To hate seasonal decor

Just that really- I was watching stories on instagram and I can’t help but notice people decorate differently for different seasons- eg. Pumpkin cushions/ornaments, halloweeny props (in sebtember) Xmas yeah that I understand. Summer different colour cushion covers, even rug changes etc. Easter little ornamental decorations, daffodil door wreaths etc etc. But it’s not celebs it’s everyday people! Has this always been a thing??

Are we only allowed to start threads that fawn over stuff then @StarSlinger

Maybe if other people could dial down their 'rage' and maybe act like adults who understand that others have different likes and opinions, this place would be a lot nicer.

gardenmusic · 20/09/2024 22:18

Why start a thread to make people feel like shit?

Exactly!
By all means, dislike autumn decor, feel free to say so. but stop denegrating other women for their choices

There;s opinions and there's starting threads that you know will piss people off. But if that's your thing then crack on.

I don’t decorate for autumn but I love watching some YouTubers who do, I find the videos very relaxing and calming to watch and some of the houses are just gorgeous, their homes look very warm and welcoming.

Why read a thread titled "to hate seasonal decor" if you seasonally decorate?

Just scroll past.

The OP didn't lure anyone in, the title was clear enough to me.

DillDanding · 20/09/2024 22:25

It’s Americana.

We have a holiday home in the US and it’s definitely been a thing over there for as long as we have been there.

Just like other American things we perceive as naff/tasteless/crass - they eventually come to the UK. See bridal showers, baby showers, sip’n’sees, ‘holiday’ decorating and celebrating for occasions that aren’t even holidays (like valentine’s or Halloween)…Our house will be the only one currently not decked out with pumpkins, ghosts, skeletons etc.

My nephew (UK) is getting married soon and we have a rehearsal dinner the night before. Another US thing that’s coming here.

Intsagram and TikTok have just made it more homogeneous.

But it doesn't piss everyone off.
Some people do hate seasonal decor.
Some people don't

Some enjoy the scrap about it

Maybe if other people could dial down their 'rage' and maybe act like adults who understand that others have different likes and opinions, this place would be a lot nicer.

And maybe if posters had the intelligence and courtesy to merely state their opinions, and not criticise and denegrate other women for their choices they would not instigate rage. I will never dial down my rage against bullying.

SunsetSkylane · 20/09/2024 22:26

No but genuinely who would have guessed that 'I'm not keen on pumpkin candles from Home Bargains' would instigate such ire?

I don't think the OP is to blame here; people have agency and can either scroll past or, you know, rein themselves in a bit. What's the opinion of a stranger to anyone else?

Rage bait, trolling, goading. Fucking give over.

Same. Pointless shit which either creates clutter or goes straight to landfill.

I don't do it myself but if it's being used year after year it's not going straight into landfill. I always think that about Christmas 'tat'. I caved and bought a Christmas tablecloth last year but I'll probably use it for the next twenty years.

gardenmusic · 20/09/2024 22:26

Some are just goads.

SunsetSkylane · 20/09/2024 22:27

Bullying 😂😂😂

The hysteria on this thread is sort of fascinating. You're all getting more annoyed as the evening goes on, and the rest of us are just agog.

What is wrong with you?
Your blood pressure must be off the scale, seriously - calm down.

SweetPea201 · 20/09/2024 22:32

You would love the little Halloween item I bought in primark earlier 😂 a little mummy sat in a pumpkin with dangly legs 😂 some would say tat but I thought he was cute and I will smile every time I see him on my shelf during October 😂😃

i don't really decorate for the seasons except Christmas, I do really like the feel of autumn so I might be persuaded to get the odd bit! maybe a pumpkin throw will be my next purchase 😂

I wish I could be more crafty and make some pieces for each season instead, just never seem to get round to it!

I quite like seasonal craft displays. It's fun to make them and to get excited about the coming season, and I enjoy changing them throughout the year. And before anyone accuses me of waste, most of mine are Lego or other things I keep, so they get re-used year on year.

I think it's rather nice to acknowledge the changing of the seasons, especially nowadays when we're so much more detached from nature than in the past.

This is spot on.

Me and my DD are decorating our front window with Autumn bits tomorrow.

It's my favourite season and we'll do some crafts, collect conkers ect. We plan to do some baking too, to celebrate the Autumn Equinox this weekend.

Not for everyone but for us it will be a lovely thing to do as a family.

gardenmusic · 20/09/2024 22:33

Well, yes. You do need a goad to begin it. You are quite right. Goads must be very bored. I always wonder if they are actually just popping over from the incel boards.

Have nothing in your life you don't know to be useful or believe to be beautiful. The latter is completely personal to you. What you say is shite I may call art and vice versa.

My autumn decor is currently a glass vase of conkers the kids have been collecting on their walks. In the summer it has seashells in. When we hit October I also have some pumpkins we sewed together last year and a witch I needle felted. When the kids do really lovely images which are seasonal I frame them and get them out at the right time of year. Mum does this with a picture of a snowman I did in about 1990, comes out in December.

Zero sweatshops here, and yes I imagine once we're all dead and gone some of it will end up in landfill but it'll will have been well cherished before then!

Everything you decorate with is either natural or things you have made. None of it is harming the planet.

Perhaps the point the pp was making was that a lot of this seasonal decoration stuff is made from plastic in China, shipped all the way round the world and, by its very cheap and flimsy nature, is thrown away after a couple of years.

Goads = women (?) denegrating other women for their choices, trying to make them feel bad about how they spend their time and money.

Who throws it all away? We have bought a few things, but actually most if our seasonal decorations have been craft projects I have done with the children. I suppose they might seem like tat, but I love that every year we revisit happy memories of making things, as well as add a bit more to the collection.

We are doing leaf paintings with the first falling leaves now, but will get less autumnal and more halloweeny as the month goes on, before we go all out spooky for October.

It is not pointless when it brings joy!

I decorate for Halloween, I make a window display with pumpkins and light up haunted houses. In winter I have Christmas tree displays in my window. In spring I have crocheted tulips and Lego wildflowers in my window and in summer sunflowers. I love decorating my bay window shelf for the seasons. It makes me happy.

That's so lovely. I had a neighbour who had a little window ledge and she would always put seasonal displays on, just tiny little things but so sweet and uplifting as you walked past. She's moved and the shelf is always empty now which makes me a bit sad.
