I’m scared now I’ve realised this

I was thinking that the US public wouldn’t vote for Trump now that it is so apparent he is such a fascist. It’s terrifying to realise that they already know that and that is why they are going to vote for him.
I’m scared for the world.

The difference is the rethoric whose fault the current situation is, and strategies how they think this better future should be achieved.

Trump is not Hitler

Well of course not. Hitler is dead. But Trump is definitely walking down the same path as Hitler towards authoritarianism. I think his Chief of Staff and generals who worked with him would know a little better than you, and they agree. There's a difference between promising a good future, and a future with no immigrants who are garbage, vermin, (remember how Hitler spoke of the Jews?), going after political enemies, getting rid of career civil servants, undermining the elections....do I really need to go on? Project 2025 anyone? I can't believe people still have to explain this stuff to some.

Is Sunak Hitler aswell then? Cause he said he would put all illegal migrants on planes to Rwanda.

nolongersurprised · 30/10/2024 08:35

I can’t stand Trump but I think it’s naive to assume that the press on the left is unbiased.

Remember the Loudoun County rape? It first turned up on my Twitter feed as a left wing piece about a dad being vilified as a “domestic terrorist” as a school board meeting. There was a picture of him being dragged out of a meeting. He looked pitiful, top ridden up to expose an overweight stomach.

However, what happened was that his daughter’s High School had a policy that anyone could enter the bathroom they identified with. His daughter was anally raped by a boy in a skirt (whose mother later said he didn’t identify as trans but was being fluid with his gender expression). The school tried to downplay it, it was the father who called the police and presented to hospital with her where she had a forensic examination.

At a school board meeting, the single sex vs gender identity issue was discussed, the members were told there had never been an issues with boys in female spaces and when the dad disputed this he was arrested and thrown out.

And the left wing response? Apparently, the situation was “complex” because the boy and girl had previously been in a relationship 🙄

For me, that was an epiphanic episode, the press on “both sides” lie and spin.

I hope Trump doesn’t win, but I think it’s simplistic to blame Fox News lies for disinformation, when media bias goes both ways

There is no doubt, in my mind, that Trump is a misogynist.

But all this talk of him walking in on 15 year old in a beauty pageant is so hypocritical when the democrats think that women and girls should have males in their spaces if they utter the magic words 'I am a woman'.

Listen to the voices of the female athletes losing opportunities and being subject to voyeurism if they refuse to believe that man is a woman. They are being threatened and called bigots and having opportunities removed.

Trump is a misogynist but so is Harris because she refuses to listen to these women and is complicit in dismantling single sex spaces and opportunities for women.

Horrible time to be a woman in the USA terrible misogyny both sides of the political divide.

RedToothBrush · 30/10/2024 08:45

It is extremely unlikely that Harris will win.

The American public rarely reelect a party in times of economic hardship. The American economy isn't great and the cost of living has shot up. That's what it boils down to.

The election is decided in a handful of swing states. Most of them have particular economic challenges.

Harris is also a woman and not white. It shouldn't matter but America is much less accepting than the impression we have from the media.

Harris has been something of a non entity as a VP. Normally VPs have a pet issue or are seen to 'stand' for something but Harris never really established herself as having one. Even Democrats have said this.

I don't think anyone really fully understands the implications of what will happen if Trump is reelected.

He's pro-Russia and anti-ukraine. And he's pro-Israel. His son in law is very pally with the Israeli government.

Never mind his attitudes to women, democracy or anything else.

It is very scary indeed and I just don't see Harris winning under the circumstances.

I just looked it up.

It's not really similiar though is it.

The different states in the USA have different amounts of votes.

For example California has around 50 votes, whereas another state will have only 5 votes.

Edited

It works the same way, here some constituencies have more voters, individual votes also don't count.

For example, Lib Dem and Reform got approx the same number of actual votes, but Lib Dem have I think 70 seats and Reform 5.

This is why you get the discussion about Proportional Representation every election.

lifeturnsonadime · 30/10/2024 08:55

And on reproductive rights. Pre election Obama promised to codify Roe v Wade so that it would be impossible for the Supreme Court to overturn it.

Seems that it wasn't given the importance by the Democrats that women were promised.

This enabled a Republican led Senate to overturn it whilst Biden was president.

It was avoidable had the Democrats kept their promise.

So all this talk of the Democrats being the great saviour of women's rights is not entirely correct.

I don't think that women will be better off under the Republicans but I think it is blinkered to suggest that the Democrats are the saviours of women. When push comes to shove they are not.

That's the first I've heard about walking in on 15 year old girls. IF its true then obviously it's wrong but I don't blindly believe everything that's said about Trump as there's been so many lies. Obviously the establishment is very against trump and the smear campaign is relentless They really will stop at nothing and I find it frustrating that so many get caught up in the hate.
The thing with biden I saw with my own eyes and it made me sick to my stomach. To give him the benefit of the doubt, maybe it was his dementia making him behave so inappropriately but either way it was very disturbing.

Are you American? If not who cares. Luckily you’ve not got a vote there.

That's really amusing that you ignored everything else in my post and the one saving grace you found is that he's not sending immigrants to camps? Is that it? Well, he did. He put them in cages at the border. That's what he's done so far. Hitler didn't start off by sending them to camps either. He "just" wanted them to wear a star at the beginning, assuring them that it wouldn't go any further..

Is Sunak Hitler aswell then? Cause he said he would put all illegal migrants on planes to Rwanda.

It's typical of Trump supporters to take one aspect of his behaviour and deflect, deny and distract, rather than take all of his actions, words, rhetoric, previous records into consideration. It is such a lazy argument. Sending the Jews out of Germany itself wouldn't have made Hitler a fascist, it is much more than that. If you can't understand that and see the parallel in Trump's behaviour, I can't help you. If dealing with the immigration problem was Trump's true goal, why did he sink the bipartisan immigration bill that the republicans wrote? I'm sure you would have a creative answer to that, as all those who worship at his alter do. I won't waste my time trying to make cult believers see any other point of view. It is futile.

Jessie1259 · 30/10/2024 10:19

Trump may be awful but he's been president before and the world didn't fall apart. I'll feel sorry for the Americans that didn't vote for him but what can you do?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/10/2024 10:21

What brought the swing in popularity?

I'm not sure it's about the opponent gaining popularity so much as the incumbent and their party losing it, @rosestone19 - and as said before there are Democrats who'll never forgive the leaders for the mess they've allowed to happen

It may be that a period of Trump will be what's necessary in order for them to sort themselves out, and if they can manage it at least that's something positive to look forward to

Marjorie Taylor Greene. Elected member of the House of Representatives. Supports gun rights, doesn't believe in the theory of evolution or a woman's right to choose. Wikipedia says this:

After Hurricane Helene caused destruction in several American states, Greene in October 2024 posted online "a map of hurricane affected areas with an overlay of electoral map by political party shows how hurricane devastation could affect the election", showing many Republican-leaning areas affected, then she wrote later that day: "Yes they can control the weather … It's ridiculous for anyone to lie and say it can't be done."[291][292]

Oh, she is off her trolley. Never stopped referring to him as 'President Trump'. To think that someone like that could ever be in any position of power is chilling.

Clinton - 2 terms
Obama - 2 terms
Biden - 1 term

What did any of these Democrat Presidents do to protect womens rights? What did they do to protect the right to abortion in law?

Biden & Obama pretended and lied that they didn't know what a woman was, and actively eroded the rights of women and girls. Destroyed Title IX protections for women and girls. Harris has said she will give tax payer funded "sex reassignment surgeries" to any male inmate who wants to claim he's a woman, and she will move these men to womens jails.

Biden gave us so many "first female men" & celebrated them as if women had taken these posts for the very first time, instead of men in dresses. If the democrats can't see how insulting this is they are truly lost.

Harris is now claiming she will be the one to protect abortion rights - campaign ads I've seen she is claiming this. But when you lie about biologoical sex you are going to hugely undermine trust - many many women will not vote Harris because of this.

Perhaps its not a matter of Trump winning, but many many ordinary Americans who would otherwise vote Democrat turning away from the clown show they have turned their party into.

No one trusts them anymore.

If the "world didn't fall apart" is the bar people set for themselves, you can't really help them can you? But realistically speaking, so many senior staff from his previous adminstration including his chief of staff and military generals have spoken out about how they had to put the brakes on his orders and had to restrain him from carrying out certain acts. Mike Pence refused to carry out his order to overturn the elections. Governors in states like Georgia refused to "find" votes. This time Trump has made sure he doesn't repeat those mistakes. Vance will do anything he's asked. All the voices of reason within his old administration have left and will have nothing more to do with Trump. This time there will be no guardrails. So I wouldn't bet on the world won't fall apart bit. For one, he will not raise a finger to help Ukraine and Europe will have Russia on its doorstep once again.

I’m neither a Trump nor Harris supporter. Both are bad candidates. But Trump gets a lot of hate, and I think it’s worth pointing out that Harris is just as bad as his, if not probably worse.

So she sexually assaults women? Is a convicted felon? A rapist? Has incited insurrection?

Kamala Harris's judicial record is impressively bad. It goes far beyond what some would write off as "rookie mistakes"; showing a severe problem that has be present and undeniable her entire career as a Prosecutor.
To start - her record as the district attorney of San Fransisco (2004-2011). In 2010 Harris was accused of withholding information from a courtroom, violating the defendant's constitutional rights.
Harris championed legislation that would prosecute parents of children who were habitually truant in elementary school. Grades K-5. This disproportionately effected low income students and furthered their disadvantage.
In 2014, she spoke out against a federal judge in Orange County who ruled the the death penalty was unconstitutional. The ACLU and several Public Defender's in California condemned Harris for this and future actions of hers.
In her further career, these problems persisted.
She stood against propositions to make certain felonies become misdemeanors, laughed at the idea of legalizing Marijuana, and opposed legislation that would require state wide body cam wearing by officers.
She has a history of wrongful conviction cases which I wont get into all the details but please read the the articles for more information.
Harris has also an incredibly high incarceration rate of African American males for crimes such as smoking Marijuana. 1,500 to 2,000 convictions are the most common results I have seen. She has often dismissed cases regarding complaints against an officer, withehld evidence from a man on death row, and has continued to keep wrongfully convicted felons in jail.
You can come to your own conclusions about Harris and again, I understand the historical significance of her role. But that is not something to focus on when choosing a candidate or person to support.
