Cancel holiday to Cornwall due to riots?!

ShouldICancel · 05/08/2024 13:00

I've name changed for this as I feel quite silly even asking this! We're meant to be in Cornwall from this weekend for 7 nights and DH is saying we'll have to wait and see what happens with all the riots. For context, we're brown, but not Muslim (I say this because I know Muslims are being sadly targeted :( )

At first I thought DH is overly cautious (which he tends to be) and needs a reality check, but having said that, for the first time in almost 18 years I've felt a bit unsafe in the UK, so maybe I'm the one who needs a reality check.

While most of the news has focused on the riots in the north, I wanted to check with those in South (especially Cornwall) if you've seen any issues? Would it be safe to travel? My parents will also be joining us, but they will be travelling by train from Paddington. I'm hoping the train journey is safe. My parents don't live in the UK and are just visiting over the summer, so they do sometimes stand out more than me, DH and the kids.

TIA!

This isn’t the video I saw of someone getting dragged from their car.

I’m not sure what city the one I watched happened it.

I definitely think avoiding any of the planned riots is a good way to stay safer because people are being attacked.

They dragged an Asian man out of his car in Hull

Totally agree.

TeenLifeMum · 05/08/2024 16:16

They’ve been in Weymouth and Plymouth. I think you’ll be fine in Cornwall but I also sadly understand why you’d ask the question. I’m in the South West and we’ve seen an increase in aggression towards non white staff in the hospital I work in. I’m truly appalled by the behaviour but also surprised by some of the flippant responses on here. It’s a scary time to be a person of colour in our country and I can’t understand how we’ve reached such low tolerance levels in 2024.

Riots?

Cornwall?

In the middle of holiday season?

Really?

Come on OP.

sunglassesonthetable · 05/08/2024 16:18

They dragged an Asian man out of his car in Hull

This is beyond appalling and vile. I don't disagree !

but I'll say it once more , it is not happening routinely along roads.

Yeah because the Cornish love tourists at the best of times. It's a very legitimate concern.

They stopped cars in Middlesborough too. If they hadn't been white they'd have dragged them out too. Doesn't have to be routine to be terrifying.

Metheven · 05/08/2024 16:20

There are no riots down here in Cornwall, whatsoever, although I do understand your concern, it must be very worrying for anyone living in the vicinity of them.

I genuinely think we are too laid back to riot about anything. Although people can get a bit heated as to whether the crimp is on the top or the side of your pasty. And second homes, don't mention that to anyone!

I hope you do come down and have a lovely holiday with your family.

fussychica · 05/08/2024 16:21

As far as I'm aware only place in SW that's experienced any trouble is Bristol.

Hopebridge · 05/08/2024 16:21

I'm in Devon and no issues here. My friends just been to Cornwall and had no issues. I understand your concerns as the news is scary.

sunglassesonthetable · 05/08/2024 16:23

Yeah because the Cornish love tourists at the best of times. It's a very legitimate concern.

It's a legitimate concern after watching any of these riots unfold. I understand that.

But in Cornwall ? in St Ives? No.

That's why OP is asking.

And I don't know what you're getting at @Fluufer Trying to imply that Cornish people are ready to start thuggery on tourists. Are you one of these right wing stirrers?

Howyoualldoworkme · 05/08/2024 16:24

Can I also say to anybody coming to the South Coast that contrary to the press there has been NO rioting in Portsmouth!
There was a small protest at the Guildhall on Saturday for a couple of hours but no trouble or damage.

sunglassesonthetable · 05/08/2024 16:24

Doesn't have to be routine to be terrifying.

I didn't say it wasn't terrifying. It's horrendous.

This is bonkers OP. You are at more risk of getting struck by lightening than getting caught up in the Great Cornish Race Riots of 2024

On the one hand it is bonkers, as Cornwall is thankfully not full of thick racist chavs, but on the other hand, I'm not Muslim and I might think twice about going to a part of the country I didn't know if there could be a risk to my safety, so I can see where the OP is coming from.

I'm not a stirrer of anything. I don't think the Cornish are prone to rioting, but I think it is sensible for ethnic minorities to be exceedingly cautious at the moment.
I am Cornish btw. With a black DH. I've lived both sides of Cornwall.

Conkersinautumn · 05/08/2024 16:26

Cornwall HUGELY unwelcoming place any day of the week. Nor a welcoming place I guess they've had too much of tourists and their trash. But it makes for somewhere I couldn't relax.

Headabovetheparapets · 05/08/2024 16:27

I’m so sorry you’re having to feel this way. The rioting is just horrific.
I’m in Cornwall & there are no signs of trouble, & practically getting the renta-mobs to the more rural areas probably isn’t logistically beneficial to the rioters

As @BeeCucumber says bring brollys & suntan lotion & don’t trust that if the suns out in the morning it will stay that way🤣
I do hope your family & your parents can enjoy your holiday.

Ted27 · 05/08/2024 16:30

For those being dismissive of other people's real fears, there were no riots anywhere until last week.
Many of the rioters are nor local. Even in cities it's not the case that the most obvious areas are experiencing riots.
I'm from Liverpool and was surprised and shocked to see that my childhood library was set fire to this weekend.
My parents still live there so I visit a lot. Although much has changed I'm not aware that there are any mosques, hotels or other obvious targets.
I can think of other parts of Liverpool which would be much more likely flash points.

BeachRide · 05/08/2024 16:30

Cornwall? You're good. I hope you have a lovely holiday. Smile

Bobbybobbins · 05/08/2024 16:30

I am so sorry that this has become a consideration for you @ShouldICancel

FWIW we are on the Isle of Wight this week and quite a lot of black and Asian families and not seen any signs of ill feeling at any tourist places we have been to, though obviously I could have not seen the full picture.

I have been alert given the current situation. I work in an inner city multicultural secondary school and would be gutted if any of my students experienced any racist attitudes.

🤣 & don’t forget about jam first!!!
but generally I’d agree we’re mainly far to chilled to bother with the effort of rioting!!

Tell me that isn't planting uncertainty.

The uncertainty is already planted. And not be people who are rightfully afraid.

I8toys · 05/08/2024 16:33

Out in Leeds Saturday night supposedly a hotbed of rioting if you believe the media. Didn't see a thing. Although husband did take the older car into the town centre in case it was torched.

Enjoy your holiday.

Fluufer · 05/08/2024 16:09

Cornwall is always a bit racist, but I don't think they're really the rioting types. I'd steer clear of Plymouth (but that's Devon).
I have a black DH and mixed kids, and although we're not the targets (yet) we are watching and waiting before going anywhere.
I am deeply ashamed of our country today.

Cornwall is not racist. We have our fair share of idiots but they are n't necessarily racist.
It's tough living here as a minority as it would be anywhere. You end up representing your entire minority. Much like when I get was the only woman in IT, I was the go to expert for 51% of the population.
It's got a lot better, as has every where but Cornish people have been travelling the world for mining, satellite dish installation and surfing for decades.
