Please settle a debate 😀

I always do ours with baked beans for the kids and sketti hoops for me (none bb eater)

My mate has hers with bread and butter 😱

Peas and pickled red cabbage or beetroot.

We put peas in the pie but yes then red pickled things mash the mash go pink

edwinbear · 22/09/2024 12:11

Peas. My mum used to serve it with peas and chips. Being a bit more health conscious these days I don’t serve it with the chips - it was a spectacular dinner though!

crumblingschools · 22/09/2024 12:13

Do people have dry cottage pies to have to add gravy. We put carrots and celery in ours with tinned tomatoes and stock. We also put leeks in the mash on top. So a meal in itself

Nothing, it doesn't need anything as everything is in the cottage pie.

Hopebridge · 22/09/2024 12:17

My MIl always did it with garlic bread. I sometimes have it with broccoli on the side as wouldn't add that in a cottage pie :)

EveryOtherNameTaken · 22/09/2024 12:17

Nothing. It contains every food element necessary. Maybe just a bit of extra gravy.

ichundich · 22/09/2024 12:18

Nothing, there is everything in it - meat, carbs, cheese, vegetables.

Itsamumslife2024 · 22/09/2024 12:21

We have lots of veg in ours as well as kidney beans so serve it on its own

Zonder · 22/09/2024 12:21

Green beans.

Zanatdy · 22/09/2024 12:22

Usually some veg, maybe some beetroot. Occasionally with baked beans. Haven’t had it for years

Growlybear83 · 22/09/2024 12:26

We don't have anything with cottage pie or shepherd's pie. I always put loads of carrots and onions in, and the topping is potato, so I don't see a need for anything else.

CurlewKate · 22/09/2024 13:20

Cabbage, broccoli or peas.

TribeofFfive · 22/09/2024 13:22

Green veg & Yorkshire puds.

Beans or spaghetti hoops with cottage pie is criminal!

Frizno · 22/09/2024 13:23

I put a lot of veg in the meat part of the pie.

Then tend to serve with broccoli or sometimes nothing.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/09/2024 13:51

Green beans with a bit of fried sliced red onion stirred through is my favourite side for both cottage and shepherd's pie

AutumnCrow · 22/09/2024 11:21

You make sandwiches or baps with the cottage pie, often with tomato sauce.

Please tell me this is a joke.

CarrotCakeandCoffee · 22/09/2024 14:18

Some kind of green veg usually. I feel like an additional side of veg just completes it, DH always would just have it on its own.

I'm on a freezer clearance mission and there are two Yorkshire puds languishing in there - I might add them 😂 as an experiment!

spikeandbuffy · 22/09/2024 14:30

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie it works! I do butter and brown sauce

It's a bit like a pasty barm minus the pastry

Not something I'll be trying! It sounds hideous - and I consider myself Northern!

KeepScrapingBy · 22/09/2024 15:08

Broccoli, green beans, buttered new potatoes.

catin8oots · 22/09/2024 15:13

I've just come back to the thread and I've never been so overwhelmed 😀😀😀

Id love a cottage pie it's rainy and cold here!

We would have ours with kale or broccoli. And gravy!

Shannith · 22/09/2024 15:22

What???? Brown sauce. Has to be. I rarely besmirch it with anything but if you put a gun to my head maybe some purple sprouting broccoli.

DD would have it with chips or rice but she's a heathen.

PiggieWig · 22/09/2024 15:23

I might do one for tea tonight. It hadn’t occurred to me that pickled beetroot or red cabbage could be northern, but I am.
