Today, I was looking for an espresso cup and discovered that they are currently as rare as hens teeth.
While going into one of several charity shops in my town, I was shocked to see a coffee set in a dining set that I had.
This set was from the 60's and was only used for important occasions. I inherited it when my dad died and it sat in a cupboard gathering dust. My dad has been gone since 2005.
I was totally shocked, to the point where I apologised to the shop lady and explained the reason why I was.
15 minutes later, she had my entire collection and I now have an empty cupboard.
Had I not seen this, that set would have sat in a cupboard until I died.

Was it Eternal Bow? 😂

Eternal Beau was more 80s/90s.

So many arseholes on this thread. if you can’t say something nice, ….

mjf981 · 13/11/2024 00:01

I get it now.

But I must say, in general I find the quality of writing (in general) is going downhill. The level of missing detail in some posts is significant. You shouldn't have to be inside someones head to work out what they have written and what their point is.

Although I got the gist the confusion was starting to give me a smirk - shades of sharon(?) and the wasp, or cutted up pears.

Good for you taking yours to the shop and clearing a bit of space & good luck on your search for espresso cups

ps if anyone fancies starting a slightly mad live parking thread for old times sake I’m in 🙋🏻‍♀️

HRTQueen · 13/11/2024 00:02

I was confused at first got it after the second read (it’s late too)

You don’t think they will turn up on Antique’s Roadshow anytime soon 😬

My nanny picked up a horrible Asprey service platter in a second hand shop we used it to play with it when playing kings and queens. God knows why she bought it turned out to be worth a few hundred pounds and was put away only to be taken out to show off the great buy she had found

And what happened to the wasp? 😁

😂 xpost

TheBeesKnee · 13/11/2024 00:04

Can we see!?

Agapornis · 13/11/2024 00:06

Please upload a photo and tell us where the shop is 😅 am on the lookout for some mid century cake plates.

Though why not just use the set? I no longer keep anything 'for best' and it brings me much joy.

Caswallonthefox · 12/11/2024 23:55

I went into the charity shop to see if they had any espresso cups originally.
They had a coffee pot plus cups in the same set that I had.
Which consists of tea cups and saucers, small, medium and large plates, small and normal sized dishes. One oval plate, one gravy jug plus plate, one cream jug and one oval plate.
I decided that they would be better added to what they had rather than sitting in my cupboard gathering dust.

I hope someone buys and loves the entire set, perhaps someone who has been trying to collect it piece by piece because 'it's the wedding set my parents/grandparents had that all got smashed in a house move' or similar.
And I hope you find your espresso cup.

Bonbon21 · 13/11/2024 00:06

I understood your first post on first reading. Thank you.
I am glad you now have an empty cupboard.
Good Luck finding espresso cups to fill the space.

VegTrug · 13/11/2024 00:06

Ok so you donated to a charity shop? Am I missing something

BobbyBiscuits · 13/11/2024 00:07

You were happy because the set in the shop matched the one you had, so you donated your stuff to make the set in the shop complete?
If so that's cool, and I really nice coincidence. I hope someone enjoys it.

gotmyknickersinatwist · 13/11/2024 00:14

@Caswallonthefox of the donated stuff or the espresso cup?

Caswallonthefox · 12/11/2024 23:32

Sweet baby Jebus all I wanted, was to share something because I had no one else to talk to.
I didn't realise this was a creative writing essay.
I was looking for espresso cups.
The charity shop had some crockery that was the same as a set that I had inherited.
I was amazed that it was there, cuz I'd never seen it anywhere else.
I apologised because I was amazed that it was there and I was standing in the shop gobsmacked.
I went home and removed the set I had, from my kitchen cupboard and put it into a shopping trolley and trundled to the charity shop and removed the items, TO ADD TO THE SET THEY ALREADY HAD. Because I would never use it, as I am on my own and ain't nobody gonna invade my safe space.

I think people got confused because often it's the other way around - if you have a crockery set and then see more of the matching set in a charity shop, you buy it to add to your existing collection.

I am also a bit confused by the espresso cups, though. ...

Tbry24 · 13/11/2024 00:16

Someone will love that set how kind of you. I hope you find some espresso cups now for yourself especially as you have an empty cupboard.

RoveSt · 13/11/2024 00:16

I had no trouble reading and understanding this, and it’s absolutely something I would do.

Someone is going to feel so lucky finding that set and will get joy from using it, and I hope you feel lighter for finding a ‘home’ for something that was special but unused.

Caswallonthefox · 13/11/2024 00:18

I find it sad that people think I'm not all there.
All I wanted to do was share something that had happened to me. I have noone else in my life to share random omg moments with.

User28473 · 13/11/2024 00:19

I understood perfectly OP, some posters are accusing you of not making sense and they clearly just don't know the difference between a dining set and a coffee cup set. However, I was totally shocked by the ending 😂. I was totally expecting espresso cups in the coffee set that match the vintage one from your dad's dining set perfectly and it was an amazing coincidence, 'gift from your dad in heaven' type thing, particularly after saying what year he died. I LOL'd when the story was actually a decluttering success 😂😂.

Ohnobackagain · 13/11/2024 00:21

@Caswallonthefox I got it OP. How nice you made a bigger set!

Todaywasbetter · 13/11/2024 00:21

Well, I think you are very kind to donate your coffee set. It’s really hard to get rid of things I’ve been left. Sometimes it can take ages. I think it means, when you can give them away, that you’re ready

BusyFinch · 13/11/2024 00:22

Christ0nABike · 12/11/2024 23:59

Just the one, but all they had at the charity shop was a giant Sports Direct mug so now she’s off her tits.

Literally made me snort laugh @Christ0nABike

Delphiniumandlupins · 13/11/2024 00:23

I imagined a much more dated looking china. Glad you have found a good home for it. I am wondering why you have a shopping trolley at home though?

Same, and OP, you did a generous thing. Someone will love the set.

Maybe some other MNter will post on here soon going 'OMG you'll never believe what I just found in a charity shop and I need to tell someone!!'
