To hate seasonal decor

Just that really- I was watching stories on instagram and I can’t help but notice people decorate differently for different seasons- eg. Pumpkin cushions/ornaments, halloweeny props (in sebtember) Xmas yeah that I understand. Summer different colour cushion covers, even rug changes etc. Easter little ornamental decorations, daffodil door wreaths etc etc. But it’s not celebs it’s everyday people! Has this always been a thing??

I made my Christmas table cloth and napkins. Have runner for the table. Had them for decades.

Also when people feel the pressure to do this

I like the nature idea e.g. Conkers or different blankets

Not keen on that awful white fluff stuff for Halloween that I've seen in gardens

Or the plastic stick on bats everywhere

@OnlyFoolsnMothers what have biscuit jars got to do with kardashians? And what have washing tablets got to do with seasonal decor?

I do it. But it's not going to landfill...it's in my loft and I rotate it. Pleases me and is better than redecorating every 2 minutes. I know someone who gets a new car or kitchen every 3 years. My little porcelain pumpkin and string of acorn fairy lights is nothing 🎃

I love marking the changing of the seasons - like PPs I celebrate the Wheel Of The Year and decorating is part of that for me. Not everything “seasonal” has to be plastic consumerist tat; and not everyone who decorates for the seasons is shallow and Insta-obsessed. This Sunday - Mabon - I’ll be putting out squashes that will then go into soup etc; leaves and berries from the nearby hedges that then get composted; and felted garlands that get carefully wrapped and put away after Samhain.

This sounds lovely! Thanks for reminding me to check my wheel/almanac!

Xmas I understand and totally get. And your table cloth and napkins sound lovely and a nice tradition. It’s more the b&m generic tat everyone had the same of I mean

I think it looks nice. 😐

I decorate for autumn by piling coats in exciting seasonal colours like black and black onto the jewel post at the bottom of the stairs and my dc scatter woolly hats and inside-outed gloves across the floor like fallen leaves.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 20/09/2024 20:40

You would hate the autumn lights I bought today in Poundland, OP.

I mean all the plastic tat from b&m and home bargains. Man I’m getting grumpy in my old age 😂

No one is making you do it. Let people enjoy what they enjoy.

I didn’t say people shouldn’t enjoy it. I said I don’t.

I change for the seasons.

I like warmer colours in autumn and lighter in spring/summer. Only change the cushions and some greenery.

Decorate for Halloween for the kids because they like it.

Decorate elaborately at Christmas for me because I love it.

I don't have Instagram or Facebook and nobody except my family and friends ever see it.

I rarely go into shops other than the supermarket but it is definitely a growing trend!! Can see how it would grate on you if it's largely poorly manufactured cheap stuff which doesn't look like it'd make it till December let alone last years.

However I can't be upset that autumn is at least getting a bit of a look in. I feel like for years we went straight from swim suits to Santa hats in the shops and I was the only one saying theres an entire season in between!!!

No, just bloody rude.

Can we just let women enjoy things?

What have women got to do with this?

it’s really not that kinda argument- sorry.

me Having an opinion that differs from yours is rude? Okay then.

id say plastic stick on bats for 99p- not reusable is classed as cheap tat. If your opinion differs, no problem. I’d never class that as rude 😉

I've done Xmas Halloween and Easter for 20 years this year.
I love it. My dc love it . I'll probably always do it.

I do autumn now too well for the last 8 years I guess. Feels cosy.

Makes me happy. Makes my kids happy .

SweatySpaghetti · 20/09/2024 20:53

Love decorating for Christmas, but apart from that- no I don’t get the trend for decorating for all seasons. I don’t have the time, or the money to be honest!

Candyfluffs · 20/09/2024 20:53

It’s just a combination of clever advertising, availability of cheap tat and also changing traditions.

I think why not! Life is hard and it’s nice to celebrate the changing seasons. I expect fewer people attend harvest festivals now and more people are into Halloween.

Personally Halloween is amazing these days. Everyone in the neighbourhood puts on a fabulous display and all the kids get dressed up….it brings a real party vibe and sense of excitement to our area, the kids love it and it brings the community together as we are all so busy living our own lives we don’t get many other opportunities to meet all the extended neighbours.

SuePreemly · 20/09/2024 19:19

It's not compulsory

If people want to and it makes them happy then each to their own, eh.

Never implied it was compulsory, nor did I say it shouldn’t make people happy. I’m stating how I don’t personally like it

Decorations like this are very common in Germany and Scandinavia. I’m German and have seasonal decorations which are 50 years old. The reason it’s becoming more common in the UK is that, due to German/Scandi cultural influences and ancestry, seasonal decoration is very common in the USA and this is then reaching the UK via the internet. Of course, capitalism means that everything has to be made out of plastic and shipped from China, but that’s consumerism rather than the tradition of decorating seasonally, so…

Rude and goady. You know that though, because you cannot possibly be that ignorant. You have to resurect an old thread because you have too little to think about . I am done with you, because I cannot argue with your stupidity.
