Husband isn't happy I have booked a weekend in Blackpool...

Next weekend he said he fancied going away in the UK for two nights.
I asked him where he fancied and he's words were "I don't care ,just a nice break with you "
We haven't been away since July when we went to Cyprus so thought a little trip was a nice idea.
I looked at Edinburgh and hotels were so overpriced
Found a b&b in Blackpool for £130 for two nights with breakfast.
Reviews said it was nice.
Obviously it's a no frills b&b but I don't care.

I used to go to Blackpool every year with my mum and she passed away when I was 13 (now I'm 30) and honestly it was the place with all my happy memories.
I know the back is run down now but I thought it would be nice.
I found a couple of nice bars -bloom bar and beach club or beach bar.

Anyway told husband and he isn't happy
He said he didn't mind ...then I book and he's miserable

Is it that bad now ?
I just thought a couple of cheesy days
Maybe do madam tuzaards, the tower etc
I just want to go to remember my mum too, walk past the hotel we used to stay at.
It's still open

Ok, I’m not from the UK but we are talking about where we will go next, in the UK. Would like to see something new for a weekend.
I think it will not be Blackpool! 😂

ringsingling · 17/09/2024 19:10

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions
Will take them on board for our next trip
Deffo going to Blackpool
Just booked the dungeons and tower and illumination tram tour

"You said Edinburgh or Blackpool as if they were your only choices... what about Cambridge, Rye. Dorset, the Isle of Wight, plucking random examples out of the air?"

The Isle of Wight and Dorset for 2 nights from Newcastle? 🤪

So glad I don't have some man telling me what and what I cannot do.

If I wanted to go to Blackpool to honour my mum and our memories I can!

Your husband sounds a bit controlling OP.

I love Blackpool, yes it's a bit rough round the edges but there is a lot good about it.
Sunsets are great if you get the weather. I'd head to the Beach House if you can, a bit pricey but very good. https://beachhouseblackpool.co.uk/

If you like Chinese there are some great choices, Manderin, Wok Inn and Ocean Palace are all great.

Stanley Park, voted best park in the UK for the second time in three years https://www.visitblackpool.com/detail/stanley-park-17396/

The Tower, Illuminations (fish and chips at Bispham Kitchen are a tradition), Lunch in Lytham square, stroll down the piers...

Some great pictures from Greg https://www.facebook.com/GreggWolstenholmePhotography/

Go with an open mind, stay away from the back streets and you will have a great time.

Only commenting on where I’ve been but It’s a very depressing place, with lots of crime and children in poverty. There is a lot of substance misuse and dysfunction - I worked there. If my dh booked me a weekend here, I wouldn’t go.

ItWasOnAStarryNight · 17/09/2024 19:31

I agree with Bispham Kitchen. Get off the tram there and have fish and chips and some kind of school pudding with custard. So retro but brilliant

Alltheprettyseahorses · 17/09/2024 19:34

I'm glad you're going. Feel a bit jealous now! When you get to the big Bispham lights, get off the tram and walk them instead. Look out for the daleks!

MadKittenWoman · 17/09/2024 19:44

Blackpool is grim.

howtostoptime · 17/09/2024 19:55

So, as a person not from the UK (lived in London for 4 years, often go to Edinburgh for a weekend), where should we go?

No need for a new thread. We often go to Edinburgh or London, bur would like to go somewhere else. Obviously not Blackpool now. Any suggestions yourself @GutsyPoet ? No offence if you actually live in Blackpool, but it doesn’t sound great.

We live near enough it'd be a day trip ... apart from the zoo when dd was young, we only go to Blackpool for hospital visits. But on a nice weekend I'm sure you can have fun there if you take the right attitude with you, and can always go to St Anne's or Lytham.

Not sure why people are recommending the OP visits Southport ... it's a good hour from Blackpool and although it's quite nice not really much to do there.

I live close to Southport and although it's nice enough and there are things to do, there's far more to do in Blackpool. It's crazy to stay in Blackpool for just 2 days and spend 1 visiting somewhere a 2 hour round trip away!

Covidwoes · 17/09/2024 20:32

Blackpool is a shithole, BUT I'd be grateful for any weekend away! The pleasure beach is good fun, but Blackpool itself is depressing. Lytham St Anne's is really lovely, a cheesy attraction like Madame Tussaud's is always a laugh!

Livinginaclock · 17/09/2024 20:39

I go to Lytham Festival every year but stay in Blackpool as it's cheaper, it's fine, I don't mind the amusements, and the tat shops though, and I know each evening I'll be in Lytham anyway.
I am going down next month though to see the new Harry Styles waxwork, I can't wait!

Pop to Lytham for the evening ... its not far but like a different world

Peabody25 · 17/09/2024 20:49

Blackpool's fine on the front if a bit tacky but the town centre isn't that nice. The end with the pleasure beach is the nicer end, there's a decent Wetherspoons called the velvet coaster.

If you walk from that end away from Blackpool, you can walk to st. Anne's, which is lovely, and a bit further onto fairhaven lake for nice walks, motor boy hire and crazy golf. The other end of fairhaven lake joins onto lytham which is also lovely.

If you want a decent place to eat that's not in blackpool, le patio in st Anne's is a lovely Italian and ego in lytham does amazing tapas.

Molone · 17/09/2024 20:51

Blackpool may not be top of everyone’s list but it can’t be all bad or they wouldn’t get so many visitors! The illuminations and fireworks championships are both on at the moment so you won’t be bored.
is it the nicest place in England? No, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make the most of it.
