How annoying do you find wind chimes?

I mean there are worse sounds of course. But it seems so invasive of all your neighbours' environments to impose so much sound on everyone else.

I would not dream of doing it. But my neighbours' chimes are dinging away all day today as there's a breeze.

I could say something of course but it just feels that it will be hugely resented. She is a bit scary and I want to keep relations positive.

They're fucking awful. My neighbour had one, we had to put up with it for years until one of the strings snapped so it stopped jingling - bliss! It hung there all tangled and silent on his shed for months.....and then he got another one, a bigger one.

I dream of scaling the fence in the night and nicking it but I'm not a thief and he's the sort to have cctv in his back garden.

JohnTheRevelator · 15/08/2024 17:18

I'd rather hear wind chimes any day over the idiots who pull up in their cars outside my block of flats with their 'music' going full blast. Or the neighbours constant DIY.

yeesh · 15/08/2024 17:19

10/10 hate them

I can’t even put into words how much I detest them. People that have them within earshot of anyone else are just wankers.

Me too. I can't stand them at all. I honestly don't know what I would do if I could hear them every time I opened a window.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 15/08/2024 17:22

More annoying than Robbie Williams singing Let me Entertain You through a loudspeaker on a constant loop with backing vocals by Janice from Friends

Scooby do 🤦‍♀️

Sorry I don’t understand, what’s the facepalm for?

I quite like them.

They do make me think of The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, but only in a pleasantly spooky way.

There you go. They are evil and the people who have them are also evil antisocial.

wildfellhall · 15/08/2024 17:44

I think the reason I could never say anything is that I imagine there is something we do which she hates - so I feel like there's an unwritten deal.

But where is the logic that it's ok? I suppose there's a childlike assumption that if you think a sound is magical and reassuring - maybe everyone else does too.

I loathe them so much I might have to remove them overnight if neighbours had them.

Martiniolives · 15/08/2024 17:53

I love them but they should be far back amongst trees not near doors and windows where they could bother people/ neighbours

wendywoopywoo222 · 15/08/2024 17:57

I love them but would take them down if the neighbours asked me too. (Reluctantly).

Anewuser · 15/08/2024 17:58

I think you might be my neighbour.

We have windchimes in my adult son’s sensory garden. He likes the noise and has very little in his life he can do (severely disabled), so I don’t even feel guilty.

We have a few neighbours, one has two small barky dogs, one likes to party with loud music, another has a small child that likes to cry and scream a lot, and one that likes to practise karaoke.

I would never mention any of this to them since if you have neighbours you need to expect to hear noise.

Bobbotgegrinch · 15/08/2024 18:15

I have a contraption thats basically a hook on a very long stick, that I bought specifically for some wind chimes.

Neighbours were so confused how on earth the wind kept unhooking them on windy nights. They gave up on them in the end.

Spitalfieldrose · 15/08/2024 18:19

My Mum had some super clangy ones in our tiny garden when I lived at home. One night they went missing, sadly to be never seen again. No idea what happened to them 👀👀

Is this true? I have no idea if you're kidding or not 😆.

I think you give a fair reason. If these were for your son - I would be happy to hear them.

I quite like them. We had some but when we got a new rescue dog, he was scared of them so we had to take them down.

PermanentTemporary · 16/08/2024 04:55

A good friend was driven nearly mad by her neighbour's wind chimes. They completely refused to take them in even some of the time. She moved eventually.

I went to a house which had some chimes inside yesterday, so that they rang when the door opened. I thought that was nice.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 16/08/2024 05:02

Any noise that impacts your neighbours should be banned! I have a very inconsiderate neighbour. Every sunny day is ruined by music blasting into my garden. Shouting seems to be the only way they can communicate with each other. It's absolute bliss when they're away. If they had wind chimes I'd have to cut them down in the dead of night.

Pineappleprep · 16/08/2024 05:23

I have a few, absolutely love them
Currently on the hunt for a rain drum so I can have a full garden orchestra

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 16/08/2024 05:41

I like the wooden clunky ones but the others just go through me.

Chrsytalchondalier · 16/08/2024 05:45

Prefer them to barking dogs or screaming children or machinery noises or people shouting! Give me a wind chime any day!

I’ve never heard of these so have just googled. I know what my son will be getting for Christmas. Something else for the neighbours to hate?

Thank you @Pineappleprep

I fucking hate my neighbours' tinkly windchime.

It's like having external tinnitus. It really effects me badly and gets me down. But I can't bring myself to talk to them about it as they've pissed me off over other stuff and I'm struggling to feel civil. @Pocketfullofdogtreats I do feel tortured!

The metal are the worst.... They also have a barking dog and a hot tub. And have had the builders in for months.

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 16/08/2024 21:41

It really does not bother me. I love to hear them and they remind me of the seaside, especially those bigger, wooden ones.

On the curtain rail in the dining room I have some chimes made of metal with a facetted ball thing that catches the sun when it moves and I love it. My nan gave it to me. Unfortunately, so does the cat so I'm going to have to move it.
