To hate seasonal decor

Just that really- I was watching stories on instagram and I can’t help but notice people decorate differently for different seasons- eg. Pumpkin cushions/ornaments, halloweeny props (in sebtember) Xmas yeah that I understand. Summer different colour cushion covers, even rug changes etc. Easter little ornamental decorations, daffodil door wreaths etc etc. But it’s not celebs it’s everyday people! Has this always been a thing??

i get that it isn't for everyone, i get that people aren't going to like it, but what i don't get is why there has to be so much "its tat" or "it's just landfill fodder" or "who only uses bedspreads/cushions for a few weeks of the year" like most of them don't decorate for xmas?

My point in my post earlier is that not everyone is white british christian, some are from other cultures and other religions who've bought their own traditions and habits.

Yes there are people who buy 'tat' from B&M/Home Bargains, but there are a lot of us on this thread, and the other one, who are telling you that a lot of us who change decor for the seasons aren't doing this, this is something we do for other reasons and it brings us pleasure.

Don't like it? No problem, but why try and bring those of us who DO enjoy it down ?

SunsetSkylane · 21/09/2024 11:29

Why is saying you don't like something 'trying to bring others down'? It's just someone expressing an opinion; if you feel offended by it that's on you, not them.

If we're not allowed to express the very mildest of opinions then the concept of discussion boards is dead.

LonginesPrime · 21/09/2024 11:30

There are a lot of women on here who have very little of their own, and little confidence. Having their choices denegrated by some tosser is the last thing they need.

I love the seasonal decor thing, as I said upthread.

However, I don't think OP is BU to have a different opinion, and I don't think her OP was nasty or intended to belittle other people - it sounds like perhaps you have conflated OP's opinion with other people online who might criticise seasonal displays in a mean way.

Also, I think if one is posting one's home decor on SM, it's reasonable to assume that people might have, and express, opinions on it - I don't think the people who choose to share their decor with strangers on social media are these delicate shrinking violets you imagine.

Now me, I am just angry that some random thinks I fill my house with tat.

Why does it matter what some random thinks? One of my favourite sayings is "what other people think about me is none of my business".

It's pretty obvious that different people have different tastes, so it should also be obvious that not everyone is going to be a fan of the way you decorate your house. But you live there, not them, so their opinion shouldn't matter.

Lia Leendertz publishes an almanac every year, the 2025 one has just come out. Otherwise you can google “Wheel Of The Year” or have a look on Pinterest (which is prob also loathed by the autumn refuseniks 😉) and there’s lots of sustainable, thoughtful, quiet ways to mark the changing of the seasons!

Lovely, thanks! The book looks great. I’ll get googling for wheels 🙏

Firstposternailsityetagain · 21/09/2024 07:30

I think someone else replied already, but my almanac was from a local bookshop (also available on Amazon...it's the one the pp listed. I think I'd like a more general wheel of the year as well rather than an annual. It's been lovely this year. Just a reminder to notice the passing of the seasons, changing of light, what that feels like. It's the first time in a while I haven't gone 'how is it September already?!' which I think comes from approaching life more mindfully!

Thank you. Yes, this is why I want to do it! My life is zipping by so fast it’s scary.

justasking111 · 21/09/2024 12:14

My DIL would love a wheel of the year. She and the children love arts and crafts and mark the seasons. Sounds like a good Xmas present for her.

Etsy have some beautiful ones. I got a handcarved one from there a few years back, and the quality is gorgeous!

There really are. We live on the coast of Wales many beaches but with a surfeit of woodland. They tromp around at weekends.

Gatekeeper · 21/09/2024 12:51

I do a display each Autumn but it is all natural. Conkers on the mantel...some still in their outers, japanese quince as they smell wonderful, hop garland (my own hops) teasels and wheat in a vase. Maybe a few branches of hawthorn and larch.
Everything gets composted mid December when I start Christmas decorations

That sounds lovely. Very bucolic, and a world away from plastic pumpkins,

Love all the MN posters justify their Halloween habit by saying oh it’s ok, it was my great grannies 100 year old tablecloth.

I think the OP mean the literal tonnes of plastic tat sold in shops like B&M.

I hate it and think it’s awful for the planet on one hand but on the other secretly love it as have a side hustle renting out containers that people pay a fortune for to store all their plastic tat in that they can’t store in their house!

Noone has to justify their Halloween habit. We are celebrating our culture and disliking the snotty tone of people dismissing it as some American import centred on buying tat. The op specifically mentioned seasonal decorations, cushion covers , rugs, door wreaths, all things that people have done for years, as evidenced by the responses.

If plastic tat is the issue, the op should have mentioned plastic tat in the op and not made a post that dismisses the cultural heritage of others.

FriYayyy · 21/09/2024 16:24

"I prefer to decorate for autumn than Christmas actually. At least I don’t have to have a fucking tree 🎃🎄"

I've got an autumn tree 🤣🤣

ThirstyThursday · 21/09/2024 09:17

@frozendaisy necause it looks nicer on the shelf in the utility than a cardboard box or plastic garish box/bag

Come on, it's not difficult!!

ps: no skin in the game - no glass jar, no shelf, no utility room anymore...

I think it's part of the same instragram nonsense of creating still life displays in your fridge, including framed photographs, INSIDE A FRIDGE.

And getting people to fret about every nook and cranny in their house because that sells stuff.

It's utter insanity.

Everyone tells themselves, it's looks nice, it does no harm, it's just for me, but let me share a photo of it.

Framed photographs in fridges! I know someone will come along and say their gran had a photograph in their fridge it's nothing new.

Taking things out of one package and putting into another, ok fine, but arranging laundry pods in a glass jar is insanity.

Ithinkyou · 20/09/2024 19:44

I have a friend who does it, quite subtlety, and I like it. Her house always looks beautiful and clean anyway, as does she. She's one of those organised people who is just a total mystery to me, and I love being friends with her.

My autumn decor is some unswept leaves and some extra cobwebs in the corners.

That's me. I like the natural look.😃 The only Halloween things we do are displaying some little squashes and pumpkins that we grow on the allotment every year. Then we eat them.

I enjoy seeing other people's decorations though.

@frozendaisy you're WRONG.

ok it's clearly, obviously, beyond your comprehension that some of us decorate our homes because we like to acknowledge the change in seasons or celebrate an event.

im sorry you don't understand doing things for yourself that make you happy.

I don't use use Instagram or any other SM not even FB.

There's absolutely no where I post photos.

I haven't even heard of people putting photos in their fridge. Sounds properly weird to me, but completely harmless.

i can't see the problem with people decanting laundry pods into glass jars instead of having the garish boxes/bags on a shelf in the utility.

but as I said earlier, I currently don't have either a shelf or a utility room so my pods sit in their garish boxes under a cabinet. missing its plinth. I'm going to miss that storage when the kitchen gets replaced.

themakingof · 23/09/2024 17:08

My mum would re-decorate the house to reflect the seasons. We all had seasonal wardrobes, so I didn't find it strange. Probably was unusual for the time though. This was all pre-web so definitely not influenced.

frozendaisy · 23/09/2024 17:18

@ThirstyThursday it's not completely harmless.

It might be for you.

But these trends are not completely harmless for many.

My cat chews the plastic pack my pods come in. So they go in a glass spaghetti jar.

It's insanity that you think this much about what others do with their washing pods.

Pickingmyselfup · 23/09/2024 17:38

I love seasonal decor but I don't have the time or energy to swap things over 4 times a year. At the most I might get a more seasonal wax melt out for upstairs and put a darker colour cover on the bed.

A lot of these decors are reused every year so it's no different to getting your Christmas tree down every year. If it brings people joy then go for it, I would love to do it but by the time I got round to it the season would be over.

Keep them in the cupboard?! They’re hardly a display item.

There isn't room in my cupboard. That's full of cat food. I can't leave that out either.

Why does this bother people so much 🙄
