Husband isn't happy I have booked a weekend in Blackpool...

Next weekend he said he fancied going away in the UK for two nights.
I asked him where he fancied and he's words were "I don't care ,just a nice break with you "
We haven't been away since July when we went to Cyprus so thought a little trip was a nice idea.
I looked at Edinburgh and hotels were so overpriced
Found a b&b in Blackpool for £130 for two nights with breakfast.
Reviews said it was nice.
Obviously it's a no frills b&b but I don't care.

I used to go to Blackpool every year with my mum and she passed away when I was 13 (now I'm 30) and honestly it was the place with all my happy memories.
I know the back is run down now but I thought it would be nice.
I found a couple of nice bars -bloom bar and beach club or beach bar.

Anyway told husband and he isn't happy
He said he didn't mind ...then I book and he's miserable

Is it that bad now ?
I just thought a couple of cheesy days
Maybe do madam tuzaards, the tower etc
I just want to go to remember my mum too, walk past the hotel we used to stay at.
It's still open

@GutsyPoet we used to go to Stanley park every holiday
There used to be boats for hire
We loved that

Looks like there still are, I don't know how seasonal

Walked through Stanley park yesterday! Still nice but the lakes a bit green.
Stopping at kendal is nice, could go to Grasmere gingerbread shop, well worth a visit, you'd thank me for it honest. Best gingerbread in the quaintest shop ever. Come off at Shap and head south

Blackpool is a bit marmite, I’d be pretty unimpressed at a romantic weekend there. My recent knowledge is mainly from four in a bed as I’ve not been for nearly 30 years but I’ll guess at a small room, well used mattress and an en-suite that’s been squeezed in and questionable cleaning.

I did have a lovely catch up weekend recently in Dundee of all places, lots of new, inexpensive hotels have sprung up round the train station / new V&A/ the waterfront redevelopment. Some decent bars/ good food. I’d recommend actually.

It is Marmite, but so is the Old Trafford tour and football related trip that DH previously arranged for them. Speaking as someone who's been to both! I do think if one partner gets to indulge their pretty specific tastes in couples breaks, they shouldn't really be complaining if the other wants the same.

Have you asked him why he got to choose a football themed mini break when you don't even like it, but it's a problem when roles are reversed?

ringsingling · 17/09/2024 18:13

@OrdsallChord he is Man U obsessed
It was his birthday and I asked what he fancied and that was his choice that year -the rugby wasn't a birthday tho

I grew up there. The sunset is nice. The fresh breeze is nice. I miss both of those things daily.
However, despite its best efforts over the years, any big road going east is the best thing about Blackpool

There's some nice small roads heading east also.

Tebay pies are well worth a detour tbh.

Marmite.... that's lovely, no one ever said that about Blackpool 😂, it sounds like a nice couple of days away really.

' I just want to go back one last time and get that same feeling '

you are very young to be thinking that, you could easily have another 50 years to go back.

As it means so much to you regarding memories of your mother, why don't you go on a significant date i.e. what would have been your mother's 60th birthday, or the 20 year anniversary of her death.

Last time we were in Blackpool we saw a shoplifter running down a street chased by security and a guy dancing in the street with a half bottle of whisky. There was the lovely agreesive beggar selling bracelets as we was autistic(?)

Not to mention that there probably aee more XL bullies per head of population than the rest of the country.

Run down is being kind........

Pyjamatimenow · 17/09/2024 18:29

We live in Lytham and can confirm
Blackpool is a dump. I only take the kids very very occasionally. Ribby hall is a good shout. Nice bars and restaurants in Lytham and St Anne’s. Even Poulton which is one stop away on the train has a few quite nice restaurants and bars

Well as he wasn't bothered I didn't think he would mind tbh
I've had loads of little trips with him just for him
He has had me doing the Man U stadium tour and staying in hotel football class of 92 (I think ) room when I don't like football
Went to London to see a rugby match (no clue what was happening )

I like to think it's a compromise 🤣

Oh well in that case he's getting what's coming to him! Honestly - can the two of you not actually talk and agree on places you'd both like?!

SecondaryPlans · 17/09/2024 18:39

Well seems like you’ve earnt having your choice of holiday after putting up with his choices!

If you’re feeling generous, you could find out when would be the last possible time to cancel and tell him he can organise a different weekend if he does it before then… Pretty sure he won’t bother, but then he can’t complain! Can’t stand people who can’t be bothered to do the leg work but then feel free to criticise.

I think going back would end up ruining it for you.

Keep your memories of it nice - go somewhere else.

Well the Alice In wonderland ride is still there👍 although probably cost you about £60 to both get on it

Blackpool is grim. Cancel. The hotel you visited as a kid will not be the same any more. Chester, Bath? Book theatre/cinema. And check out museums etc if the weather’s poor. You will have a better time.
