Do you keep your heating on at night?

We were poor growing up and didn't have heating till I was quite old. I suspect that has rubbed off on me a bit Blush and even though I've got a good job and am doing ok, I always turn the heating off at night. My dc never complained. They are now adults themselves and also don't leave the heating on overnight.

Dp, however, thinks we are all total heathens. He claims to be freezing at night, his kids can't believe we turn it off. DD's boyfriend is also horrified by this. They argue that we are unusual in this respect.

Do people leave their heating on all night? Surely it's quite expensive to do so? I can understand if you're in a very cold house and you have a baby who you need to keep warm but barring that, are we the odd ones out here? If you are all leaving your heating on I may contemplate turning ours on at night when we have visitors Grin

We drop to 14 and get compressed with cats

MiddleAgedDread · 22/11/2024 15:07

My thermostat is set to 14 degrees overnight. This week it's kicked in a couple of times overnight buit doesn't often drop this low.

Moonlightstars · 22/11/2024 15:09

We have our thermostat set at 3 degrees so if it drops below that at night it will come on. Almost never happened though.
We have currently the heating on for about an hour in the morning and then at 18.5 between 3.30pm and 9.30pm.

Uricon2 · 22/11/2024 15:11

No choice here, DH bedbound and downstairs, he wouldn't be able to use the moveable thermostat to turn it up. I do take it down a tiny bit at night so he doesn't get too hot and do layered fluffy blankets so he's warm but has a bit of control. It's all a bit of a worry when it is so cold as at present.

I like an unheated bedroom though with a 5792756 tog duvet Grin

rainbowstardrops · 22/11/2024 15:12

We turn ours down to about 18 when it's cold like it has been this week. It sometimes kicks in overnight which I don't particularly like but I'm the hottie in the house and everyone else says it's quite chilly, so that's fair enough.
I don't know about these days but back when I was younger, my dad (who was a heating engineer) said it's more cost effective to keep a house at a similar temperature, rather than keep turning it right down and then whacking it up again. Might be different these days now though with the extortionate cost of living etc

BitOutOfPractice · 22/11/2024 15:12

We have the windows open and heating off all year round.

i hate it stuffy at night.

I do live in a well insulated flat though. It’s rarely cool enough for the heating to come on with the thermostat

Singleandproud · 22/11/2024 15:13

I turn mine off and I open my window. I only sleep with it closed if there's actual snow on the floor.

cindertoffeeapple · 22/11/2024 15:13

No, I would suffocate. But we have a well insulated house and no kids, and don’t have it on much anyway.

ByMerryKoala · 22/11/2024 15:13

Kind of, the thermostat is set to 17c but even though it was Baltic here yesterday it didn't get low enough for the heating to kick on.

helpfulperson · 22/11/2024 15:14

Surley it depends what the temperature drops to if it isn't on. I have mine set to 16 degrees and the last three nights it's come on a few times.

Frost setting switches it on a 7 degrees but if u let it drop that far it tales ages to heat up.

Redcrayons · 22/11/2024 15:14

No. The house gets too dry and stuffy if the heating is on all day.

I don’t have the radiator turned on in my bedroom most of the year, in fact I only shut the window overnight about a week ago.

I sleep better in a cold room under a pile of blankets.

Mylifeisamesssuchamess · 22/11/2024 15:14

God no. It's barely on in the daytime let alone overnight. It's set to come on if it drops below 9 degrees to avoid frozen pipes.

Jennywren2000 · 22/11/2024 15:15

Ours is off at night and kicks back in around 6am

Iceymaidens · 22/11/2024 15:15

Heating on 6am to 10pm - I too hate an over warm bedroom but do end up sometimes with a beanie hat on as hate a cold head 😂

HansHolbein · 22/11/2024 15:16

We left it on last night and woke up with raging headaches this morning. That won’t be happening again!

Doggymummar · 22/11/2024 15:16

Ours is on till ten then back on at 7 am

Devilsmommy · 22/11/2024 15:16

Mines on 6-6 but only because my 2 year old doesn't believe in blankets or onesies😂 probably wouldn't have it on all night otherwise

Sparxdislike · 22/11/2024 15:17

I have it set to 10 just so the pipes don't freeze. Just what my Dad always said to do 😅😬 doesn't normally click on but has this week. Brrrr

IAmNeverThePerson · 22/11/2024 15:17

Goes off at 9:30 here back on at 5:30 (we get up at 6)

purpleme12 · 22/11/2024 15:17

Nooooo
I actually like the house to be really cold at night
I am never cold in bed (and when we've woken up past few days it's been 10/11 degrees) I can snuggle up and I get to sleep way better.

I was in someone else's house recently and it was 18 degrees at night and couldn't snuggle up under the covers, cover was far too hot for that and it took me way longer to get to sleep

ScottBakula · 22/11/2024 15:18

Mine is on low overnight but I have only just started doing this in the past few months.
My house is cold and takes ages to warm up so I'd rather keep the chill off overnight.
I wish there was a day and a night thermostat so they could be set individually.

isthesolution · 22/11/2024 15:18

No never.

TubularBeIIs · 22/11/2024 15:18

No matter how cold the temp I've never had heating on overnight. We do have a well insulated house and the heating goes off at 8.30pm. Not usually in bed till nearly midnight.

Always sleep with bedroom window open. Good quality down duvet though. I hate feeling cold.

IAmNeverThePerson · 22/11/2024 15:19

Do people have it on all day? We have it on a couple of hours first thing, then a couple of hours at lunch then back on early evening.

devildeepbluesea · 22/11/2024 15:19

No heating at night, and only have it on for an hour or so each day. I don’t like a stuffy house, but if I’m cold it goes on. At night, I’m in a nice warm bed with the window open. Nothing better than a cold room and a warm bed.
