Misty or Bunty?

I used to love Misty when I was young. It had a massive influence on me at 10. All the other girls in my village read Bunty which was dire. I even became a goth and dyed my blond hair red and then black when I was 18 because of Misty as well as the ‘Sisters of Mercy’ and ‘The Fields of the Nephilim’.

Whatever happened to the comic?

I found a box of them in my mother’s loft when I was clearing it out and despite thinking I had read it for years, it looks like I only seemed to have a year’s worth of comics. Did anyone else read Misty and remember it fondly?

@MadeleineMummy all the girls comics died out 😭😭😭
Bunty was the last survivor just scrapping into the 21st century by ending in 2001.
BUT......
Every so often there are specials. This is available NOW !!
The stories are totally weird. I got my copy from WHSmith.

Yes, I remember Misty. There are some on Ebay!

Needmorelego · 09/10/2024 12:37

@MadeleineMummy also in my mind I read Tammy for years.....turns out I probably read it for about 4 months before it folded 😂😭

I’m pretty sure Misty wasn’t showing that much cleavage in the original comics…

Bramshott · 09/10/2024 12:38

Also Judy!

Needmorelego · 09/10/2024 12:38

@EmpressaurusDeiGatti Misty was a bit borderline as to who was actually reading it.
Popular with the 2000AD crowd apparently (ie teenage boys 😂)

mynewhouse · 09/10/2024 12:40

I liked Twinkle. I used to get old copies from cat boot sales and second hand shops.

Viviennemary · 09/10/2024 12:41

Apparently Misty only lasted for two years. Bunty ran on for decades. I loved it. There was a comic called Spellbound much on the same lines as Misty. It didn't last very long either.

Latenightreader · 09/10/2024 12:42

I used to buy annuals in charity shops and jumble sales in the late 80s and 90s. A friend of mine had a subscription to Bunty as a present from her grandparents and wasn't interested so passed them on to me. I was really disappointed when they stopped!

Gelasring · 09/10/2024 12:42

Mandy for me - I had an uncle who gave me a subscription for my birthday. I wasn't cool enough for Misty

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/10/2024 12:42

I’m 60. Can’t remember Misty at all. Looks like an old Hammer House of Horrors poster 😁

Needmorelego · 09/10/2024 12:43

Bunty was the longest running one.
43 years and the 4 Marys never made it out of the 3rd form 😂

ChocNice · 09/10/2024 12:45

Just 17 surely?

Needmorelego · 09/10/2024 12:47

@ChocNice nah....Just17 never had awesome stories about Victorian orphans, ponies, boarding schools, switched at birth twins, evil stepmothers, cursed dolls.....

MadeleineMummy · 09/10/2024 13:18

Woah, looking at the prices on eBay. I am going to be bagging up and selling my Mistrys this week.

Hi @MadeleineMummy - just wanted to give you a big THANK YOU for starting this thread as it jogged a long-ago memory of a girls' comic strip I came across at my granny's house when I was around 8 years old, about a woman who comes into some money and decides to complete her secondary education...joining her 13-year-old daughter at boarding school!

I thought it was probably in Bunty and called "My Schoolgirl Mum" - close enough for Google to identify it as "The Oldest Schoolgirl - That's My Mum!" which appeared in Mandy comic from October 1970 to January 1971.

My mum's youngest sister was only a few years older than me and it must have been in her comic stash that I discovered at my granny's that day.

Tracy was delivered every Saturday with the newspaper. When I grew out of that I switched to Girl, before moving onto Jackie, My Guy and Just 17.

AlisonWonderbra · 09/10/2024 15:30

I thought this was about baby names for a moment

Needmorelego · 09/10/2024 15:31

@AreThereSomewhereIslands I don't know how to search for it but a couple of years ago there was a whole thread on favourite comic stories.
There is a lot of love for the old comics.

redtrain123 · 09/10/2024 15:32

Think my annuals are still boxed up at my parents.

BaronessBomburst · 09/10/2024 15:32

I was one of the 2000 AD crowd. Also CRISIS, which I think only lasted a year or two. I read Bunty, Twinkle, Readers Digest, and Woman's Weekly too. I sold my comics years ago but kept the graphic novels.

Needmorelego · 09/10/2024 15:32

@AlisonWonderbra I did suggest "Bunty" as a name for my daughter 😂
She didn't end up being called Bunty so one day in the future if I ever get a cat or dog then I am definitely using the name.

elozabet · 09/10/2024 15:36

I used to read Tammy and Misty. I read it up until I realised a boy in my class did the paper round and delivered them to my house. He made a comment about it and I got embarrassed and cancelled it. I remember my brothers being annoyed as they used to read my misty magazine as well 🤣.

Needmorelego · 09/10/2024 15:43

@AreThereSomewhereIslands yes that's the one !
(I couldn't remember if I actually started the thread but that is one of my old usernames.....so I guess I did 😂)
