Having a poo in someone else's house - Is there an etiquette for you?

So this is a question that I never really thought I would be asking on MN. Curiosity has now got the better of me. I had a discussion with my DM recently and she said wouldn't ever have a poo in someone else's house. To be honest, I haven't found myself in a situation where I've been in someone else's house and I've really needed to have one. I usually only go at home or in the workplace toilet. If I was on holiday I would go in the hotel bathroom, or if I was on a plane or train I would use the toilet there. I would basically have one anywhere if I really needed to, as most people presumably would, but there is something about going in someone's house other than my own that makes me not want to.
Is there a certain friendship or relationship threshold that you need to be at with someone to be comfortable with it? For example would you go in a close friend or family member's house, but not someone who is just an acquaintance? I probably wouldn't want to in any of those scenarios.

Someone shit in my downstairs toilet last weekend which we don’t do and left skid marks all over the toilet. They didn’t clean it or say anything 😫

I’d never be so disrespectful

What’s the point of having a toilet if you can’t use it for its main purpose?

Yes skids aren’t nice to deal with, especially someone else’s but FFS just Chuck some bleach down, it’s not worth feeling disrespected over.

Why? Because I was 14 and had to go in a public toilet, I walked out, a woman walked in and wrinkled her nose and told me I was disgusting
It stuck with me

She sounded very unkind. I'd have said "So are you for being so rude!" and told her everyone has to go. Horrid woman!

amIloud · 10/11/2024 22:31

@lasagnelle rude to ask someone what their toilet kit is? Ffs it's thread about having a shit 😂

I do shut the bathroom door if in a different house or if visitors are in my house but apart from that, if I need a poo, I'm going to use the loo, why wouldn't you?

LetsRedecorate · 10/11/2024 22:33

I go when I need to. I don’t wish to be ill from holding it in. I’m out of the house at work for 12 hours a day so would be impractical. Same with H. He does have the most rancid smelling poos though (related to medical condition) so if he goes at someone’s house I feel embarrassed for them. He just rides it out and says nothing. It literally stinks out the whole house house - yesterday I was downstairs in lounge and couldn’t stop wretching.

You have to make a soft crash pad out of toilet paper to avoid underwater skids entirely.

JC03745 · 10/11/2024 22:37

@lasagnelle You have responded to 2 different people now that they are rude to ask what a toilet kit is? I too have no idea, nor know why it's rude to ask a question when we clearly have no idea what is consists of???

Does a toilet kit mean carrying toilet paper, wet wipes, suppositories, enemas, stoma bags? Why is it so rude to ask on a poo topic??? 🤔

Onegingerhead · 10/11/2024 22:37

Bizarre thread. Well, I’m a needs must person. Of course I don’t specifically go to friends houses to try their loos, but I really don’t understand how one can hold it.
And even worse, once I had to use shrubs in the park. It was my pants or the shrubs situation. Luckily, it was a big forest park with not so much of human presence at the time of the incident.

Has he tried AirWick VIPoo? That should help.

IBS sufferer here, I've nearly crapped myself so many times I just need to go. The cramps start, then the urge to dump, the sweats, the faintness and the fear of shitting myself. The relief then the explosion. It's horrific tbh. I hate it.

Me, too. It's awful 😖

Happyearlyretirement · 10/11/2024 22:40

I had a brilliant poo at Tescos after a gym work out. I actually thought they would have been proud of it.🤣🤣

londonbanana · 10/11/2024 22:41

I wish I could go away from my house but seriously clam up when I'm out and about. Going on holiday is such a nightmare for my bowels.

That aside, I just really hate smelling other people's shite and likewise. I can think of nothing worse than doing a number 2 at someone's house and them using the toilet right after me.

Some people, mainly women, are so strange about this. If you need to poo you need to poo. Usually though your body regulates itself not to poo in other peoples houses as its a bit uncouth isnt it. Have you ever had a workman drop a log in your house? You feel violated at the aroma.

We moved from my small house to a much bigger house we bought together only half a mile away. The furniture van left the old house and went to the new one whilst we locked up. When we arrived at the new house and went in the stench was horrendous. One of the young men ( who presumably lived entirely on kebabs) had done a nuclear shit in the family bathroom at the top of the stairs. Their boss did have the good grace to look embarrassed. I did feel quite violated tbh.

Futurethinking2026 · 10/11/2024 22:41

My toilet kit:

toilet roll, wet wipes, barrier cream, spare pants, nappy bags, VIP poo spray.

justlonelystars · 10/11/2024 22:42

Never poo anywhere other than home. Once a friend came over and she was just leaving (she lived literally 5 minutes away) and she said “oooh I just need the loo before leaving” and then proceeded to take a massive, noisy shit and leave more skidmarks than the start of Silverstone. No bowel issues whatsoever so I was honestly baffled why she didn’t wait 5 minutes until she was home.

saraclara · 10/11/2024 22:43

People need to regulate their diet and their habits to minimize going elsewhere, in my opinion.

Why @BettyBardMacDonald ? I genuinely don't understand why you find it so offensive.

If you're staying with friends or family for a few days, how do you regulate your diet and habits, and why?

Sebsaloysius · 10/11/2024 22:43

I'm trained to go in the morning, in my own toilet. My daft system tends to do the same as some PPs have already said - if I dare to leave the house overnight, performance anxiety kicks in and it's more para-stalsis than peristalsis in my guts! Ridiculous, isn't it? Especially if this continues into day 3 or 4, when it starts to feel like you're trying to coax a watermelon out...

I don't judge others - if you feel you need to drop the kids off at the pool whilst in my company or in my house, go for it, I'd be mortified if you felt you couldn't go in my company.

That said, we had a new bed delivery last week, and one of the delivery chaps asked if he could use the loo. He was in there an admirable length of time, there were two flushes, and when he appeared (looking a little sweaty around the gills and rather weary), he announced loudly "I've opened a window, but I'd still give it 10". FFS! 😂

Happyearlyretirement · 10/11/2024 22:43

I should have asked for Tesco points for my poo.🤯

My son and DIL had a flat with only 1 loo and a cistern that took 25 minutes to refill. I just couldn't do a poo there.Far too terrifying. My husband is a proud I - shit- anywhere man. Even his bum closed up

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 10/11/2024 22:48

I've heard people say this before and been surprised. If you gotta go, you gotta go. So long as you clean the loo properly, wash your hands and open a window if necessary, I can't see anything wrong with it.

Etiquette is open the window before starting and leave the place as you found it. Hard if you are using a bathroom without a window.

This brought back memories of a guy I used to work with, he was a carpenter and would come to work to poo. He'd have a takeaway drink and his newspaper and spend at least half an hour on the shitter. Really used to annoy me....I was the plumber. In the end I used to just leave and go do another job 😂

NoisyDenimShaker · 10/11/2024 22:49

I poo three times a day. I would never hold it in - and probably couldn't if I tried. What else is a toilet for except going to the loo in it? What you need to do is the courtesy flush, where you flush the loo the second it comes out. Then you do the wiping etc.
