Just that really- I was watching stories on instagram and I can’t help but notice people decorate differently for different seasons- eg. Pumpkin cushions/ornaments, halloweeny props (in sebtember) Xmas yeah that I understand. Summer different colour cushion covers, even rug changes etc. Easter little ornamental decorations, daffodil door wreaths etc etc. But it’s not celebs it’s everyday people! Has this always been a thing??

Or, are the people who had fond memories of their seasonally decorated primary classrooms all grown up and working as influencers now. Soon we'll all have chalk Fireworks pictures on black sugar paper displayed on the wall, and name labels by our coat pegs in the hall. Comfy vibes!

Who has the time and money for it? I think it's another thing women get foisted on them, who can honestly be arsed.

And again! FFS allow us to be the judge of how we spend our time and money.
If you like doing it, it's not about being arsed, it's enjoyable. Nobody has 'autumn decor' foisted upon them.
Would you and your cohorts kindly stop talking about women as if they are mindless morons following the herd.

I decorate for autumn by piling coats in exciting seasonal colours like black and black onto the jewel post at the bottom of the stairs and my dc scatter woolly hats and inside-outed gloves across the floor like fallen leaves.

We do this
With muddy dying grass football boots added in to "bring the outside indoors" affect. It's very pretty!

Yes this! For me it’s the storage. Where are people putting all these things??

Some of us have big houses.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 20/09/2024 21:38

I don’t do it because I’ve seen it on social media. I hardly look at that sort of thing. Admittedly, things have caught my eye in adverts or when I’ve looked at a website and that’s why I’ve bought my cushion covers and bedding.

I only do it for autumn and Christmas though I don’t knock anyone who wants to do it year round.

I do love seasonal changes but to me that's a certain colour throw, a seasonal bouquet on the table, a nice wreath for Winter. I don't really do the seasonal tacky decor as such but I do love changing my colours for the seasons.

SuffolkBargeWoman · 20/09/2024 21:43

@gardenmusic are you alright dear?
You seem incredibly exercised about this!

Lovelysummerdays · 20/09/2024 21:43

I don’t decorate normally but I just bought a pumpkin shaped cushion from Aldi. It’s actually quite a nice brown rather than orange and I have no other excuses.

If it helps I’m highly unfashionable and only ever get on a bandwagon when everyone else is getting off so it’ll fizzle out any minute!

Oh don't be daft. If you are not into discussion don't spend time on discussion boards.

Most of my house is full of kids’ crap and stuff from DH’s hobbies. Decorating for the seasons is one of the few things that makes me feel like I also live here. Def not foisted on me by anyone - influencers or otherwise.

If they bring the outdoors indoors in its full pretty then yes they do.

frozendaisy · 20/09/2024 21:57

Do men do this?
Just out of interest.
Personally I can't think of one man I know who lives in a home without a female who decorates for autumn.

SunsetSkylane · 20/09/2024 21:57

Rage bait??

Anyone who finds themselves baited into rage by a discussion about decor needs to get a fucking grip, frankly.

Why the hell is raging? Seriously?!

HalfaCider · 20/09/2024 22:02

I started with a few seasonal pieces when my DC were small, to help teach them about seasons. Tiny jugs of snowdrops, an Easter tree (birch twigs in a jar with homemade egg decorations), a real pumpkin display on the dining table etc. Over time they have come to love the changes in the house to signify time of year and beg me to put bits and bobs out. Most is quite natural, but I do have some glass pumpkin lights and collect vintage crockery. It's not tacky and is not done to show off. It is one of my hobbies. People might enjoy running or knitting; I enjoy making my home full of warmth and cosy for my family. Of course shops have seen the huge potential, but I decorate because it brings me joy, not because I'm a moron taken in by marketing. I find time for it, just like anyone makes time for hobbies.

Anyone who finds themselves baited into rage by a discussion about decor needs to get a fucking grip, frankly.

Anyone who gets their knickers knotted about what other people choose to do in their own homes needs to get more than one fucking grip.

StarSlinger · 20/09/2024 22:04

Maybe if the seasonal decor was bought from John Lewis that would be okay?

SunsetSkylane · 20/09/2024 22:06

Literally the OP basically said she doesn't like it @StarSlinger

If we're not allowed to discuss our likes and dislikes without generating 'rage' then what's even the point any more.

Well yes, I am disturbed by this thread, just as much as the last, very similar thread (a couple of weeks ago) which also annoyed me.
It's not really about the decor, it's about women (?) posting and denegrating other women for their choices.
Telling other women that their choices must be led by celebrities or instagram, presuming that their decor must be cheap and tacky and destined for landfill.
The inference that they are mindless morons pulled in by marketing.
The presumption that they are somehow superior to a woman who wishes to purchase something that she likes for her home.
There are a lot of women on here who have very little of their own, and little confidence. Having their choices denegrated by some tosser is the last thing they need. Now me, I am just angry that some random thinks I fill my house with tat.
Would you walk into your friend's house and start ranting and 'grumbling' because she has treated herself to a new autumnal cushion?
Would you be so rude?

Of course, they could just be goading to get a response.

The OP knew fine well what would happen if they started this thread. I cba to decorate for autumn. I'm not a snuggly under a blanket with 'hot choc' type. In fact I bloody hate the end of summer. But if people want to decorate for Autumn it makes no difference to my life. Why start a thread to make people feel like shit?

SunsetSkylane · 20/09/2024 22:14

That's a pointless analogy; no you wouldn't slag off a friends home to her face, but you might think 'that's not for me' and go home and say it to your husband, for example.

And that's ok.

Absolutely baffled by the level of anger that's apparently just ready to be tapped into over the very mildest topic of conversation.

frozendaisy · 20/09/2024 22:14

I get what the OP is about.

And I don't get it either.

I understand people mark the seasons, but the world is burning and drowning literally and figuratively in over/mass consumption. And whilst some can pick garden flowers and have conker jars it just feeds into a psyche that some might think I need something as well, this is a thing, our house will look uncared for, the kids will ask why we haven't got autumn decorations, but you work, you didn't keep last year's conkers, so you buy some autumn things, because you are pressured into it.

We're not wicca nature enough and everyone is aware nature is good for us. Yet nature is what is being destroyed for mass consumption.

Microplastics are in our brains now. Lodged there forever, new development, no escape now, doesn't matter how much you try to avoid plastic and keep it natural, the water we drink the air we breathe, we have got to the stage microplastics are in our brains, clearly the long term effects on us and our children are unknown.

So my view feeding the monster of more decorating, consumption and this is contributed to by natural decorations is, to me, utter insanity. But perhaps that just the effect of a microplastic brain, who knows?

Redbsllots · 20/09/2024 22:15

I prefer to decorate for autumn than Christmas actually. At least I don’t have to have a fucking tree 🎃🎄
