Today, I was looking for an espresso cup and discovered that they are currently as rare as hens teeth.
While going into one of several charity shops in my town, I was shocked to see a coffee set in a dining set that I had.
This set was from the 60's and was only used for important occasions. I inherited it when my dad died and it sat in a cupboard gathering dust. My dad has been gone since 2005.
I was totally shocked, to the point where I apologised to the shop lady and explained the reason why I was.
15 minutes later, she had my entire collection and I now have an empty cupboard.
Had I not seen this, that set would have sat in a cupboard until I died.

Interesting how this thread is split down the middle of those who thought the OP had written rubbish and those of us who understood.

I'm not sure the OPs writing was the problem 🤣

MaltipooMama · 15/11/2024 10:05

OP I understood your first post and attributed the fact that it was (initially) slightly confusing to the fact that you were so shocked and just had to get it all out! I bet this brought back a lot of memories for you seeing it sitting in a charity shop, and how lovely that you donated the rest of your set to make this one complete. It's a really lovely pattern and design and I'm it will be cherished by whoever snaps it up!

Thank you for understanding.

More understanding than yourself it seems.

What does that even mean?

I get it now.
But I must say, in general I find the quality of writing (in general) is going downhill. The level of missing detail in some posts is significant. You shouldn't have to be inside someones head to work out what they have written and what their point is.

Stop.

I was awarded international first prize for my English language, RSA stage III paper (the technical college I attended did not teach A level courses) in 1983. My written English and my comprehension is extremely good. I had no difficulty whatsoever in understanding OP’s initial post.

(Incidentally, sentences should not begin with but, your second use of in general was superfluous, “someones” to denote possession requires the use of an apostrophe and “one ought not” rather than “you should not” is received standard English.)

Amaranthasweetandfair · 17/11/2024 16:44

It's actually fine to start a sentence with but.

MusicMakesItAllBetter · 17/11/2024 16:47

This.
@Caswallonthefox thanks for sharing your story and sorry about the others who couldn’t revel in your joy with you. Great that you could finally let the set go and get space. I love to hear about people’s happy moments so feel free to share any with me 🙂

How long were you standing in the shop gobsmacked and how much of a gobsmacked expression were you pulling to feel you had to apologise and explain? Do people really do that? Stand in a gobsmacked pose?

Would it make you feel better if I said I was amazed? I wasn't timing myself. I was apologising for standing in the middle of the shop.

Where did you get a shopping trolley from?

A shoe shop that is opposite my flat.

Bonkers ~ can't make head nor tail of all that ......and what happened to the espresso cups that are apparently rare 🤔🤔🤔

An espresso cup, for measuring my porridge oats, was what I was originally looking for, in several of the many charity shops in my town.
I saw a coffee set that was the same as the dinner service gathering dust in my cupboard at home. That charity shop ended up with my unused dinner service. I was still not able to find an espresso cup. Hence them being rare, in charity shops.

The next day, however, I went to 2 shops I forgot about and found a single cup that was the perfect size.
I hope I've explained it in better words for you.

I really need to know what happened in Tuscany that led to you banning all future visitors from your home? I’m imagining a sequel to In Bruges

The name of the dinner service was Tuscany.

I don't do people in my house, therefore a dinner service is no use to me.

Here's a novel idea for you. I don't care what you think because you appear to be the type of person who moans, just to moan.

All good stories have a beginning, middle and end. This had neither. This was a Christopher Nolan-esqe non linear narrative.
The end was the middle and the beginning was the end. The mental gymnastics we all went through (If harnessed) could've powered a nuclear submarine. Bless her 😊

Bless you for thinking a thread opener needs to be like a good story.

And for struggling so much to understand that it felt like mental gymnastics.

Fortunately enough of us understood the OP perfectly well and didn't need to resort to being rude about them to make ourselves feel superior.

It's really a wonder anyone starts a thread on here anymore. You're really opening yourself up to all kinds of strange attacks and criticism.

Sometimes I read posts and before I’ve even read the comments I think, and you came here for advice/sympathy…?????

To be fair, I mainly come for comments lol

It's not that deep.

It is if someone is just going to mock and criticise. You don't know what impact that will have on the OP. The whole Be Kind message seems to have passed some people by in their need to convince themselves they are better.

It's not a freaking story. It happened in real life and I was doing an info dump BECAUSE I NEEDED TO SHARE WITH SOMEONE.
You know, when something happens to you and you tell family or friends because its significant TO YOU?
I don't have that because I have neither. So therefore mumsnet is an option I do have. Thus I chose to inform anyone who wanted to reply or not.
I'm not in school, college or university so I don't have to do a creative writing essay.
And WTF is Christopher Nolan?
It's a good job my mental health us currently stable.

Oh and having googled what you're talking about.
I'm honoured to be likened to the producer/director of Oppenheimer, which I see was an incredibly popular film.
As for the non linear part? I don't care. I wrote the event how it happened and described certain items in a way that made sense to me.

Then why write anything? It takes less effort to read, think wtf and move on. Than to spend time melting your brain and writing three words that add absolutely nothing to my day.

@Caswallonthefox

Glad you now have your espresso cup and that you've found a good hike for your family's old dinner service.

Time to hide the thread now though I think.
