How annoying do you find wind chimes?

I mean there are worse sounds of course. But it seems so invasive of all your neighbours' environments to impose so much sound on everyone else.

I would not dream of doing it. But my neighbours' chimes are dinging away all day today as there's a breeze.

I could say something of course but it just feels that it will be hugely resented. She is a bit scary and I want to keep relations positive.

My next door neighbour has them, I fantasise about loppers snipping the strings of the bastard things.

If they like the sound so much, why don't they put them in their bedrooms??!

Blackcats7 · 16/08/2024 21:53

They are such a pointless noise. Very selfish to inflict this on neighbours.

HoppityBun · 16/08/2024 21:54

I like deep bamboo ones but the metal ones drive me to distraction

Waitingfordoggo · 16/08/2024 21:55

I’m pretty noise sensitive but for some reason wind chimes don’t bother me at all.

Noises that do bother me are: loud vehicles, building work, people chewing, films that include shooting and shouting.

TimmyTurtle · 16/08/2024 21:56

Absolutely loathe them especially at night. It's really antisocial to keep them up. I really struggle with noise though.

Abouttthat · 16/08/2024 22:04

I love them and thinking of getting some. My neighbours don't care about annoying neighbours with their dogs or kids early so I don't care if my windchimes are annoying.

MargaretThursday · 16/08/2024 22:24

I love them, but don't have any.
One of my neighbours has them and I love hearing them first thing in the morning when it's windy.

NeverMindTheBackProblems · 16/08/2024 23:44

I used to really like them, MIL had some and I thought they sounded really soothing. DP then bought me one for my birthday and it lived in the garden chinkling away until I read a thread on here about how hated they are. It was promptly removed and put up inside the patio door. I apologise to all of my neighbours and hope they don't hate me.

I think you might be my neighbour.

We have windchimes in my adult son’s sensory garden. He likes the noise and has very little in his life he can do (severely disabled), so I don’t even feel guilty.

We have a few neighbours, one has two small barky dogs, one likes to party with loud music, another has a small child that likes to cry and scream a lot, and one that likes to practise karaoke.

I would never mention any of this to them since if you have neighbours you need to expect to hear noise.

Wind chimes are almost constant.
Why not have them indoors, the. He can clang the hideous things to his heart’s content, without affecting other people?

Wind chimes outdoors are really antisocial for any reason.

JabbaTheBeachHut · 17/08/2024 00:01

They're anti-social and owned by selfish fuckers who would probably be the first to complain about their neighbours music, or barking dog.

I stayed in a holiday let once and taped up the windchimes hanging on the empty cottage next door.

You sound a lovely, considerate neighbour.

Wind chimes Drive people to absolute distraction- they sound so pointless and inane- just noise for noise’s sake.

DamsonDress · 17/08/2024 00:03

Their sound fills me with a white, hot rage I can barely contain. It's up there with my kids dicking about with that harmonica they got their hands on.

Oh I love them, I have a very small bamboo one on my back garden but they are very quiet as I was worried about annoying neighbours. You can only hear them sitting on my decking so I know the neighbour can’t hear them. Much less annoying than the sounds from my neighbours houses (small yappy dogs 😂)

Midnightafternoons · 17/08/2024 00:19

I absolutely hate them.

Well, I don't much care either way in the daytime as I don't really pay much attention to them. But at night, when I'm trying to sleep and like to have the windows open when it's warm, my neighbour's giant clanging wind chime keeps me awake and drives me mad. I think people who say they like them perhaps have never tried to sleep through them clanging loudly.

I did once ask (politely!) if he would mind taking it down at least at night, as it was affecting our ability to sleep, but unfortunately he is not the most reasonable person and ranted about how no one has the right to comment on what he can and can't have in his garden. He claimed I was unreasonable as no other neighbours had complained about it and was quite unpleasant to us after that. We totally avoid him now, but still have to put up with the awful wind chime!

I agree that they should be banned - so selfish and inconsiderate to inflict the noise on others.

gano · 17/08/2024 00:24

As of this summer, I detest them. Hadn't given them much thought prior, but my neighbours installed a large tinkly windchill in their garden a few months ago, and it's been a nuisance. During the hot weather, I couldn't sleep with the windows open because of the noise. I can hear it with the windows closed as well, but if I pull the duvet up around my head it blocks it out somewhat. I haven't mentioned it to them because I don't want any bad feeling. If they didn't take it down, it would wind me up massively. I'm good friends with another neighbour, who's mentioned that they aren't impressed with the windchill either.

OneLoyalGreyFish · 17/08/2024 01:20

I love them!
I have several in the house hung near windows so when they’re open they gently ‘tinkle’.
i have 4 in our 150 feet long garden, 1 is metal and 3 wooden/bamboo ones. I’m
even more determined that they stay out there as it’s not constant (if it isn’t windy), not like the racket we have to put up with the neighbours at one side who all through spring, summer and autumn are constantly using power tools and building something or other in the garden, garage or house. It never stops! He even had the cheek one day to say he might cut the wind chimes if they get too noisy! I moved them to the centre of our garden and now have tall shrubs along that side. Neighbours at the other side chain smoke outside so all we can smell constantly during this hot weather is that, even early hours of the morning it floats up to our open bedroom windows. (We call them Fag Ash Lil and Woodbine Willie 😆) - this is more antisocial than our lovely wind chimes. Their garden is like a jungle with weeds and brambles encroaching onto ours, oh and they have rats under their decking!
So in answer to anyone who might ask us to take them in the answer would be FUCK OFF!

Surely if they’re that loud that you can’t sleep then he can hear them too?! So wouldn’t be able to sleep himself as he’s even closer to them?

I love them (as I’ve just posted above) but I wouldn’t have massive ones, we have one that gently tinkles and the 3 bamboo ones you only hear if you’re quite close to them.

GrandHighPoohbah · 17/08/2024 01:27

I bloody hate wind chimes. My next door neighbour has some. The only saving grace is that they're in a reasonably sheltered spot so don't start their god-awful noise at the drop of a hat. I would love to complain about them, but on balance, with teenage DC in our house, we probably make more noise than them overall so I daren't 😂

Topseyt123 · 17/08/2024 01:54

I love them. However, I know that on here you are supposed to hate and detest them but I don't.

I have two sets, which hang just inside the back door and the patio doors. They only sound on days when those doors are open.

mathanxiety · 17/08/2024 01:59

All my neighbours have them.

I like them.

merrymelodies · 17/08/2024 02:28

I love them. Neighbours have never complained.

ClipTap · 17/08/2024 05:01

I hate them

I stayed in my friends house years ago in the back room facing her garden and her wind chimes were really annoying

She took them straight down after we discussed that yes the neighbours had DC with rooms at the back who'd either get nightmares from them or be kept awake at night

stepfordwifey · 17/08/2024 05:48

Bloody hate them. Our neighbour had them and on a warm summer's evening they would jangle outside our open bedroom window.
Couldn't stand it as it was stopping me from sleeping. I asked them to move them further down the garden and thankfully they got the hint and took the bloody things down.
DH didn't even notice but it made me murderous.

His bedroom is on the front of the house so he apparently can't hear it (ours is at the back of our house) and he says he enjoys the clanging anyway (that's alright then, nevermind about anybody else!)

It's often very windy at night and it's a very big metal chime - the clanging is loud so it surely must be annoying everyone around (there is a little private road/cul de sac behind our houses, so a few houses are close to our gardens) - I wonder how many other neighbours are putting up with it because they don't want to have to ask him to take them down.
