Do you keep your heating on at night?

We were poor growing up and didn't have heating till I was quite old. I suspect that has rubbed off on me a bit Blush and even though I've got a good job and am doing ok, I always turn the heating off at night. My dc never complained. They are now adults themselves and also don't leave the heating on overnight.

Dp, however, thinks we are all total heathens. He claims to be freezing at night, his kids can't believe we turn it off. DD's boyfriend is also horrified by this. They argue that we are unusual in this respect.

Do people leave their heating on all night? Surely it's quite expensive to do so? I can understand if you're in a very cold house and you have a baby who you need to keep warm but barring that, are we the odd ones out here? If you are all leaving your heating on I may contemplate turning ours on at night when we have visitors Grin

No, off all night. Can’t stand over-warm houses.

Togetheragain45 · 22/11/2024 15:20

Usually we turn it off at night but in this freezing weather, it's set to 15°. It's too cold right now to turn it off completely.

This is making me feel a lot less like the wicked witch of the west Grin

Electric blankets are a good idea for those that get cold - I might buy Dp one for Xmas BiscuitGrin

No it would be mental to have heating on at night - you might as well burn money. We have thick duvets and hot water bottles, heating goes off at 9pm and comes back on at 6am.

YearningForAWinteryWinter · 22/11/2024 15:21

The couple of times I've left the heating on overnight by mistake, I had a headache in the morning so I never leave it on.
It's on a thermostat and I turn it down to 10 so it's pretty much off.
I think people sleep better in cooler rooms.

DysonSphere · 22/11/2024 15:22

No.

Never have.

Electric blankets are a preferred option when it's really freezing. Otherwise it's hot water bottles after heating goes off.

MerryMarys · 22/11/2024 15:22

Surley it depends what the temperature drops to if it isn't on.

This. We have our heating system always on and set to 19 degrees and so yes in the last three nights it's come on.

Topseyt123 · 22/11/2024 15:22

Ours is on between 4.30pm and 11.30pm, set to 18.5⁰. it is then off until 6.30am. It is on between 6.30am ay10.00am, again set to 18.5⁰.

Surely it's just not really needed in the very middle of the night/small hours unless temperatures outside are exceptionally low with a danger of frozen pipes? When that happens I do switch ours to manual (constant) so that it stays on. I switch back to the timer mode as soon as possible though, once that particular cold snap has ended.

When it is in its off periods it goes automatically into frost protection mode, which means that should the temperature in the house drop below 8⁰ it would come on. It has never dropped that low.

We are well in credit on our electric and gas bills, and I can see from the smart meter monitor that we are not using excessive amounts.

Mylifeisamesssuchamess · 22/11/2024 15:14

God no. It's barely on in the daytime let alone overnight. It's set to come on if it drops below 9 degrees to avoid frozen pipes.

Same! We barely have heating on during the day let alone at night. During the day our heating is set to 15 for an hour in the morning and a couple of hours in the evening. Would hate a hot house overnight.

SparrowFeet · 22/11/2024 15:23

God no. Well.. sort of, we drop it so it comes on at 10 degrees if it's going to be below freezing out so the kitchen pipe doesn't freeze... not that that ever works. But otherwise no.
We have double glazing so whilst it's cold when we wake up it's not freezing and I'm happy being snuggled in. I have the windows open too and I can't sleep without it.

I'm the ice witch of the north and I don't care.

latetonews · 22/11/2024 15:24

We keep it on at night so that the lounge is warm when we wake up for work at 5am.

If we couldn’t afford to do this we would not leave it on but we can so we do.

AdoraBell · 22/11/2024 15:24

Usually not as DH can’t sleep if the temperature over 16 degrees. We only have heating overnight when it’s freezing.

Uricon2 · 22/11/2024 15:24

I honestly think the fans we have had to have on 24/7 for the last couple of summers use more fuel than gas central heating. Might change my mind come spring of course.

LargeJugs · 22/11/2024 15:24

Thermostat set to 16C overnight. Usually it doesn't come on.

caringcarer · 22/11/2024 15:25

No, because both DH and me are asthmatic and it does put the air we breathe in and it irritates the airways. It goes off at 10pm and goes back on 7am.

reluctantbrit · 22/11/2024 15:27

Our heating goes down to 10 degrees from 10pm to 5am as it otherwise takes too long to heat in the morning.

The only time we had the heating on more was when DD was a baby.

Isobel201 · 22/11/2024 15:28

No I don't, even during this week's cold snap I still like the window open a little. I get really warm in bed.

ByMerryKoala · 22/11/2024 15:28

BanjoKnockers · 22/11/2024 15:24

I'm the ice witch of the north and I don't care.

Pretty sure the good witch Glinda of the North, would have kept the heating on otherwise the munchkins would have gone feral.

Chemenger · 22/11/2024 15:29

No, the heating is off overnight and my preference would be to have the window open whatever the temperature but DH and the cat disagree. I can’t sleep in a warm room.

LetThereBeLove · 22/11/2024 15:30

rainbowstardrops · 22/11/2024 15:12

We turn ours down to about 18 when it's cold like it has been this week. It sometimes kicks in overnight which I don't particularly like but I'm the hottie in the house and everyone else says it's quite chilly, so that's fair enough.
I don't know about these days but back when I was younger, my dad (who was a heating engineer) said it's more cost effective to keep a house at a similar temperature, rather than keep turning it right down and then whacking it up again. Might be different these days now though with the extortionate cost of living etc

That's exactly what DP says.

Ginmonkeyagain · 22/11/2024 15:30

No not at all. Cannot stand be hot at night. We even sleep with the bedroom window open!

We do have frost protect turned on but to my knowledge we have neverneeded it - flat in London.

StMarie4me · 22/11/2024 15:31

Drip it to 17. Daughter has many health conditions including severe asthma and cold air makes it worse x

MitochondriaUnited · 22/11/2024 15:31

I’m more concerned that you still have a system that you turn on and off tbh.

We have a thermostat with a timer.
The heating is never off, even in summer (but it doesn’t come on iyswim)
At night, the temperature is set to 14oC. It would come if it went lower than that. It’s extremely unusual when it does.

As an aside DH grew up in a house with no central heating. Still my PIL house and still no central heating. He had ice inside his bedroom window etc…
He is still happy to have the heating ‘on’ at night.

itsmylife7 · 22/11/2024 15:31

No would be far too stuffy to sleep.

The only time I had it on overnight was the beast from the east.

That's because it was about 8c in the house.
