Please settle a debate 😀

I always do ours with baked beans for the kids and sketti hoops for me (none bb eater)

My mate has hers with bread and butter 😱

Either nothing, or peas/green veg, or pickled onions and red cabbage. Brown sauce or gravy 😍

Emily1583 · 22/09/2024 10:32

Baked beans. I don't like spaghetti hoops. No idea why just the texture of them.

JustKeepSwimmingJust · 22/09/2024 10:35

Pickled red cabbage and green peas. No extra stodge or wet food required.

I put peas, onion and carrots in the meat layer so I do cabbage or green beans on the side. Cabbage with beef gravy is so good!

pilates · 22/09/2024 10:40

I would never think to put baked beans or spaghetti hoops with cottage pie.

Skipsurvey · 22/09/2024 10:40

peas
or other green vegetable

I'm making cottage pie today, with truffled mash potatoes and cheese. Served with buttered cavolo nero and fine green beans.

sounds perfect

ThisBlueCrab · 22/09/2024 10:43

Veg and lots of it!

I out carrots, sweetcorn, peas in with he meat but also add additional veggies.

SantaToSSD · 22/09/2024 10:43

Mine might have carrots or another veg in it, but I would always eat it with at least one, possibly two, other fresh vegetables. And brown sauce. But then, I love vegetables and try to make them half of whatever is my main meal of the day.

okayumm · 22/09/2024 10:44

Always green beans for me. If for whatever reason they're not available I'll have broccoli. Wouldn't have peas with it as I always put peas in the pie.

Imperfectionist · 22/09/2024 10:44

Garden peas

Mustard

Anisty · 22/09/2024 10:46

Garden peas or broccoli. I'd never put baked beans on a plate next to cottage pie - bleurgggh!

Skipsurvey · 22/09/2024 10:54

spring cabbage or something similar

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 22/09/2024 10:56

Chips.

Double carbs blah blah blah but chips and cottage pie is ultimate comfort food.

Mumofyellows · 22/09/2024 10:59

Carrots kale peas leeks...some kind of veg, usually 2 or 3 different ones.

RosesAndHellebores · 22/09/2024 11:09

Green veg. I don't get the appeal of serving it with baked beans, tinned spaghetti hoops, bread and butter or chips.

One large onion, chopped
3 or 4 Carrots sliced, depending on size
Mushrooms
600 to 750g beef Mince
Tbs flour
1/2 to 3/4 pint beef stock, enriched with Worcester sauce and a bit of garlic and half a tsp mixed herbs

Usually simmer for about an hour, add mushrooms for 20 mins then cool and refrigerate overnight so it's easy to add the mash. Might make one next weekend.

Shepherds pie is made with lamb. I don't add mushrooms but do add rosemary and a cpl teaspoons of mint sauce. I use lamb stock, obviously.

Biscuitandacuppa · 22/09/2024 11:12

I make it half with cheese on the mash and half without. I have the cheesy side and add pickled red cabbage. There are peas and carrots already in the mix. My dd has the plain side with gravy and mint sauce. We are having it for tea tonight!

Cantonet · 22/09/2024 11:14

I cook up celery & carrots as well as onions & garlic with mine. Plus some tomato paste or 1/2 tin tomatoes lends some richness to the gravy. I also add a tin of lentils & lots of Bisto Best ... to spoil the healthy illusion!

Skipsurvey · 22/09/2024 11:15

i make it with beef but call it shepherds pie, i dont like lamb, we have moussaka also with beef.
or ideally both are made with lentils although dh does tend to look disappointed when he discovers!

FrostyFlo · 22/09/2024 11:15

@crumblingschools

Yes because my cottage pie is veggie and I love mint sauce .

GreenMarigold · 22/09/2024 11:16

Absolutely love any green veg with cottage or shepherds pie. I would absolutely never have baked beans, or bread and butter for that matter!

Fescue · 22/09/2024 11:16

I think you are all totally crackers. The answer the OP is looking for is a nice bottle of a Languedoc red.

Inspireme2 · 22/09/2024 11:19

Bread & butter yes.

HouseofHolbein · 22/09/2024 11:19

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 22/09/2024 10:56

Chips.

Same. Might add broccoli to it if I have some 😊

InandOutlander · 22/09/2024 11:19

Spaghetti hoops?!?!?

Who in the world looks at beef, veg and potatoes and thinks 'some pasta in tomato sauce is the perfect side'
