To hate seasonal decor

Just that really- I was watching stories on instagram and I can’t help but notice people decorate differently for different seasons- eg. Pumpkin cushions/ornaments, halloweeny props (in sebtember) Xmas yeah that I understand. Summer different colour cushion covers, even rug changes etc. Easter little ornamental decorations, daffodil door wreaths etc etc. But it’s not celebs it’s everyday people! Has this always been a thing??

Not really, I think the influx of Americans lifestyle programs has changed the British attitude.

I have a dd. She LOVES the different seasons had the change of decor. We put a different wreath om the door, have a change of cushion covers and the odd decoration. Nothing to ott but it's fun and it makes me smile.

I'm pretty sure I learnt it from my nan. It wasn't in shops as it is now, but she lived more seasonally. She had winter duvet covers with snowflakes on Vs summer/spring floral ones, would change the duvet too (lighter tog for summer), the warm blankets would come out of storage when the clocks changed. In the spring there was an Easter tree (very German) and daffodils, she had different table cloths for different seasons too thinking about it. In the autumn she would bring conkers in (supposedly to deter spiders), December there would be a poinsettia, then the Christmas bits but most of it was natural stuff.

No arguments that it's a lot more commercial than it was, but does feel like the general idea of bringing in the seasons goes back further than American influencers.

Can we just let women enjoy things?

NoraLuka · 20/09/2024 19:53

I wish I had seasonal decorations, in my head I can picture how nice it would be to walk through the woods gathering stuff for autumn wreaths and things. Unfortunately I can just about manage keeping the house clean and tidy so I don’t think adding decorations to the mix will help!

Do people really buy decorations and throw them away after one use? Everyone I know has a hoard of Christmas stuff going back years, some of it could probably do with being thrown away tbh.

speak for yourself. I'm Pagan, and have been decorating for Samhain for nearly 25 years. My decorations get re-used same as the xmas decs, they're out for a bit, then go away for a year.

Should i not celebrate the biggest sabbat in my religious calendar because people like you think the décor is tat?

Not everyone is christian, not everyone is decorating for 'Halloween' and its nice to be able to buy things to add to the collection, it used to be difficult and involved making most of it myself.

Do you feel the same about Divali decorations? No? Then wind your neck in.

Newgolddream70 · 20/09/2024 19:57

I'm going to get a Christmassy cushion for one of my sofas this year!

Omg I hate it too- autumnal decor- wtf!!! I blame the likes of b&m and schmutter influencers like Stacy Solomon who make women think they need to obsess over this crap and putting biscuits in a glass jar, and label every bloody container in their fridge.

Do you realise how insulting you are being? Or are you just goading? You are showing your ignorance, and that you cannot think beyond your own ideas and 'taste'. We had exactly the same thread a few weeks ago. You are not saying anything new.
We are not all mindless land fill purchasers. We keep our ornaments from year to year, we like our homes and like to decorate them. Most of my decorations are natural.
Do you live in some soulless hole? I am sorry for you if you do. Can you think beyond B and M, and Stacy Solomon or is that your horizon?

You and your ilk think you are superior, but you are not, you show your ignorance and prejudice in every post.

No, everyone has to like what they like. We're not allowed to be individuals with our own religions, taste and decorating habits.

We must all ascribe to being beige and boring joyless fun sponges all year around.

Machiavellian · 20/09/2024 20:07

It's consumerist crap. The big shops selling bargain crap are the worse. Like, people living through cost of living pressures yet oh my god look at the little cutesy pumpkins! I guess people can spend their money however they want but it's just so.... Look at me look at me! I blame Instagram.

Sunnysundayicecream · 20/09/2024 20:11

Wicca teaches about seasonality. I adore the wheel of the year and have decorated my house for years according to the seasons. We should all look to nature more.

Where do you draw the line between consumerist crap and just normal buying stuff?

We have a cutesy snowman who sits next to the Christmas tree and another one with skis that hangs in the window. Also a stained glass robin. And some of those little wooden houses which light up from inside. I guess they could all be considered tat but I love them and get them out every year and none of them have ever been on Instagram!

How is decorating your own home in a way that makes you happy 'look at me look at me'? Pretty sure other randoms can't see into my home.

Machiavellian · 20/09/2024 20:18

Christmas yes, but I resent the slow creep of consumerism into the seasons. It's blatant marketing.

suburburban · 20/09/2024 20:21

Also when people feel the pressure to do this

I like the nature idea e.g. Conkers or different blankets

Not keen on that awful white fluff stuff for Halloween that I've seen in gardens

RickiRaccoon · 20/09/2024 20:23

I only just heard of it in the last few years when an American mentioned putting their fall decor out. It's not something I'd be interested in as most of what I've seen looks quite tacky. We're lucky we've got a garden and can bring flowers in for different seasons which has the same effect, I suppose.

Firstposternailsityetagain · 20/09/2024 20:23

My autumn decor is some unswept leaves and some extra cobwebs in the corners.

@Ithinkyou

😂😂😂

Doggymummar · 20/09/2024 20:25

My neighbours are Scandinavian and they do this. I think it's lovely. It's expensive stuff not landfill.

K0OLA1D · 20/09/2024 20:27

My Halloween decs go away in December and come back out in January

It's not compulsory

justasking111 · 20/09/2024 20:28

I have two lustre glass pumpkins which look very pretty. A bouquet of autumnal leaves for a vase, and a string of leaves.

They'll go up this weekend the official for me onset of autumn. I use them every year.

My American friend has just done hers some of the glass ornaments and lamps were her late mothers.

My granny changed the sitting room curtains and draught curtains were put up at the front door and the sitting room door. Her winter eiderdowns were beautiful and so cosy. No duvets back then.

Pandasnacks · 20/09/2024 19:31

Oh yeah, of course, Stacey Solomon invented biscuit jars and now 'women' can't live without it, even worse that it's GLASS jars! People are bonkers on here

Biscuit jars used to be for storing biscuits- now they have to be asthetically pleasing and layered in a kardashian esque way. People take washing pods out of one container and put in another with a label incase they are too thick to realise it’s a washing tablet

Crymeastream564 · 20/09/2024 20:31

I just think it’s terribly extravagant and impractical! I mean who buys a Christmas duvet cover that you only use for a week or two at most and then have to store it for the other eleven months of the year?

A family member bought me a Christmas table cloth and tea towels and they are the bane of my life honestly bc I feel I have to have them laundered and ironed for when they come to stay and they are always in the airing cupboard for the rest of the year staring at me! 😃😃 I don’t even like them that much tbh!

ThomasPatrickKeatingsDegas · 20/09/2024 20:33

You'll hate my home OP, I decorate for every holiday. Between my toddler daughter and I over the past 20 months we have had 5 major surgeries with two more to go, life can be joyless and tough for some and some festive cheer helps both of us.

Outnumberedmummy2022 · 20/09/2024 20:34

Oh yes! I’m going to notice this everywhere now 🙄

The layered biscuit jars make me nervous 😬
