Do you keep your heating on at night?

We were poor growing up and didn't have heating till I was quite old. I suspect that has rubbed off on me a bit Blush and even though I've got a good job and am doing ok, I always turn the heating off at night. My dc never complained. They are now adults themselves and also don't leave the heating on overnight.

Dp, however, thinks we are all total heathens. He claims to be freezing at night, his kids can't believe we turn it off. DD's boyfriend is also horrified by this. They argue that we are unusual in this respect.

Do people leave their heating on all night? Surely it's quite expensive to do so? I can understand if you're in a very cold house and you have a baby who you need to keep warm but barring that, are we the odd ones out here? If you are all leaving your heating on I may contemplate turning ours on at night when we have visitors Grin

Nope don't have it on overnight - grew up in a house that never had it on overnight either.

I’m more concerned that you still have a system that you turn on and off tbh.

We have a thermostat with a timer.
The heating is never off, even in summer (but it doesn’t come on iyswim)
At night, the temperature is set to 14oC. It would come if it went lower than that. It’s extremely unusual when it does.

As an aside DH grew up in a house with no central heating. Still my PIL house and still no central heating. He had ice inside his bedroom window etc…
He is still happy to have the heating ‘on’ at night.

I have a panel with a up and down arrow to set temp higher or lower. It displays current temperature if I want the heating to go off I just reduce the required temperature or vice versa. The boiler fires up or switches off within half a degree. It's easy to turn the temperature down before bed or boost when you feel chilly

ExpertlyDecorated · 22/11/2024 15:43

No, our programmable thermostat is set at 13° overnight so it virtually never comes on. It is set to 19° in the morning and evening, 16° most of the day and 13° overnight.

Imfreetofeelgood · 22/11/2024 15:43

It's turned down to 18 when we go to bed. There's only been 1 night this winter so far, where it has kicked in over night. I think we have a warm house. As a child it was freezing on a morning, the coke fire was allowed to go out at night. Dad got up early to clear the grate and reset it. I can't bear to be too hot getting ready etc, so get cross when DP gets up and turns the thermostat straight up to 23. Later in the day he often has it on 25 if I'm out. A wall of heat hits me on my return 😐

Horatiostrumpet · 22/11/2024 15:43

Yeah ours just clicks off and on, think it's set to 18 degrees. DD has the chilliest room in the house and she wakes when it's too cold.

I grew up poor, getting changed under the covers in winter and wearing a hat to bed. If there's one thing I'm going to spoil the kids with, it's the heating.

DragonflyFairy · 22/11/2024 15:44

No never had it on overnight. I find it quite cloying if I stay in a house that does.

We do live in a super warm new build though so only need a couple of hours heating a day even when it's freezing outside.

Ponderingwindow · 22/11/2024 15:44

We don’t bother with turning it on and off. We set temperature ranges on timers and let the house take care of itself. It doesn’t run very often during the night unless it is very cold outside, but it will kick on occasionally.

Our thermostat will tell me how long it will take to get up to the target temperature. some nights if we left it off all night, it would take most of the day. That isn’t cost efficient either.

Serenity45 · 22/11/2024 15:44

Both DH and I run 'warm' sweaty at night, so our heating goes off at about 4pm (both WFH so is on during the day when needed) We like the log burner on to make lounge cosy for the evenings. Quite like it being much cooler upstairs so can snuggle under the winter duvet. Plus I just don't like feeling too hot.

We stayed with PILs a few years ago for 2 months over winter (very grateful as saved us renting during some renovations). Bloody hell it was warm - we both really struggled as the heating was on 24/7, though thankfully we worked in offices at the time so not home much. But even with the radiator in guest room switched off we still had to crack the window a tiny bit overnight to be comfortable.

Alstation · 22/11/2024 15:45

Heating controllers are so much more sophisticated these days.

We used to switch ours off. Now it's on with a temp of about 14 overnight. It hardly costs anything overnight because it barely, if ever, comes on. So yes and no really.

I think it actually saves us money overall. We used to boost the heating near bedtime for an hour on the coldest nights so it wouldn't go below 12 in the kids' rooms early morning. Now we don't need to pump the heat in the night before, we can just let it click on when it's needed which is much more efficient.

18 is daytime cosy for me..

WTAFisthisnonsense · 22/11/2024 15:46

Heating off all night. Our bedroom windows are open every night, whatever the weather, so it would be crazy to have the heating on.

Ponderingwindow · 22/11/2024 15:46

I can’t stand a hot house, especially at night, and dd unfortunately has the coldest room by far, so we do use a space heater for her room at night. Even that has a temperature sensor to turn itself on and off. It’s 2024, technology is our friend. I’m not sure it still will be in the future :), but for now it is quite handy.

Howinthehelldidthishappen · 22/11/2024 15:47

Absolutely not on overnight. I'm still under a summer tog duvet with the window wide open all night. Can't stand being hot overnight.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 22/11/2024 15:47

snarkygal · 22/11/2024 15:33

We have hot water bottles, and the heat turned off at night, but also live in a mid terrace house with neighbours who pump the heat out non-stop, so our house never feels that cold.
My sister has a massive single glazed victorian mansion style house where you can see your breath all year round. I couldn't live like that, even though the space is lovely.

Please be careful with hwbs, they have a sell by date.

An electric blanket is so much safer and so much more convenient. You just swtich it on 5 or 10 minutes before you get in to bed and can have it on when you are in bed if you want, but I don't as I feel too hot.

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/11/2024 15:48

I've never had heating on at night. I get hot enough anyway.

CherryVanillaPie · 22/11/2024 15:48

We have it set very low from 11-7, so it doesn't come on. The house retains heat overnight though, so it doesn't get too cold. We're under warm duvets anyway. When my dds were babies though we had it on at night as I worried they'd get cold. It was lower than daytime temp though

allmybooksarefromthelibrary · 22/11/2024 15:49

Never - I sleep brilliantly in winter in a cold bedroom! It's one of the reasons I'm really averse to a heating system that stays on in som degree all the time!

Lovelysummerdays · 22/11/2024 15:49

I think you sleep better when it’s cold but you are warm tbh. Electric under blankets is a handy thing.

mimbleandlittlemy · 22/11/2024 15:49

No. Goes off at 9pm, back on at 7am and I'm one of those people who sleeps with a window open, even if it's snowing.

Heating would come on if house temperature dropped below 14 degrees though.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 22/11/2024 15:50

our heating isn’t on yet (except the floor heating in the bathrooms and loo).

But I definitely wouldn’t turn the heating off at night. Why would I do that?

user8634216758 · 22/11/2024 15:51

Off at 11pm comes on at 6am. Can’t bear sleeping in a stuffy room, have the window ajar on all but the coldest nights.

BlueEyedLeucy · 22/11/2024 15:51

Ours is set to 16 overnight. I find it’s more economic to keep it somewhat warm than to try to warm it up from cold in the morning, so we 16 overnight and 18 during the day. Can’t let it drop too low cause we have tarantulas who do not need independent heat sources but need it to not be too cold.

JT69 · 22/11/2024 15:52

Always turn ours off unless it’s a run of very cold nights. Our out pipe froze one year and would have been avoided if we d left it all cracked on .

GroovyChick87 · 22/11/2024 15:52

I have it off and turn the thermostat down so it doesn't come on overnight. On the few times I've forgotten to do this I've woken up sweltering. I normally sleep with the window open and an electric blanket and the kids all have thick bedding. So we are all warm enough.

WilmerFlintstone · 22/11/2024 15:53

No, can't afford it.
