I’m scared now I’ve realised this

I was thinking that the US public wouldn’t vote for Trump now that it is so apparent he is such a fascist. It’s terrifying to realise that they already know that and that is why they are going to vote for him.
I’m scared for the world.

Well it seems that America has decided.

Not the outcome that many of us wanted.

As I said in my first post. Time for the Democrats to reflect and engage with why it is that so many people in America would prefer to vote for a convicted felon than vote for them.

It does strike me though that it will be a long time before we ever see another woman on the ticket which, of itself, is very sad.

Unless the Republicans put a woman forward in 4 years’ time and the Democrats match it. Unlikely though.

Yes, I think only way the Democrats would put another woman forward it to match a Republican candidate.

Now I’m really scared for the world. Let’s just hope that things don’t turn out as badly as we fear.

I mean it would be hard to find a worst man out there than Trump.

Do you remember when he said all the sexual things to his own daughter.

I remember when an interviewer asked ivanka "what is something that you both like doing " she was talking about hobbies.

and trump said "sex!!"

Lots of men out there worse than Trump. How about Putin, Hanas and their supporters, the assorted warlords throughout the world?
I think that a lot of people need to get a grip, all the weeping and wailing about his win is just ridiculous. Nothing really bad happened during Trumps's last reign compared to Biden's and vocally hating Trump like a pantomime baddie seems to be tediously fashionable. Emily Maitliss bursting into tears onscreen when hearing about Trump' s success is laughable, she's paid to be a professional.
Trump is a result of democracy in action and whether you like him or not (I don't) he's here to stay for the next four years. The histrionics are OTT and we need to move on and think about solutions to the terrible things going on in other parts of the world.

Except you'll be getting Trump with the guardrails off, because anyone with any integrity has jumped the GOP ship.

And I'm going to guess you either know nothing about Project 2025, or you believed Trump when he said that he didn't know anything about it and it was nothing to do with him.

But hey ho - 'may you live in interesting times'. Lets see what happens when you put a climate change denialist in the most powerful job in the world, at the moment when all experts are saying that we're teetering on a knife edge in regard to climate catastrophe.

izimbra · 06/11/2024 12:51

"we need to move on and think about solutions to the terrible things going on in other parts of the world."

What - like the rise of dangerous expansionist autocrats in China and Russia, who'll be creaming themselves at the knowledge that the US now has an isolationist in the top job?

I'm sure a complete failure to address climate change will be incredibly helpful to the growing migrant crisis caused by climate change across the world.

https://lordslibrary.parliament.uk/climate-change-induced-migration-uk-collaboration-with-international-partners/

"Climate change is likely to increase migration flows over the coming decades. Increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather events are expected to increase “forcible displacements”, and the “slow-onset” impacts of climate change are expected to make the hardest hit regions uninhabitable. The UK is involved with several international forums which aim to discuss and cooperate on these issues."

And there's always a possibility of another pandemic - which will be even more fun once Trump has installed Kennedy - an anti-vaxxer in a senior post in public health.

Fun, fun, fun.

AmadeustheAlpaca · 06/11/2024 13:42

@izimbra So what are you planning to do about Trump or are you just going to moan about him constantly. It's like all the pro Palestinian protests in Britain, constant noise but they dont change anything except cause bad feeling, disruption and hassle for people going about their everyday life.
And not all experts agree that we're teetering on a climate change knife edge. This is what I mean about over emotive language.
Trump is not a nice man, but we're stuck with him and as ordinary people in the UK we can't do anything about him so no point in getting overwrought.

The overwhelming consensus within the scientific community is that climate change is a huge threat to the future stability of the planet and to the lives of millions and millions of people currently living in areas most affected by climate change.

That's not 'over emotive language'. Those are just facts.

'Trump is not a nice man'

He's a fascist, a climate change denialist and a criminal. And he's now in the most powerful job in the world.

But you carry on minimising the threat he poses if it's more comfortable for you.

AmadeustheAlpaca · 06/11/2024 15:00

@izimbra I'm not minimising the threat of Trump I'm just not going to lose any sleep over a situation I can't personally change. I thought Biden was a threat due to his obvious senility, not a good look on the world stage when dealing with other leaders.
@izimbra Are you one of these posters who has signed up with Mumsnet to make a point or do you change your user name regularly cos I don't think I've seen your name before?
Love the way you equate Fascists and criminals with climate change denial. You need to calm down.

Have you ever spent time with a person with dementia?

Do you know anyone with dementia that could deliver the state of the nation speech or engage in high level diplomacy?

Or is 'dementia' evidenced for you by Biden, like Trump and lots of other elderly people, sometimes seeming forgetful, rambling, getting names mixed up?

I find it so interesting that you're here insisting you're not a Trump supporter while repeating Republican talking points.

Biden will actually go down in the international record as having accomplished more in policy terms than most US presidents of the past century.

izimbra · 06/11/2024 17:01

"Love the way you equate Fascists and criminals with climate change denial. You need to calm down."

Trump is a fascist, a criminal AND a climate change denialist. I'm not 'equating' one with another. I'm saying he's all of those things.

Interesting to read that, in Selzer's Iowa poll, women over 65 are out in force behind Harris. That Harris leads with men, in this group, by 2 per cent - but by 35 per cent among women over 65. The women who fought for these rights.

“I can’t give you a data-driven answer, which would be my preference,” said Ms Selzer. “It was over the summer that Iowa’s six-week ban on abortion went into effect, after all the court challenges were taken care of. So the decision being made, the law going into force, and then people living with it for a while."

In retrospect, it’s interesting how very wrong this much-feted poll was this year. Nate Silver said it was wrong at the time, though j

It's interesting to rtft and see how many posters claimed to be against Trump, or to be pro-Dem, but that they couldn't vote for Harris/Dems because Harris/Dems were pro-trans, didn't support keeping women safe, put men's rights over women's, or some other form of these sentiments. Saying they were not republicans legitimized and gave weight to their purported stance of being unable to vote Dem. This is a tactic to sway a vote. It entangled many of us in debate which allowed them to continue to lay out their agenda. It's important to identify manipulation in all its' forms. In the aftermath it's jarring at the increase in wealth of certain players and one must wonder why so many average people want to allow a small group to dominate financially when trickle down economics is a proven failure and entrenches a race to the bottom desperation.

In some cases it's a tactic, but in others they're GC extremists who may not particularly like Trump or the Republicans, but such is their extremism that they would vote for anybody who offered to do something about those issues, whether they were sincere or not, which Trump certainly isn't.

I'd say there are less like that than an online presence seems to make us believe. Surely, any feminist, at core, would logically defend a woman's right to govern her own body first.

That's certainly the way I feel about it, and you may be right that the more extreme of the GC people (that is, the ones who aren't really just right wing hatemongers) are more of an internet phenomenon than anything.

I think phenomena is the horse well out the barn now. Online manipulation is so ubiquitous and sophisticated it's difficult, impossible, to appreciate. And we're just haughty enough to think we're immune/able to identify it.

That's a lot to unpack, I think.
On the surface, yes. Wittingly or unwittingly.
I think manipulation is insidiously present and that free opinions are in part, illusory.
For example, how did trans issues become such a big issue in this election? Why did the Reps hammer it as such? I think it was just another means to scare the average person who may not have any direct experience with trans people, think live and let live, generally, with then were shaken into a bit if fear about their own rights. It certainly served to fracture left leaning beliefs. I think it's an example of outside agents successfully infiltrating western politics to destabilize democracy.

ETA, sorry to be the last poster! If anyone wants to start a follow- on I'll happily contribute and exchange thoughts.
