Husband isn't happy I have booked a weekend in Blackpool...

Next weekend he said he fancied going away in the UK for two nights.
I asked him where he fancied and he's words were "I don't care ,just a nice break with you "
We haven't been away since July when we went to Cyprus so thought a little trip was a nice idea.
I looked at Edinburgh and hotels were so overpriced
Found a b&b in Blackpool for £130 for two nights with breakfast.
Reviews said it was nice.
Obviously it's a no frills b&b but I don't care.

I used to go to Blackpool every year with my mum and she passed away when I was 13 (now I'm 30) and honestly it was the place with all my happy memories.
I know the back is run down now but I thought it would be nice.
I found a couple of nice bars -bloom bar and beach club or beach bar.

Anyway told husband and he isn't happy
He said he didn't mind ...then I book and he's miserable

Is it that bad now ?
I just thought a couple of cheesy days
Maybe do madam tuzaards, the tower etc
I just want to go to remember my mum too, walk past the hotel we used to stay at.
It's still open

@desperatedaysareover I want to know more about these WTF Destinations, please. My ILs have form for this - they've previous had weekends away in Kidderminster, Chesterfield, and Telford. Weird humans.

Are they better worse than Middlesborough, Lockerbie and Barrow-in-Furness? I do feel better knowing that it's not just him, for a while I wondered was he trying to drive me to suicide or if it was just the lure of a budget room for £39😝

(I don't want to offend the residents of these places, no doubt they have lots of good stuff about them and some of them were/are in nice countryside (I don't exactly come from a dazzling Shangri-La of tourism myself)

I agree with @YouveGotAFastCar

Blackpool is a rundown shit-hole. For you, that might not end up mattering at all because your happy memories will make it cheesy and kitsch. But your DP has just ended up with a weekend away in a rundown shit-hole.

This is a horrible comment

imverynosey · 17/09/2024 16:28

Wow can't believe how horrible people are being. I understand and so should your husband. After all he literally said it was up to you! X

Is it mean to state a fact? Or just stating a fact?

Limth · 17/09/2024 16:29

@desperatedaysareover Oh, you've just reminded me that my ILs also went to Lockerbie.
I wouldn't mind but they live in the Cotswolds so have loads of beautiful places close by for a weekend away.
But they go to these weird, desolate towns for breaks and then just wander around chain shops (B&M) and go to chain restaurants (Wetherspoons) that they have at home. Just why?!

Sidebeforeself · 17/09/2024 16:32

@Leah5678 Hit the beach in September?!

Therealjudgejudy · 17/09/2024 16:33

A no frills b&b in Blackpool sounds like my idea of hell.

Sorry op...

Yes? It's nice and warm out there rn make the most of it before winter

Sidebeforeself · 17/09/2024 16:43

Not reliably warm though?

Meh it's been a crappy summer it wasn't reliably warm in July. I wouldn't let it being September stop me

The "Lumes" are on so it's a fab time to go! I'm 53 and I never tire of going , and waiting for the trams lit up like a train or boat. 😂😂😂

Hot choc from Costa on the Pier, bracing air, fish and chips, walk along the prom. Dabble on the 2p push machines. What's not to love??? 😂😂😂

We enjoyed the Tower experience, and a little browse round the giant Primark. Trip round the Model Village, then a nice bit of cake in that amazing Art Deco Cafe in Stanley Park..boating lake if its not to cold or out of season.

I'll come with you OP, I'm already excited. 😂

This is the b&b
I think it looks quite nice tbh for the price

so it's 17 years since you were there with your Mother. I guess it will have changed a lot...

Didn't the illuminations get turned on recently ?

Scully01 · 17/09/2024 17:02

I also went for the first time as an adult 2 years ago and found it really run down and depressing.

phew I was panicking that you’d booked the Norbreck castle

MayaPinion · 17/09/2024 17:11

Oh lord no, you can’t take him to Blackpool. It’s a shithole. I went there once and saw a drunk man pissing on the street but it was so windy the piss was blowing back onto his trousers and he didn’t realise or care. That is the essence of Blackpool for me. Never again. Manchester or Liverpool would be good alternatives if you’re looking for a lively weekend.

On the other hand, if he’s a bit of a twat take him to Blackpool and leave him there.

ItWasOnAStarryNight · 17/09/2024 17:12

Stay away from the town centre behind Coral Island, it's crawling with crack heads and horrible dogs and stinks of weed.

I'd check in to the b&b, take a ride through the illuminations and get fish and chips in Bispham before coming back to have drinks at the velvet coaster on the Friday.

On Saturday, start with a trip up the tower, then do the dungeons or Madame Tussaud's. Spend money on the slots in coral island for old times sake and then head back to get ready for the evening. Get a taxi early evening into Lytham (book a table at Farina or The Olive Tree) and have the afternoon in lovely wine bars and eat nice food.

Sunday morning have a brisk walk along the prom before heading home with a stash of Blackpool rock.

Enjoy

He made no effort to engage with your other suggestions or suggest something himself so he can't complain now. If he's moaning about it, it can only be better than he expects when he gets there. I hope you have a lovely time.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 17/09/2024 17:20

Mumsnetters really hate Blackpool for some reason so you won't get balanced replies.

Your husband had the chance to decide where to go and left it to you so he shouldn't complain. Blackpool is a beautiful town with magnificent seaside views that are probably the best the Fylde coast has to offer. The tower is a must-see - the 4d cinema is spectacular and the glass floor is one of my favourite places in the world while Mooky in the tower circus is the best clown in the business imo.

Have a wonderful time recreating your happy holidays.

Do you know what trolling is?
Hint: it’s not people posting that Blackpool is shit.
