I'm in the very fortunate position of being able to invest a bit in some useful things.

I'm wondering about an air fryer. Would that be a good choice, would you say?

What else might be good?

So far I've got:
A really good new mixing bowl!!!!!
Possibly an air fryer
Possibly a new waterproof coat

I've just been left some money ,it's entirely going on things to make me happy -

Couple more good bras
New perfume
Silver jewellery
Thinking about a Phillips Lumea

One of these. Life transforming in the under stairs cupboard department.

I’ve just bought an electric bike for that amount - it’s fantastic! Has put off the inevitable mobility scooter (knee arthritis) for a while
I know hoovers are boring, but I’ve just been given a second one which I keep upstairs - so much easier than lugging one up the stairs

Proper non stick bake ware and someone to fit a cat flap.

The air fryer I have has made such a difference to my life so I would definitely get one if you don't already have one! Mine is the ninja one with two drawers and it's much better and easier to use than the older circular ones.

I would probably stay on the kitchen theme and buy a really good set of knives and pots and pans too.

If there was money left over after that I would keep it for every day spending so I could treat myself guilt free to a nice lunch and random hot chocolates on winter mornings.

The dual Ninja one is the one I've been looking at - have heard good things.

A couple more good knives is a good idea.

Zyliss knives are great

Storynanny1 · 09/10/2024 19:40

Yes the ninja duel - the biggest size- is great, We’ve had ours just over a year and hardly use the big oven anymore.

A sock marriage guidance counsellor to stop dh’s socks from running away from their ohs.

This made me smile... you've got a way of making boring things interesting.
Ever thought if writing a book?

That's so interesting what you've said about your experience of using both kinds of air fryer.
I've only ever used the circular type, as I liked the idea of the paddle turning over foods such as chips.
However, I've gone through so many of that design, as I've found that they are not well designed.
The paddle snaps (you can get replacements on eBay) and the lid fitting you push down to start the frying cones apart after not too long,... I was humming and harring about a two drawer Nunja, and your post had given me encouragement to make the change... my current circular air fryer has to be held down by a heavy object to stop it flipping apart in the middle. Arrrrghh !!!

As much unpaid parental leave as that would buy

NorthernGirlie · 09/10/2024 19:55

Ninja air fryer
Laser hair removal on my tache

A decent bin and bin bags. Sounds ridiculous but I was sick of bin bags splitting- we buy ££ ones from amazon that perfectly fit the bin and never split now

Carpet for the stairs and living room

Wrapunzel · 09/10/2024 20:02

We upgraded our Airfryer to a ninja dual drawer one and use it at least once a day. The oven only goes on for pizza or roast dinners!
We invested in some Egyptian cotton bedding from John Lewis and an electric underblanket and it's such a treat at bedtime.
I have also just bought some proper skincare from the ordinary and feel like a grown up finally at 45 Blush

HelenHywater · 09/10/2024 20:05

I'd just get a proper bean to cup coffee machine - a sage one probably from John Lewis.

A properwater proof raincoat is great to have - i have one that like a mac rather than a sporty coat, can wear anywhere. Waterproof knee length boots too - i have Ecco ones with goretex. Cashmere scarf, hat and gloves - so soft and cosy.

Being warm and dry while out on rainy winter day is bliss.

Thighdentitycrisis · 09/10/2024 20:11

A shower if that’s enough money

Hollietree · 09/10/2024 20:11

15 years ago I was gifted some money and bought a designer handbag for £1000. Something I never would have done normally. I use it nearly every week, it still looks in immaculate condition and it still makes me feel like a million dollars when I use it.

I have a couple of proper waterproof coats already, but none of them are quite right. Have got goretex boots and cashmere hat and scarf - gloves are a good idea.

We need an oven. Don’t have one. We also need a tumble dryer. That will probably eat up that £1000 but if we had anything left, it would be on things like mixing bowls, cooking trays and new saucepans.

Mydahliasareshit · 09/10/2024 20:14

Robot lawnmower to go with our Eufy vacuum.

Eight hours for a temp input person to just put all the old big (rare) books we no longer want on Amazon used. Niche area so would definitely sell to collectors.

USB rechargeable fairy lights and cordless lamps.

A new mini chopper to replace the yellowed cracked one with 15 miles on the clock.

LinesAndLinesAndLinesAndLines · 09/10/2024 20:14

Dishwasher
A new Dyson
A new pair of uggs.

Optional things that have been really worth it over last few years...

  • Waterproof and winter coats and outdoors gear that look good. Some from Mountain Warehouse and some off eBay (I'd say 1 in 3 off eBay ok as you can't try them on) . Cost per wear so low.
  • Wardrobe upgrade of casual comfortable basics - good jeans, jumpers, shirts, etc. style has changed to oversized over the last few years, so all my fitted stuff felt quite dated.
  • "Most" travel, short trips and days out (apart from a badly planned solo trip). Things like a night away in a hotel room break for <£100.
  • Good noise cancelling Bluetooth headphones.
  • Books (second-hand eBay ). I know library is free but allocating £4-5 here and there for something I really want to read that arrives on my doorstep is worth it
  • Lunch out where I knew I really loved the food and couldn't do the same myself so a calculated treat.
  • Tassimo lattes. Thermos.
  • Bottle of whisky and fancy crystal glasses so I can drink a nightcap
  • Home aesthetic stuff - wool blankets, changed walls to neutral calming cream so it all looks like a spa room (done on the cheap by me). This was done alongside a clear out/declutter
  • Tall Uggs which I use as sheepskin slippers for home really
  • Water flosser for teeth and a stockpile of the really good Colgate whitening toothpaste.
  • I want to get new glasses to upgrade my look too but not right now

Stuff I could have left

  • Some clothing where I was just buying for brand and didn't really love it
  • Perfume...there is such a big markup and there's some good super cheap stuff I like just as much.
  • Meals out and takeaways I didn't really enjoy but more habitual. If I grab them too often I stop enjoying them and they stop being a treat. They need to be scheduled in.
  • Jewellery - I only wear costume but really I rarely wear that much so it languishes. Ditto with accessories like scarves and bags...I like them on once but have too many for my needs.
  • Expensive shampoos and conditioners. They make little difference and seem to be diminishing returns past 4/5 pounds
