To hate seasonal decor

Just that really- I was watching stories on instagram and I can’t help but notice people decorate differently for different seasons- eg. Pumpkin cushions/ornaments, halloweeny props (in sebtember) Xmas yeah that I understand. Summer different colour cushion covers, even rug changes etc. Easter little ornamental decorations, daffodil door wreaths etc etc. But it’s not celebs it’s everyday people! Has this always been a thing??

Well my rice and pasta go in big glass jars and have done for decades. My tea bags go in a pretty tin. My biscuits go in a tin. All go in cupboards, none are labelled.

I have found plastic boxes in the fridge are useful because OH can't comprehend that you're not to put cooked meats, cheese in with dripping raw meat. I'm forever moving stuff around he mis files. 🙄

Noone has to justify their Halloween habit. We are celebrating our culture and disliking the snotty tone of people dismissing it as some American import centred on buying tat. The op specifically mentioned seasonal decorations, cushion covers , rugs, door wreaths, all things that people have done for years, as evidenced by the responses.

If plastic tat is the issue, the op should have mentioned plastic tat in the op and not made a post that dismisses the cultural heritage of others.

Well said!

I grew up in Scandinavia, my DM always changed the curtains in the spring for a lighter summer fabric ones. Table covers were also changed. All the padded winter coats were packed away too, you wouldn’t catch a padded coat on anyone’s hallway come June.

We also always decorated birch tree sticks with feathers and colourful tissue paper and placed them in a big vase at Easter. As well as painted empty eggshells which were displayed in a bowl.

At mid-summer you’d place big, big silver birch branches on either side of your front door. As well as collecting seven different type of meadow flowers and placing them under your pillow to see your future husband in your dreams that night.

All standard stuff in the 80’s!

So much of what is derided as "American" comes from Scandinavian (and also German) customs the settlers brought with them.

What bothers me is the constant "making house" things must suit seasons and be effortlessly beautiful, consumer nonsense that has increased since everyone can share decent photos online.

Which means more spend to attempt to keep up with these nonsense trends. And it's aimed at women, so if you don't do it it's another thing to add to the list of things to feel inadequate about.

Without adding in the fact that shops are now full of Easter fairy lights, halloween egg cups, pumpkin cushions it's endless, disposable crap. But some think this is a bit low brow so explain they whittle their own hazel witches but it all feeds into the same thing.

There is a mental health crisis not helped in the slightest by social media, there is a climate crisis not helped by mass consumption. These things bother me. And arranging washing pods in glass jars is part of the food for these monsters.

I'd never arrange biscuits artistically because OH would notice if one was missing. Now in a packet or a biscuit tin he can never be sure. Weirdly he inhales packets of biscuits whereas I enjoy the odd couple of biscuits with a cup of tea.

I love seasonal decorations! I don’t do them myself (except I am partial to an autumnal flower arrangement) but love walking around Hampstead Village during Halloween/autumn and seeing all the decor. I think if it’s done tastefully, like real pumpkins and autumn berries and branches or pretty bare branch with eggs on ribbons for Easter then it’s really lovely, a way to celebrate the seasons.

Definitely not when it’s plastic tat though.

My granny always swapped her curtains in spring and autumn. I love to decorate for Christmas. We always have decs up for all of December. It takes a good two days to set it all up. Every piece is stored carefully for next year. I can see why people like decorating for the seasons.

Thanks to this thread I have wasted some happy time this evening looking at felted autumn decorations on Etsy!

OP I get what you mean about the plastic tat, though.

This is more my level of effort - (minus the door wreath) until the slugs attack the pumpkin overnight.

Ooooh. Knowledge. I will try this. (Although not sure the Council will want vaseline in their food waste bin. Hmmm).
