Having a poo in someone else's house - Is there an etiquette for you?

So this is a question that I never really thought I would be asking on MN. Curiosity has now got the better of me. I had a discussion with my DM recently and she said wouldn't ever have a poo in someone else's house. To be honest, I haven't found myself in a situation where I've been in someone else's house and I've really needed to have one. I usually only go at home or in the workplace toilet. If I was on holiday I would go in the hotel bathroom, or if I was on a plane or train I would use the toilet there. I would basically have one anywhere if I really needed to, as most people presumably would, but there is something about going in someone's house other than my own that makes me not want to.
Is there a certain friendship or relationship threshold that you need to be at with someone to be comfortable with it? For example would you go in a close friend or family member's house, but not someone who is just an acquaintance? I probably wouldn't want to in any of those scenarios.

I only go in my house or round my DMs. Never at work or when I'm out. Have had close calls trying to leg it back from town but would rather nearly shit myself than go anywhere else 😊 I don't even really know why 😐

hby9628 · 10/11/2024 21:43

I pretty much go anywhere however we have a couple of sites at work & one of the loos is a single right where people walk past & I never go there

GetrudeCoppard · 10/11/2024 21:44

I’m one of those weirdos that would never have a shit in another house. Unless I had diarrhoea, even then I’d probably attempt to get home. Same applies to work. I’ve never once had a shit at work and would never have the need to. My brain has trained my arse.

I know this is daft, but I have to say, most, if not all, of my friends and colleagues are the same. My husband and kids are the opposite. They’ll shit with impunity wherever the need takes them.

When you have Crohn's it's needs must. I take my toilet kit wherever I go and make sure I leave the toilet clean That is what they are made for.

Precipice · 10/11/2024 21:48

If you need to go, you need to go. That's what toilets are for.

BobbyBiscuits · 10/11/2024 21:48

I usually go once a day first thing in the morning. If I did suddenly need a second movement, which can happen after a meal, then I'd just go. And make sure I didn't leave a mess obviously!
I would probably find it quite difficult as I'd be shy, so it would only happen if it was very urgent!
I get a bit cross if male guests go for number two in my house. Though I know it has happen I'd much rather they went elsewhere! Unless they're staying overnight.

bamboosockmonster · 10/11/2024 21:50

for goodness sake, holding it in when you need it is bad for your body. as PP says go when you need to go. anyone who gets offended by you using their toilet for the intended purpose is ridiculous.

scalt · 10/11/2024 21:50

I just do it; any loo in any place will do.

It's only on Mumsnet that people say "I never poo in anyone else's loo, and NOBODY poos in my loo, but me; not even my DH, and definitely not workmen, who shit nuclear waste!"

Jennyathemall · 10/11/2024 21:50

here we go again - women terrified to poo anywhere other than home. Whereas men it never even enters their thought processes - if you need to go you go - that’s what the toilet is there for, and that’s how it should be.

Ellepff · 10/11/2024 21:50

Isn’t the etiquette just to flush and wash hands? Turn on the fan or open the window or spritz air freshener if it’s provided and needed.

EconomyClassRockstar · 10/11/2024 21:50

So, if you go and stay at your friends' homes, what do you do if you need to poop? I mean, everyone does it! I only have one rule for guests and that's don't poop in the loo that is off the family room. Mainly because the very old drain there sucks.

NoOneKnowsWhoYouAre · 10/11/2024 21:50

If caught short I'd poop and immediately do a courtesy flush. Then I deal with the clean up. I try never to poo anywhere but in my own bathroom at home. DH poops in his own bathroom and is really really odd about pooping anywhere else.

I’m with you on this too. I can’t go anywhere other than at my own house. That’s it.

Saying that , I have recently been in hospital and was very unwell and had diarrhoea. Not fun at all 😢

Whatanidiot123 · 10/11/2024 21:53

I go if I need to go. News flash - it’s what toilets are for!

I’d personally prefer to go at home but I am not one of those people (like my DH) who goes like clockwork at the same time every day or shuts up shop until at home. I am also not someone with a bad diet or digestive issues so I’m fairly confident I’m not going to destroy anyone’s toilet or leave a smell that will have the next person gagging.

I wouldn’t begrudge anyone a poo at my house either! Well, maybe the builder that started his day with a 20 minute shit that stunk out the whole downstairs of the house every single fucking day.

The etiquette is to leave it clean and unblemished when you’ve finished and do what you need to in order to mitigate any smell - crack open a window, use the air freshener etc.

Rosybud88 · 10/11/2024 21:55

As an IBS sufferer I genuinely view it as a luxury to be able to decide where you do or don’t go for a poo.

It bothered me when I was younger but now I just get on with it, wouldn’t care if someone else needed to poo at my house either. That’s why we have air freshener available etc

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 10/11/2024 21:55

My entire digestive system shuts down the minute I leave home. Which is great for general out and about stuff but (forgive the pun) shit on holidays.......lack of 🙈

AwakeNotThruChoice · 10/11/2024 21:59

I can’t stand the word ‘poop’ when adults say it. As to me it’s a kids word.

sorry not part of the thread I know!

Those PP talking about cleaning the mess up and clearing up after, sounds explosive 🤣

RichardMarxisinnocent · 10/11/2024 21:59

I don't get to decide where I go. I go more than once a day, and when I need to go I need to go, so I just head to the nearest toilet, flush, check the toilet is clean, wash my hands, then open a window if needed

In a new relationship and both of our loos are en-suites. What do we do?!

MelainesLaugh · 10/11/2024 22:02

If you have IBD you don’t have a choice!

EatingAMandarin · 10/11/2024 22:03

Some people, mainly women, are so strange about this. If you need to poo you need to poo. Usually though your body regulates itself not to poo in other peoples houses as its a bit uncouth isnt it. Have you ever had a workman drop a log in your house? You feel violated at the aroma.

JC03745 · 10/11/2024 22:04

Do people really hold poo in for hours/days until they can do it in their own home toilet??? 😮WHY???

What do people do if they stay in a hotel or overnight at someones house?
If I poo in someone elses home, I check I left the bowl clean, spray and wash hands. Not sure there is much more to it really!

Futurethinking2026 · 10/11/2024 22:04

Crohn’s sufferer here. No choice when to go and hate that people still judge you for using the toilet for its exact purpose! Hate that I can’t help that sometimes it smells like rotting flesh as sometimes that’s exactly what it is. Such a joy this disease.

yawn25 · 10/11/2024 22:07

I normally only go once a week. I have never had a bowel movement at work or in public. I even went away for 3 weeks with school when I was 17 and didn’t have one then. I just didn’t have the urge. The minute I got home I had the urge and went then. Once a week has always been normal for me.
