00

Ours is set to 17 at night, it doesn't come on every night. Far more efficient to maintain a decent temperature than let it get cold and have to warm back up in the morning.

Can you not control individual radiators? I don't mean on an app, just manually on the radiator.

DazedAndConfused321 · 22/11/2024 16:01

We have a big cold house and lots of kids, heating is on for 6 months of the year. We have great insulation and an efficient heating system which makes it easier, but it is costly. It comes on at 19 degrees in the winter, but we lower that in spring and summer

Snowxmas · 22/11/2024 16:02

I am amazed that people actually keep their heating on overnight. Trust me, you do not need heating on when you are in bed - you are wasting your money.

summer3219 · 22/11/2024 16:02

We just have it set to a lower temperature overnight. If I switch it off completely it takes ages to get back to a comfortable temperature and is still cold when I leave for work. I end up with a sizeable bill even though I'm still never quite warm enough. It doesn't seem to add that much onto the bill.

Life is too short to not have the heating on at night if you can afford it. Literally nothing wrong with it, some people don't like to be cold at night in winter- hope that's ok with you!

TheCanterburyWails · 22/11/2024 16:04

Goes off from 10pm until 7am in our house, partly because if I'm too warm in bed I have nightmares. 😅

NoNotTodayThanks · 22/11/2024 16:04

No, it's always switched off in the evening. The house is quite well insulated so it stays warm until we go to bed.

I couldn't sleep with the heating on, I get really hot when I'm sleeping 😄

AlteredStater · 22/11/2024 16:05

Yes, but our thermostat is set to a lower level, 17C.

My point is that you will not be cold. You will be in bed - under a duvet - it’s warm under there. Honestly.

Bagpuss2022 · 22/11/2024 16:06

We don’t have our heating on much at all and never at night DH sulks if I put it on in the day we have a fire in the lounge and each bedroom has electric heaters DH never used to be like this when we were younger had much less money we had it on all day in winter,
I blame the bloody smart meter now he sees how much it uses he’s turned into Scrooge it’s the one thing we actually argue about I don’t mind sitting with my electric blanket if its just the two of us but if DC home I put it on till about 11. He obsesses over it 😠

IBlameTheDog · 22/11/2024 16:07

No. Too noisy!!

mydogisthebest · 22/11/2024 16:07

No, our thermostat is set to 15 overnight and it never gets cold enough for it to come on.

Heating comes on 6.30am and goes off 9.30am then on again at 4.30 till 10.30.

Unless it is very cold our bedroom radiator is always off. We have a 4.5 tog duvet all year round, both sleep naked and are plenty warm enough
