To hate seasonal decor

Just that really- I was watching stories on instagram and I can’t help but notice people decorate differently for different seasons- eg. Pumpkin cushions/ornaments, halloweeny props (in sebtember) Xmas yeah that I understand. Summer different colour cushion covers, even rug changes etc. Easter little ornamental decorations, daffodil door wreaths etc etc. But it’s not celebs it’s everyday people! Has this always been a thing??

It's not compulsory

If people want to and it makes them happy then each to their own, eh.

KnickerlessParsons · 20/09/2024 19:20

No, this has not always been a thing. This is clever marketing.

Until about 30 years ago people decorated for Christmas, from about a week before Christmas. And that was about it.

unsync · 20/09/2024 19:21

Same. Pointless shit which either creates clutter or goes straight to landfill.

It's instagram. Just an excuse to sell things and make money.

Pandasnacks · 20/09/2024 19:24

Plenty of people do it

Chickydoo · 20/09/2024 19:24

No idea how people find the time to even think about seasonal bits & bobs, let alone actually decorate the house with them!

HumanBurrito · 20/09/2024 19:25

Me too. Pointless toxic sweatshop landfill shite.

Isseywith3witchycats · 20/09/2024 19:25

it wasn't its USA influence coming over here when my kids were small (1980s )we did an Easter bonnet for Easter Sunday church service and kids did penny for the guy mid October to November 5th and usually a fancy dress party at the local social club (British Legion) and trick or treating one night in our own street , no fancy decorations just everyone in the street got in some extra sweets , bonfire night street bonfire and everyone bought a few fireworks and one of the dads lit them, the only time extra decorations came into the house was Christmas deccies and tree. life was a lot simpler

MotiRoller · 20/09/2024 19:26

No one is making you do it. Let people enjoy what they enjoy.

I decorate for Halloween, I make a window display with pumpkins and light up haunted houses. In winter I have Christmas tree displays in my window. In spring I have crocheted tulips and Lego wildflowers in my window and in summer sunflowers. I love decorating my bay window shelf for the seasons. It makes me happy.

Why would you chuck away ornaments and cushions?

It's not like we don't know whether there'll be another autumn next year!

BearBuggy · 20/09/2024 19:27

Growing up our house was the same except at Christmas. I change my fake plants each season but that’s about it.
Would love the time and money to be able to be seasonal though.

Omg I hate it too- autumnal decor- wtf!!! I blame the likes of b&m and schmutter influencers like Stacy Solomon who make women think they need to obsess over this crap and putting biscuits in a glass jar, and label every bloody container in their fridge.

That sounds lovely!

I always decorate for Halloween but usually only from the day before. I don't have anywhere in my house where I could do it all the time.

Lots of people store their seasonal decor in the loft, shed etc just like Christmas decor.

As with most things in life, why are you allowing people you don't know space in your head. Your first problem is instagram

Oh yeah, of course, Stacey Solomon invented biscuit jars and now 'women' can't live without it, even worse that it's GLASS jars! People are bonkers on here

I quite like seasonal craft displays. It's fun to make them and to get excited about the coming season, and I enjoy changing them throughout the year. And before anyone accuses me of waste, most of mine are Lego or other things I keep, so they get re-used year on year.

I think it's rather nice to acknowledge the changing of the seasons, especially nowadays when we're so much more detached from nature than in the past.

Have nothing in your life you don't know to be useful or believe to be beautiful. The latter is completely personal to you. What you say is shite I may call art and vice versa.

My autumn decor is currently a glass vase of conkers the kids have been collecting on their walks. In the summer it has seashells in. When we hit October I also have some pumpkins we sewed together last year and a witch I needle felted. When the kids do really lovely images which are seasonal I frame them and get them out at the right time of year. Mum does this with a picture of a snowman I did in about 1990, comes out in December.

Zero sweatshops here, and yes I imagine once we're all dead and gone some of it will end up in landfill but it'll will have been well cherished before then!

Lego is such a great idea!!!

Not really, I think the influx of Americans lifestyle programs has changed the British attitude.

I have a dd. She LOVES the different seasons had the change of decor. We put a different wreath om the door, have a change of cushion covers and the odd decoration. Nothing to ott but it's fun and it makes me smile.

Georgyporky · 20/09/2024 19:44

I don't care about the decor, but what always bothers me is the colours of clothing.
Walk into any shop at this time of year, & the colours are all the same. I'd like to wear so-called spring & summer colours all year round.

Ithinkyou · 20/09/2024 19:44

I have a friend who does it, quite subtlety, and I like it. Her house always looks beautiful and clean anyway, as does she. She's one of those organised people who is just a total mystery to me, and I love being friends with her.

My autumn decor is some unswept leaves and some extra cobwebs in the corners.

That’s not quite the point op was making. No need to be quite so defensive of your no doubt extremely tasteful Halloween crap.
