How annoying do you find wind chimes?

I mean there are worse sounds of course. But it seems so invasive of all your neighbours' environments to impose so much sound on everyone else.

I would not dream of doing it. But my neighbours' chimes are dinging away all day today as there's a breeze.

I could say something of course but it just feels that it will be hugely resented. She is a bit scary and I want to keep relations positive.

I love them. When I'm rich enough to not have neighbours I'll have loads of them in the garden.

jonesybonesy · 15/08/2024 13:30

I love them. I don't own any though

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 15/08/2024 13:38

Different things set off different people. DH goes bonkers when someone has a bonfire and smoke gets in the house, but windchimes are the absolute pits for me. Mind you, the ones we had to endure were really big clanging metal ones rather than little tinkly or wooden ones.

LoneHydrangea · 15/08/2024 13:40

I can’t even put into words how much I detest them. People that have them within earshot of anyone else are just wankers.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 15/08/2024 13:41

I doubt the birds like them either, especially in nesting season. Not very wildlife-friendly at all.

cookiebee · 15/08/2024 14:12

I can tune noises out, my partner can’t, have both been up in the middle of the night many times investigating a noise he can hear like we are in an episode of Scooby Doo! But even wind chimes get to me, a past neighbour had some, they sounded like the sound effect for casting a spell, it was like living next door to bloody Wizadora!

BashfulClam · 15/08/2024 14:14

I hate them, idiots use them to tell if the wind is blowing. One house betray had the bamboo clunky horrors but I’m luckily far enough away not to hear them. My old director at one workplace snuck over and cut his neighbours down in the dead of night.

DTisawazzock · 15/08/2024 14:15

Horrible. There's a house round the corner from us that has them and every time I pass I hear the bloody things. I feel so sorry for neighbours around them. They are very anti social.

oakleaffy · 15/08/2024 14:20

Wind chimes are the works of the Divil.
Awful things that are so detested by so many people.
They sound so bloody inane.
What is the point , apart from to cause misery to those living within Hearing distance?

OP
can you cut the clapper off them?

NONE of them sound pleasant.
Tinkly tinkle tink tink to the Dong Dong clonk clonk one’s.

Hate them all!

expiredplants · 15/08/2024 14:25

They should be illegal, imo. As should any repeated nuisance noise imposed on your neighbours.

TokyoSushi · 15/08/2024 14:29

My neighbour has some, but then we have a dog and 2x DC and they don't, although the dog is well behaved and the DC are teen/preteen so not shrieking in the garden.

Honestly, on breezy days like today, the wind chimes actually make me feel murderous.

CreationNat1on · 15/08/2024 14:30

Soooo flipping annoying, my twee neighbour has one..... Chiming away in the middle of the night.

Boopbeepbeepboop · 15/08/2024 14:30

I have a small one in my garden, makes a tinkly noise, I dont personally like this giant ones in my garden, they can be quite loud. The little tinkly sounding ones remind me of my Grandpops 🥰

eggandchip · 15/08/2024 14:41

I like them i like the sounds of them.
I have 4 one near each window helps me sleep.
My neighbour has a few in her garden dont bother me id rather hear them than kids.
Love it when its a rough windy rainy or just a windy night just hear the chimes im out like a log.

longdistanceclaraclara · 15/08/2024 14:49

My neighbour's chimes annoy the shit out of me. They are right outside my back door on their side of the fence. Clanging all day today.

They're dicks, so I haven't raised it with them.

muddyford · 15/08/2024 14:52

Why would anyone add extra noise outside? Another vote for making them illegal.

MouseKeys · 15/08/2024 14:54

My neighbour has some that I love, I mentioned to her how much I enjoyed listening to them when I'm round at hers and she then got me my own set for the garden.

But to be fair, both our gardens are quite big and there are no other neighbours within earshot so at least we're both on the same page 🤣

You'd make windchimes illegal?! 🤣

strawberrybarley · 15/08/2024 14:56

They don't bother me at all, I prefer the wood ones to the metal ones though Smile

GeraniumLeaves · 15/08/2024 14:57

After my neighbour got wind chimes last year I stopped using the garden. They’re the sort of lighter than foil type that tinkle with the very slightest of breeze. I am especially sensitive to noise, so recognise this is an extreme reaction. They’re nice people with some health problems that means they rarely leave the house so seems churlish to complain. But, yes, has spoilt any enjoyment of my own garden so I don’t bother with it any more.

TinkerTiger · 15/08/2024 15:00

Where tf do you all live that your neighbours have wind chimes? In my 15+ years of living in various areas around London, not once have I ever heard one Confused

midlifeattheoasis · 15/08/2024 15:15

On a scale of 1-10...it would be a 10 from me

EwwSprouts · 15/08/2024 16:22

I like them. Don't have any but am now thinking they would be a distraction from the radio next doors blast out every sunny afternoon.

I quite like them.

They do make me think of The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, but only in a pleasantly spooky way.
