Cancel holiday to Cornwall due to riots?!

I've name changed for this as I feel quite silly even asking this! We're meant to be in Cornwall from this weekend for 7 nights and DH is saying we'll have to wait and see what happens with all the riots. For context, we're brown, but not Muslim (I say this because I know Muslims are being sadly targeted :( )

At first I thought DH is overly cautious (which he tends to be) and needs a reality check, but having said that, for the first time in almost 18 years I've felt a bit unsafe in the UK, so maybe I'm the one who needs a reality check.

While most of the news has focused on the riots in the north, I wanted to check with those in South (especially Cornwall) if you've seen any issues? Would it be safe to travel? My parents will also be joining us, but they will be travelling by train from Paddington. I'm hoping the train journey is safe. My parents don't live in the UK and are just visiting over the summer, so they do sometimes stand out more than me, DH and the kids.

TIA!

I would say that there is a part of the local population in D&C who are opposed to immigration (see brexit vote , despite the massive amount of money ploughed into region by EU) and who hold racist beliefs - but wouldn’t necessarily recognise it as racism.

I can’t see there being riots here, and I do think people would jump in and help if they saw you experience racism. (But then I’m an optimist, and maybe my faith is misplaced).

We're putting our plans on halt for Lake district next week, I wouldn't risk it.

The streets of Kendal are unlikely t be at the heart of a riot!

Normallynumb · 05/08/2024 13:21

I'm really sorry you feel you have to consider this
My DS has actually been in St Ives this weekend as his GF is from there and you will be fine
The most you'll have to worry about is the traffic I'm sure.
Have a lovely holiday

OlympicsFanGirl · 05/08/2024 13:22

I'm so sorry you are having to consider this.

saraclara · 05/08/2024 13:22

I'm really sorry that you have to think this way. But you should have no worries about going to Cornwall, and likewise the poster who had plans to go to the Lake District. People will not be travelling there to riot, because both places are as white and mosque -free as any part of England can get.

Echobelly · 05/08/2024 13:22

I wouldn't cancel - as people have said, it's big cities by and large.

I'm sorry this is such a horrible and scary time for you overall though and hoping the only thing these vile actions cause long term is for more people to support everyone in their community.

ShouldICancel · 05/08/2024 13:23

Thanks all! I'll share this thread with DH to put his mind at ease too.

Firstly I'm extremely sorry you feel this way. No o e should feel persecuted in their country.

But I agree with others. Cornwallis unlikely to see riots.

They have had some in Bristol so I'd avoid going that way if you can but they weren't as bad as the ones up north.

FadedRed · 05/08/2024 13:24

Appalling to hear that anyone is having to think like this.
I hope you can enjoy a peaceful holiday, worrying only about what flavour ice cream to try next.

WaltzingWaters · 05/08/2024 13:25

I’m so sorry you even need to ask this question.

I live in Cornwall. Haven’t seen or heard of any issues here. Please come and have a lovely holiday. Fingers crossed for some sunshine for you.

AlwaysSometimesRarelyNever · 05/08/2024 13:32

I am sorry you feel this way. I hope you decide to go and have a lovely break.

I'm so sorry to hear you are having to consider this. I can't believe it is happening. I think you will be fine in Cornwall. Whereabouts are you staying? I know the the Padstow area well and I can't imagine any riots happening in that area.

I second this. No advice as such but I’m really sorry this even has to be asked!

negomi90 · 05/08/2024 13:36

I'm in Brighton (so other end of the coast) we had pride this weekend. The only protests we had were the lefties protesting Coca Cola and its use of factories on bad land. They stopped the coca cola float from parading. And they were tame enough that they had local green MP's support.
No sign of the far right over here.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 05/08/2024 13:36

I just Googled, as I was surprised to find any mosques in Cornwall, there are 2 ?One in Canon Downs, Truro and one in Launceston, however Google maps doesn't show the 2nd one - maybe it has closed down.

Cornwall I would think must be one of the safest places in the UK, to the locals you will be ' tourists ' ( well actually they have other words for tourists / non locals but that doesn't include your race / colour / religion )

St Ives is busy and beautiful.

If anywhere, it would be Plymouth I would avoid. Exeter is a ' nicer ' city, and Torquay is too small.

Personally I don't see the thugs travelling all the way down to Cornwall, too far too much effort - better to terrorise a nearby town/;city closer to where they live !

There definitely won't be any riots in St Ives or Cornwall, possibly Plymouth at a push but still can't see it.

You are safe as non-white here.

You will definitely get mugged for your food by seagulls in St Ives tho, PP was not joking so be prepared! Also parking spaces and tables in town are impossible this time of year unless prebooked.

Peaceatlast01 · 05/08/2024 13:38

Hi OP,

I’m sorry this is something you need to consider due to not being white - I can’t believe I’m writing that in 2024!

However, I live close to St Ives and you’ll be absolutely fine. As PP said, if there wasn’t stuff on the news about the riots up country, you’d have no idea these riots were going on outside of Cornwall.

Please come and have a lovely holiday ❤️

Mainoo72 · 05/08/2024 13:39

They won’t be rioting in Cornwall!!

onceuponatree · 05/08/2024 13:39

Sorry this is happening and that you feel so unsafe.

I think you will be fine in Cornwall. Please don't let the actions of a few ruin things for you.

I will also be in Cornwall next week and hopefully see you there.

Have a lovely time OP.

lovescats3 · 05/08/2024 13:41

Sorry you feel like this because of some mindless thugs you'll be fine in Cornwall and lake district, it's cities they are targeting

Allthehorsesintheworld · 05/08/2024 13:41

You’ll be fine in Cornwall. Honestly, no one will take any notice of you as long as you park prettily ( used to a genuine sign in Devon and Cornwall) and put your jam and cream on in the right order.
I was in Cornwall a month or so ago, same sleepy old place.

ChishiyaBat · 05/08/2024 13:41

No advice, I just wanted to say I am so sorry that you feel unsafe, I hope you have a wonderful holiday❤️.

Meadowfinch · 05/08/2024 13:41

Don't cancel. It will be fine. Go and have a lovely time x

Wehadabetamax · 05/08/2024 13:42

There is a protest planned here in Plymouth this evening. Hopefully it will turn out to be a damp squib. I can't see there being any issues in Cornwall though.

AngryBird6122 · 05/08/2024 13:43

DH is brown and we have a trip to Birmingham soon but will still be going. OP I wouldn't let your life stop because of these people - there are more good than bad out there and I certainly wouldn't be worried about cornwall!
