Having a poo in someone else's house - Is there an etiquette for you?

So this is a question that I never really thought I would be asking on MN. Curiosity has now got the better of me. I had a discussion with my DM recently and she said wouldn't ever have a poo in someone else's house. To be honest, I haven't found myself in a situation where I've been in someone else's house and I've really needed to have one. I usually only go at home or in the workplace toilet. If I was on holiday I would go in the hotel bathroom, or if I was on a plane or train I would use the toilet there. I would basically have one anywhere if I really needed to, as most people presumably would, but there is something about going in someone's house other than my own that makes me not want to.
Is there a certain friendship or relationship threshold that you need to be at with someone to be comfortable with it? For example would you go in a close friend or family member's house, but not someone who is just an acquaintance? I probably wouldn't want to in any of those scenarios.

I’m only comfortable going at home however I was diagnosed with Crohn’s about 5 years ago and sometimes it’s a needs must. Funny thing about it is I was always so picky and freaked out about toileting anywhere but home, it wasn’t something I was comfortable discussing found the whole ‘pooh’ topic very uncomfortable. Since having crohn’s and a really awful flare realisation hit me that the worst thing that could happen was that I shat myself but I wasn’t going to die. This was honestly a break through for me and although I don’t like going outside the house it’s taken away the fear for me, shit happens!! Being quite open about it and laughing when the worst has happened has honestly made life so much easier at work and with friends too.

Toilet kit??

Use your imagination it's not hard to think what someone with a bowel issue might take in a toilet kit

JolieFilleCommentCaVa · 10/11/2024 22:22

I have IBS.

When I have to go, I have to go.

Public toilets aren’t the nicest. I never feel as comfortable pooing in someone else’s home compared to my own.

But I’d rather poo in someone else’s toilet than have the risk of soiling myself because of “etiquette”.

Your DM is odd. Of course when you need to go, you go! Who holds that in?

etiquette for when you need to go and you’re at someone’s home is that you use the brush once your done to clean the bowl.

SwordToFlamethrower · 10/11/2024 22:23

If I need a crap, I go?

Toilet blockers are a bit of an issue. Last one happened 2 weeks ago at my mil house.

My DH took the blame 😂

letthemalldoone · 10/11/2024 22:23

I have a chronic bowel condition which means I am just grateful to make it to a loo, any loo!

Flandango · 10/11/2024 22:24

I eat a lot of spicy beans, so hence my poos really really stink. If I am at home and I feel I need to go I will pop round a neighbours for a cup of tea, then when they are boiling the kettle I just pop to quickly use the smallest room.

Someone shit in my downstairs toilet last weekend which we don’t do and left skid marks all over the toilet. They didn’t clean it or say anything 😫

I’d never be so disrespectful

What??? So you don't poo in your own house because you eat beans???

here we go again - women terrified to poo anywhere other than home. Whereas men it never even enters their thought processes - if you need to go you go - that’s what the toilet is there for, and that’s how it should be.

I worked with a young bloke who refused to poo anywhere but at home, if we arranged drinks after work on a Friday he'd go home to poo first and then come meet us later on 😆

My bowels clearly give zero shits about etiquette

When you have Crohn's it's needs must. I take my toilet kit wherever I go and make sure I leave the toilet clean That is what they are made for.

What is your toilet kit?

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 10/11/2024 22:27

Just had a thought - that poor lady who was the "Delta diarrhoea" woman...I know she must have had a bad medical episode obviously but imagine the awful reality of having to be that poor lady. She was clearly very unwell but I think even that would be horrid to get over without feeling that you'd want to just pop in your own loo after forever 😫😪

Alltheyearround · 10/11/2024 22:27

Always poo in work time. A friend once told me this and I often think of it when pooing at work. Shared loos with uni students so I have try to go when no-one else in the loo. Just embarrassing!

Normally just go at home before work but when nature calls I obey. Tend not to go at friends' but only because never needed to, only if I'm staying overnight.

Of course, much more relaxing to go in the comfort of your own home. But I'm not massively hung up about it. We all have bodies right?

Bit rude use your imagination

booisbooming · 10/11/2024 22:27

How, physically, can you hold it in? Wouldn't you be cross-eyed and sweating profusely?

SwordToFlamethrower · 10/11/2024 22:27

BettyBardMacDonald · 10/11/2024 22:19

I had a tradesman here recently for several days and he spent AGES in the toilet a couple of mornings. Just grim.

I don't begrudge him per se, but I did don gloves and spend quite a while disinfecting all the surfaces.

Personally I don't do it anywhere but home. People need to regulate their diet and their habits to minimize going elsewhere, in my opinion. (Medical issues aside, of course.)

Are you out of your mind?! What a load of old shit.

Wimbledonmum1985 · 10/11/2024 22:28

Nothing worse than a workman using your loo. Had a plumber around last week and I had to get the bleach out and antibacterial spray out afterwards.

Allnewtometoo · 10/11/2024 22:28

Those of you saying "I would never..." really should appreciate how lucky you are!

Do people really hold poo in for hours/days until they can do it in their own home toilet??? 😮WHY???

What do people do if they stay in a hotel or overnight at someones house?
If I poo in someone elses home, I check I left the bowl clean, spray and wash hands. Not sure there is much more to it really!

Why? Because I was 14 and had to go in a public toilet, I walked out, a woman walked in and wrinkled her nose and told me I was disgusting
It stuck with me

What??? Their poo is the same as anyone elses

BlueSilverCats · 10/11/2024 22:29

I'm actually jealous of people that can go anywhere anytime (not because they're ill , of course) , especially since I don't actually give a shit (pun intended) who knows or sees or where I am, I just bloody can't !

IBS sufferer here, I've nearly crapped myself so many times I just need to go. The cramps start, then the urge to dump, the sweats, the faintness and the fear of shitting myself. The relief then the explosion. It's horrific tbh. I hate it.
