Told at New Look they "don't do paper receipts"

Anyone else had this?
I was in New Look in the trafford centre today and was asked for my email address for the receipt (standard practice now I know)
I said no thank you I would prefer a paper receipt (standard acceptable reply) and the cashier said no they dont do paper receipts. I said I wasn't going to give her my email address and after a bit of this back and forth and a short stand off she eventually produced a receipt from under the counter.

Is this what New Look staff are asking of their staff now? To lie in order to harvest personal information?
It was really uncomfortable for both me and the poor NMW cashier and has made me less inclined to want to shop there again.

I had the same issue and just replied no I don’t have an email I’ll take a paper receipt please. They can’t send you away without a receipt.

I also have similar issues in Holland and Barrett where they persistently demand a loyalty card before payment for which I don’t have or need. I only ever buy one product from them and always pay cash.

When certain places request an email address I blankly refuse to give it its your personal information and if you don’t want to disclose that information in public then you shouldn’t have to.

Farting · 29/09/2024 22:02

When they abolish cash they’ll track everything anyway, it’s just one step closer to that.

Cynic17 · 29/09/2024 22:02

This has been happening for years in shops. I always refuse to give them my email address, telling them they don't need it. Then they either give me a paper receipt, or I just leave without one.

purpleme12 · 29/09/2024 22:08

In my new look they try to get my email but they're fine when I ask for paper

It was River Island that was the problem. They said they only do email. I said can't I have paper. They said we could do email and paper if you want. I said I just want paper. I'm pretty sure she batted back again but in the end she relented and gave paper.
That was definitely the most insistent I've had. She really didn't want to do it

nongnangning · 29/09/2024 22:11

Yes this is SO irritating. I always ask for paper too.
I bought one of the Longchamp foldable totes a couple of years ago, about £100.
"And your email address", purred the assistant expectantly.
"No thanks," I said, "Just a paper receipt please"
She set her face in a look of deep disapproval. "You are a member of a special club. This is an exclusive bag. We need records in case you ask to have it repaired and lose the receipt."
To my shame I said, "It's just a bag and it's one of the cheapest ones you sell. I will be fine with paper."
You would have thought I had killed a kitten in front of her. I swear she was thinking of snatching it out of my hands and refusing to sell it to me 😁

Justleaveitblankthen · 29/09/2024 22:13

Now I know this, I will ask at the Till before I hand over my money (and I almost always use cash)
If they say no paper receipt, I'll walk away 😁

Chateauneufdu · 29/09/2024 22:17

Just set up a junk email for this purpose, eg drama.llama@somuchdrama

Yes exactly. Just have a burner email address for them, it's not really anything to get worked up about.

outforawalkbiatch · 29/09/2024 22:22

I have a burner one too
It's basically shoppingXXX Hotmail
XXX I use my initials

I can't be arsed standing around spelling out an email address that there's a good chance they'll get wrong anyway and then having to unsubscribe from the marketing stuff later when they could just produce a paper receipt in a 20th of the time.

I actually find it really annoying, anything really spendy I order online anyway, and they come with invoices/ normal acknowledgements.

Most of the other things are just an attempt at data capture. Added to which it’s annoyingly time-consuming at the till, to spell out my non-Anglo name. I now just say no ta unless it’s a benefit for me.

Apolitia · 29/09/2024 22:29

I also don’t get the idea of setting up a burner email for in-person purchases. It’s valueless and you don’t need it. Harder with online purchases where email field is not skippable ….

Genuine question, why are you so against this stuff? For me, the things you list make life simpler and I embrace the change. I’m always looking for eats to make things easier.

T4phage · 29/09/2024 22:31

They're making a lot of money from selling on personal details though and I object to that on principle. I refuse to have store cards either. I'm not bothered if the government know I buy my knickers at Sainsburys, but I'd object to Sainsburys selling my phone number and email address to whichever scammers will pay for them. It doesn't take much for your personal details to get out there then you're at risk of fraud.

StormingNorman · 29/09/2024 22:33

They don’t want to harvest your personal information. It’s useless to them unless you give permission for them to use it. They just don’t want to pay for till rolls.

Not true. The information is sold on.

Stagsflying · 29/09/2024 22:35

Doesn't bother me, I don't want the paper, think of the trees why won't you

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 29/09/2024 22:37

“My email address? What’s that, then?”

Every time.

”You can send messages on the internet? Since when? No one told me..!”

Have some fun with it.

Apolitia · 29/09/2024 22:37

My only opposition to a lot of this stuff is it actually does not make my life easier.

giving email at a till: takes ages and serves no function for
me

parking apps - same, takes ages to go through, much longer than putting a couple of coins in the slot and getting a ticket out. The phone version is awful and slow, if I am asked if I want to park my friend’s blue Nissan car in location arse end of nowhere I will scream into the void.

I also very much resent orgsnisations adding a “service charge” to such telecoms services which are inevitably cheaper than people-administered services.

I like this.

purplespink · 29/09/2024 22:41

I had a dilemma with this before because a few months ago I spent over £200 at New Look, was told no paper receipts, gave my email, had no signal in shop and checked when I got home; they must've typed it in wrong because I never received it. What would have happened if I needed to return something?

InfoSecInTheCity · 29/09/2024 22:43

They tried that on me the other day, I said 'fine, well as per the law (GDPR) you need to provide the privacy policy to me to read and agree to before I can give you informed consent to process my data so I'll take a copy of that please.' All of a sudden a magic receipt materialised, and it turns out that they were able to provide one all along.

It's a scammy move driven by New Look Head Office to capture as much data as possible so they can sell it. Doing it at the till point like this means that no one gets the opportunity to opt out of their data being sold so they assume consent which is on very dodgy ground legally.

If you don't want to challenge it then at the very least set up an anonymous spam email address solely for this purpose so you can reduce the amount of crap you have to deal with in your in box.

Like the PP, I embrace most of those things you listed because they make my life easier. It seems weird to rally against something that makes my life easier for no reason apart from for some vague nothing of not feeling patronised.
