I need to tell someone!

Today, I was looking for an espresso cup and discovered that they are currently as rare as hens teeth.
While going into one of several charity shops in my town, I was shocked to see a coffee set in a dining set that I had.
This set was from the 60's and was only used for important occasions. I inherited it when my dad died and it sat in a cupboard gathering dust. My dad has been gone since 2005.
I was totally shocked, to the point where I apologised to the shop lady and explained the reason why I was.
15 minutes later, she had my entire collection and I now have an empty cupboard.
Had I not seen this, that set would have sat in a cupboard until I died.

I’ve got the song Espresso by Sabrina Carpenter in my head now.🤣

Misses the point of the thread

I don't think there was a coffee set.

Er OP “was shocked to see a coffee set in a dining set that (she) had”!!

????

Attelina · 13/11/2024 03:01

Is this a step up from the weirdo who deposits random items of make up in charity shops?

Mad threads galore.

😄😄 totally agree. Read a few weird postings tonight.

Oliver Bonas do espresso cups, OP. Maybe a nice Christmas present for yourself!

And what happened to the wasp? 😁

The Wasp is in AA with Linda from Eastenders.

TheKoalaWhoCould · 13/11/2024 05:26

I think what confused people was that you said you were looking for coffee cups. You not only found them but they matched the china you already have, but instead of buying them you gave away all your plates.

I find that Dunelm usually has espresso cups, if you’re still looking. Or ours are from Oliver Bonas.

OldTinHat · 13/11/2024 06:40

I hear you, OP!

And I will share my charity shop 'moment'...

Growing up, we had a biscuit barrell which we (obviously!) used to raid when backs were turned. It was an iconic childhood thing, and I'm 53, so I was disappointed a couple of years ago to visit my parents and the biscuit barrell had vanished. I asked where it had gone and apparently my DF had accidentally broken it.

Months later, in a charity shop, I saw the exact same barrell! This thing must have been a good 50yrs old or more, but I bought it and my DPs were lost for words when I gave it to them.

(Part of me wonders if the 'accidental breakage' was code for them being sick of it, though - and I went and replaced what they wanted rid of...!)

NetZeroZealot · 13/11/2024 07:00

OP I’m selling some espresso cups on eBay at the moment.

I always wonder if anyone ever buys those massive crockery sets of yesteryear in charity shops.

You do know you could have donated it at any time, you didn’t need to find a shop that already had them in?

There’s a few “espressos” being consumed tonight it seems

What is it the Italians call it when they add a drop of something strong? "Corrected Coffee"!

LeticiaMorales · 13/11/2024 07:28

Espresso cups are widely available. See pp.
I've also seen quite a few in charity shops.
I'm very confused about the OP's point, though.

What sort of espresso cups are you looking for, OP? Perhaps we can help you find the perfect ones.

I have a gravy boat here, my late mother's, from the 1970s. When I get round to it, I'm going to take it to a museum that has the matching set on show, and slip it in without their noticing. I hope. If they see me messing, they might think I'm stealing it. Perhaps I'll just hand it in at the desk.

[Prime example of autistic communication. If you know, you know.]

This is an extremely unhealthy comment.
Everyone is welcome on Mumsnet.
You never know what circumstances someone is typing in. They could have
-just lost a child
-just been diagnosed with cancer
-just given birth
-have autism
-have ADHD
-have dyslexia
-have PTSD
-have bipolar
-have schizophrenia
-have menopausal emotions
-have period emotions
-just found out their long term partner cheated
-just found out they miscarried after the fourth round of ivf
-just found out their home is being repossesed
-just found out their mum has to go to a care home
-just stopped themselves from commiting suicide

Can we all be mindful please.
Please be nice.
If you don't have anything be beneficial to say then please don't contribute. You never know were people are in life and their mental state. You never want to be a reason that someone cries or has suicidal ideation.

Hididi11 · 13/11/2024 07:56

Btw.
I was in a charity shop
And saw a dish set that I only ever saw my mum have about 30 years ago
I found it fascinating
It looked brand new there
I'm glad you shared.

Deathraystare · 13/11/2024 07:57

@Caswallonthefox

You made the mistake of coming on here in the evening when the bitter and twisted have had more than a glassful!

I must admit though that it took a few reads to understand what you meant!

Deathraystare · 13/11/2024 07:59

@Hididi11
I was in an 'antique' shop once (really a junk shop) and saw my family's first dining room chairs!

Exactly, completely agree and even if they didn't have those, so flipping what?

Just like some comedy, you don't like it? Then scroll on and don't call people weird for being different to you...
