Without looking it up, do you know what Bubble and squeak is?

Bet it wasn't what I ended up with this morning with my cooked breakfast in town.
I was really disappointed.

Surely it's fried in dripping from the roast, traditionally?

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 24/08/2024 16:13

Yes, and it is the only thing that makes Xmas worth looking forward to.

Boxing Day B&S!!!!!!!!!

Born mid 50s here.

UnctuousUnicorns · 24/08/2024 16:15

A pic of my Boxing Day rumblethumps from a couple of years ago. I had some with brown sauce, was bloody gorgeous, and very warming after a chilly winter's day stroll, I recall.

BobbyBiscuits · 24/08/2024 16:15

Yeah it's cabbage and veg and potatoes left over from a roast dinner, fried in a pan, probably in some sort of animal fat, until it goes kind of crispy on the outside. Served for breakfast with bacon, sausages, eggs etc. A bit like a rugged version of a rosti or traditional home fries/hash from the states, but with leftovers.
I've never actually tried it. They do have it in my favourite caff. But I'm not sure about cabbage for breakfast? It feels more like a lunch thing to me.
I wonder if it's actually nice?

DinnaeFashYersel · 24/08/2024 16:15

I'd have to Google. It's just not something I've ever eaten. It's not a common food in Scotland

Cural · 24/08/2024 16:21

I burn the bottom, scrunch it in, then burn the new bottom. Repeat many times until there's enough burnt bits to keep everyone happy.

ArabellaScott · 24/08/2024 16:26

It's bloody delicious.

BobandRobertaSmith · 24/08/2024 16:34

For@Vabenejulio and any other bacon and onion in bubble and squeak lovers (not me, I’m a purist). I do, however, love bratkartoffeln:

I was at a Tex Mex restaurant in Tenerife once, and ordered fajitas. Should have a mixture of onions and peppers-this one had carrots and green beans! Looked like they'd just stir-fried some leftover vegetables.

Yes I do and I love it!

Coconuthotchocolate · 24/08/2024 16:44

I can’t believe they served you that. Awful, that is what cabbage or Brussels sprouts were invented for. The day after Xmas in our house is the best bit cos of b and s.

YapYapMeow · 24/08/2024 16:47

I think it's traditionally potatoes and cabbage but a cafe near us often uses potatoes, cabbage, sprouts, leeks, onions, kale, probably more I just can't remember. It's lovely anyway.

fussychica · 24/08/2024 16:49

Yes of course, it's my favourite especially with cold meat and pickles on Boxing Day. However, whether mine is what a "classic" recipe would include is probably debatable as mine is any left over and additional veg to ensure there's plenty fried up.

endofthecorridoor · 24/08/2024 16:49

Mash and the leftover veg from a roast

user1471538283 · 24/08/2024 16:50

Oh my DF made the most amazing bubble and squeak. It was crunchy and a bit burnt, served with eggs. He'd sometimes make it late at night as one of our treats.

Whatever leftovers you use it's got to be fried and crunchy!

lljkk · 24/08/2024 16:51

Did not RTFT.
Am not British born.
I think it's sausages & mashed potatoes with gravy.

(google... ahhhh... I had one ingredient right).

Who eats cabbage nowadays? It's hardly a true staple now.

Yes, when I make ir (or used to make it), I would put a variety of vegetables in my bubble and squeak, usually left over from the day before. Even a little bit of carrot, cut up very small, adds something to the flavour. I seasoned well, it always turned out nicely and was well received.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 24/08/2024 16:56

Of course. Delish it is too.

LBFseBrom · 24/08/2024 16:58

Pascha · 24/08/2024 11:50

Mashed potato
Frozen peas and carrot mix 😕

No cabbage or any green veg, no crispy bacon bits, no onion. Wasn't even fried. No salty, crispy edges, no crust. No flavour.

Just toddler style. Mixed up mash and veg.

I was so sad.

That does sound poor, rather slapdash. A cafe or restaurant be able to come up with something better than that, they do cook vegetables after all, and it should have been beautifully fried so that parts of it went brown and crispy. I must say I've never had onion or bacon bits mixed in with bubble but have certainly served it with bacon.

the supermarkets wouldn't be stocking 3 types of cabbage f it wasn't being eaten

Whothefuckdoesthat · 24/08/2024 17:05

It’s food of the gods. Our local cafe does a lovely version and I regularly have some in a sandwich. Crusty bread and lots of butter.

And Boxing Day, made with loads of sprouts, with cold turkey and a couple of hot pigs in blankets. Beautiful.

MrsCarson · 24/08/2024 17:12

Mmmm lovely. Haven't had it in ages.

RainBow725 · 24/08/2024 17:18

This reminds me of the time I ordered corned beef hash and was presented with a bowl of what I can only describe as corned beef soup. 🤮

Delphiniumandlupins · 24/08/2024 17:23

Did you point out the error? They're never going to learn if you let them get away with such a travesty.

Cural · 24/08/2024 17:29

M&S do frozen B&S patties. Soggy, oniony, sad little buggers. Never again.
