How annoying do you find wind chimes?

I mean there are worse sounds of course. But it seems so invasive of all your neighbours' environments to impose so much sound on everyone else.

I would not dream of doing it. But my neighbours' chimes are dinging away all day today as there's a breeze.

I could say something of course but it just feels that it will be hugely resented. She is a bit scary and I want to keep relations positive.

I love them and have a few on my porch, but then I don’t have any neighbours that would be able to hear them. I wouldn’t do it if I had neighbours because I can see how they could become quite annoying

CoolSummerDays · 15/08/2024 12:52

Hate them!

chocolateisavegetable · 15/08/2024 12:53

I utterly detest them

icebearforpresident · 15/08/2024 12:55

Not very to be honest. A couple of our immediate neighbours have them and the only time we really hear them is at night but even then I don’t find that they bother me. They do take them down if it’s really windy though.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 15/08/2024 12:55

I don't mind them for a short period of time. But if I lived next to someone with them, it would really irritate me.

EasilyDisturbed · 15/08/2024 12:56

I detest them too, fortunately no one here has them in fact I haven't seem any for years, hopefully the fashion for them has died out.

SunnieShine · 15/08/2024 12:57

They don't bother me.

wonderingwhatsnext · 15/08/2024 12:57

I don't care either way.

StoatofDisarray · 15/08/2024 12:57

I love them but I wouldn't hang them if anyone else could hear them.

Barleysugar86 · 15/08/2024 12:58

I don't have them but wouldn't mind them next door. We get much worse noises from a non-verbal kid a few doors down who makes a lot of screaming/ moaning noises outside every day for hours (wouldn't dream of saying anything of course), and another neighbour who seems incapable of using their garden without playing their music full blast and disturbing everyones peace.

Another neighbour yesterday had a smelly bonfire right after I put my washing out and when all my windows were open.

Wind chimes in exchange would be very welcome honestly! If this is all your neighbours do to annoy you I think you are lucky.

Bjorkdidit · 15/08/2024 12:58

Quite annoying. I can't stand any sort of 'rhythmic' noise like a ticking clock, alarms, ropes clanking on a flag pole but wind chimes are slightly more tolerable if they're a soft tinkle and not a constant noise.

But they're never something I'd actively choose to add to my life.

Ihaveneedofwaternear · 15/08/2024 13:00

1000/10 on the annoying scale

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 15/08/2024 13:02

One neighbour has wind chimes, the other has kids who are on the trampoline most of the day from 8am. Give me wind chimes any day, it's easy to ignore and it's not an unpleasant sound.

wildfellhall · 15/08/2024 13:04

Thanks for these responses! Sometimes they sound nice for sure, anything is better than an endlessly barking dog, that's my idea of hell.

It's just sometimes I think why would anyone impose that on so many people? It's seems so bizarrely presumptuous.

I agree, it's a small thing!

Very. I can't sleep at my because of my neighbours

chattyness · 15/08/2024 13:07

I love them but my husband really can't bear them so we don't have any, to be fair I wouldn't have them anyway because we have neighbours to consider.

DappledThings · 15/08/2024 13:07

I love them. But I am aware many don't so I don't have any. If I lived for from any neighbours I would. I'd like my neighbours to have some so I could enjoy them without being responsible for them!

SongSungBlues · 15/08/2024 13:08

I love wind-chimes, but I would never dream of having them where they can be heard by neighbours. That's really antisocial.

Kinsters · 15/08/2024 13:12

I love the sound of wind chimes! Don't have any though. Maybe one day when I find a place to put them that won't disturb others.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 15/08/2024 13:15

They're supposed to bring good luck but the murderous vibes they provoke towards the owner can't be good luck, can it? I'm all for live and let live, but not with chimes.
I utterly utterly detest them and our ex-opposite neighbour had huge ones. When the wind blew up the sound bounced off our house. All night and all day for two whole years. They drove me insane. Really, made my life almost unbearable. Neighbours were totally BU but eventually got the message when I was standing outside the house trying to have a conversation with them and they realised how loud they were. They moved them round the side which wasn't so windy.

Then when DH and I rented a house in Spain there was an empty house next door with bloody chimes in the back garden! DH went in there and tied them up.
If I see them for sale in a garden centre it sets off my rage!

TheDandyLion · 15/08/2024 13:16

I don't mind them. We have a small one hanging inside the house so it only chimes when the window is open but my neighbour has one in the garden which isn't offensive.

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 15/08/2024 13:20

I prefer wood to metal ones

Comedycook · 15/08/2024 13:21

Hideous things

I'm so sorry. Maybe there'll be an opportunity for you to ask her to move them to somewhere less windy like inside. Constant dinging is really annoying, like a form of torture.

Beth216 · 15/08/2024 13:27

Horrid jangly things. I'd be round there in the middle of the night cutting them down OP.
