How annoying do you find wind chimes?

I mean there are worse sounds of course. But it seems so invasive of all your neighbours' environments to impose so much sound on everyone else.

I would not dream of doing it. But my neighbours' chimes are dinging away all day today as there's a breeze.

I could say something of course but it just feels that it will be hugely resented. She is a bit scary and I want to keep relations positive.

We were given some lovely bamboo ones when we moved into our current home as a housewarming. I honestly didn't even think they'd annoy anyone and we don't really have a lot of close neighbours

Anyway a few weeks after we hung them up we came out one morning and they were gone. Cut down in their infancy.

There's only a couple of gardens that could have accessed ours so we probably could have identified the culprits. But we didn't want a neighbour conflict and everyone had been so welcoming that we took it on the chin. Accepted someone had been triggered and never got another set.

Bluddy hell @BettyBardMacDonald ... That's a bit much. "Anyone who doesn't like it can fuck off? "!!

How about we all try and be more considerate of imposing noise on other people? Confused

My neighbours have flat out said "my kids will make as much noise as they please."

Therefore, so will I.

Mumteedum · 18/08/2024 13:06

Well then I hope you don't have other neighbours who are coping with loud kids with selfish parents and your wind chime retaliation! 😬

That's amazing, to go onto somebody's property is so hardcore considering how many people have cameras now - that is bold as brass!

If someone loves wind chimes so much, hang them in your house and switch a fan on nearby. Problem solved, neighbours won't be annoyed.

That's how many of us feel about screeching kids and those kicking footballs against fences.

When they confine their noisemakers to the indoors, I'll consider doing so.

Midnightafternoons · 18/08/2024 15:11

But are children outside making noise 24 hours a day?

There's no breeze 24 hours a day.

Hmm, yes okay you have a point there. Sign of the times I guess, kids used to play out in the streets and parks not their back gardens.

Incredibly

Ok...are the kids often outside making loud noise at 3am?

There's very often a breeze or worse at various points through the night, if not constantly.

That’s just bone headed stubbornness.

Thank goodness most decent neighbours are more amenable to discussion.

I'd report them for theft or vandalism. I have a solution to that. As it is, my wind chimes hardly ever sound as it's not that windy. Sometimes I want to hear them so I got a recording of wind chimes that sound the same as mine. Hardly ever use it but would use it much more often if one of the neighbours decided to vandalise my property. The recording is much more consistent. Of course, the sound must come from outside.

I wouldn't go next door and remove what I don't like of the neighbours.

My neighbour's bedrooms are on the other side of the house to the chimes, so I doubt they can hear it. If they complained I'd take it down at night. During the day I'll do what I want. I'm willing to negotiate though. If they get rid of a particular noise, I'll get rid of the chimes.

Can I get my neighbours to move some of their annoying stuff inside then? If not, the chimes stay.

BettyBardMacDonald · 18/08/2024 22:46

Screaming kids by daylight are just as disruptive and obnoxious to me as some may find chimes at 3am. Same for leaf machines.

Midnightafternoons · 18/08/2024 23:00

At least children typically sleep at night and aren't always at home and in their garden.

If your neighbour has stationed a child in their garden 24 hours a day under strict instructions to shout out every time there is a slight breeze, with louder shouts for stronger wind, day or night, then it might be comparable.

I don't impose screeching children, leaf blowers, barking dogs etc on my neighbours and yet I'm tortured by hideous wind chimes. I'm sure that you have some nearby neighbours who are considerate of others? Not fair on them. I really don't understand the selfish attitude.

Any other neighbours of mine are far enough away not to hear my chimes. At most, my chimes go off one to two days a week, if that, and for short periods. Next door probably can't hear that much but even if they do, they make much more regular noise than that. Until they sort themselves out, there are no rules about what I can and can't do in my garden.

wildfellhall · 21/08/2024 14:40

I agree with people who talk about the quiet sanctity of the very early morning.

I think we shouldn't create noise for other people more than we have to.

If everyone else were quiet, that would be fine.

But people who feel justified in creating noise that affects others, then complain about wind chimes, can take a leap.

My neighbour mowed his lawn for the third time this week yesterday, followed by his usual session with noisy old leaf machine and strimmer. Literally feet from the window where I work. He does it because he's retired and bored and clearly couldn't care less about the environment. The grass is about an inch long, if that.

Due to his lack of consideration, I feel no qualms about hanging my six windchimes a few feet from the property line.

Full support here and totally agree. My neighbours were the reason I felt okay about getting wind chimes. No complaints will be considered from them. I honestly wouldn't have got them if they didn't make me feel justified.

Very

PussGirl · 21/08/2024 22:53

I like big bamboo ones. They need more than just a light breeze to make a noise and I like the sound much better than that made by small ones, especially of metal.

I don’t have any though as I’d hate to annoy the neighbours!

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 15/08/2024 13:20

I prefer wood to metal ones

Same....i love wind chimes.

Saphire123 · 01/02/2025 01:22

I love them and I have them. They look and sound lovely to me.
Neighbours can't hear them, so no chance of them annoying anyone.
