What's the most popular boys' and girls' name in your kid's class/school currently?

Seems like 90% of kids in primary schools in my area are called Olivia and Harry.

Where does Arlo come from and why so popular? That seems quite random.

There is a lovely children's book called Arlo the Lion. We were given it when I was pregnant, though I'm not sure when it first came out.
Maybe it has seeped into the consciousness that way?!
(Although if that were the case there would be a lot of kids called veryhungrycaterpillar too I guess....)

Laundryliar · 21/08/2024 21:31

People opt for Arlo because they think it sounds posh!

Wasn’t there a cat in Bing called Arlo? There’s one in my son’s class. (An Arlo, not a cat.)

Lots of Islas and Marias at my kids’ school. Maria must be popular in Poland as they are all from Polish families. Matteo, Oliver and Finn/Finlay are popular among the boys. We are in Edinburgh.

Only one Olivia (Liv), no Noahs and none of DC's Muslim classmates go by Mohammed

Tomatojuiceandvodka · 21/08/2024 21:46

In my son’s class all but three of the girls are either called Mia or Isla. Lots of Henry and Harry too.

the school where I work is overrun with little girls called Molly. We have a lot of Henry Archie and maxes.

Something a bit unusual are quite a few of the boys have quite feminine names ,I can't say not to be outing but unisex names that seem to have only been given to girls before

Mia/Maya/Mya and I can't ever remember which is which.
Theo/Seb/Oliver although I only know one Olivia.

SatinHeart · 21/08/2024 21:58

We are a reasonably naice area in the SW and I've never met a single Arlo.

GoFigure235 · 21/08/2024 22:04

Unusual names in my son's school include:

  • 3 x Cosmo (which I'd assumed was quite niche).
  • Cosima
  • Arlette
  • Mungo
  • Harris
  • Nessie

There are also a couple of Harriets and Victorias (both names which I'd thought were slightly out of fashion). A sea of Freddies, Alfies, Joshuas, Sebbies, Henrys, Jacks, Jamies for the boys. Other popular girls names (more than 1) seem to be Elowen, Elsie, Isla, Mona, Milly, Alice, May, Charlotte and Juniper.

Orangeoranges42 · 21/08/2024 22:08

Nursery Lots of Harrys and Harpers.

Beezknees · 21/08/2024 22:11

DS has just left school. For the girls - a fair few Ellies, Mias, Isobels and Millies in his year. Boys wise - Charlie and Oliver.

Kipperthedawg · 21/08/2024 22:12

Several x Hudson, Immy, Mateo and Lucy.

But generally very few duplicates compared to our 10 x Matthew, Luke, Emma and Rachel of the 1990s.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 21/08/2024 22:12

Olivia
Stan
Aurora

WannabeMeeeeee · 21/08/2024 22:19

Arlo for boys and Iris for girls

Just call your kid Brian or Trevor. Not likely to encounter one of those in a primary school nowadays

lollyPaloozah · 21/08/2024 22:19

In my dc class (he is going into year 2 in September) there are:

2 Rivers (one girl, one boy)
2 Alfies
2 Amelias
2 Noahs
2 Islas

Thecatatnight · 21/08/2024 22:21

Reception class in North East London- no duplicates actually but the names I’ve noticed coming up again & again since nursery/ preschool are:
Girls- Edie, Evie, Ada, Ava, Ivy
Boys- Lucas, Theo, Oscar, Jack.

MyNoseSmells · 21/08/2024 22:26

Duplicates in DCs classes (2 years apart but very similar names in both) are:

  • Lily
  • Rosie
  • Harry
  • Isla
  • Molly
  • Oliver
  • Ella
  • Sam
ConsuelaHammock · 21/08/2024 22:27

Not the same names but my daughter had 4 of the cast of Friends’ names in her class.

Teaandtoast12 · 21/08/2024 22:29

I went into a class once with a Myla, Isla, and Lila

Aproductofmyera80s · 21/08/2024 22:30

Dd who just finished primary school had about 3 Darceys, used to have about 3 Oscar’s but only one was left by year 6. Used to be 2 Emily’s and 2 Lola’s. Only 1 of each by the end.

DS who has just left high school, in primary school had about 3 Lewis, 4 Luke’s or Luca, about 3 Holly’s and 3 poppys.

Flopsy145 · 21/08/2024 22:34

In my dd's nursery I'm seeing lots of variations of Eva/Ava/Ada, Florence and Olivia. Boys, Harry/Leo/Finley I think I've seen a few of.
