Cancel holiday to Cornwall due to riots?!

I've name changed for this as I feel quite silly even asking this! We're meant to be in Cornwall from this weekend for 7 nights and DH is saying we'll have to wait and see what happens with all the riots. For context, we're brown, but not Muslim (I say this because I know Muslims are being sadly targeted :( )

At first I thought DH is overly cautious (which he tends to be) and needs a reality check, but having said that, for the first time in almost 18 years I've felt a bit unsafe in the UK, so maybe I'm the one who needs a reality check.

While most of the news has focused on the riots in the north, I wanted to check with those in South (especially Cornwall) if you've seen any issues? Would it be safe to travel? My parents will also be joining us, but they will be travelling by train from Paddington. I'm hoping the train journey is safe. My parents don't live in the UK and are just visiting over the summer, so they do sometimes stand out more than me, DH and the kids.

TIA!

Just coming on to say I am so so sorry you are feeling like this. I hope you have a wonderful holiday.

Truth be known despite tourism being their biggest income generator, the Cornish don’t really like anyone who isn’t from Cornwall.

I'm sorry for your sister's experience but that's just a massive generalisation. I moved to Cornwall 24 years ago and own a business here, and have loads of properly Cornish friends. It does take time and you need to put in the effort, but lots of places are like that.

There are riots planned for Saturday in Penzance the next town over from st Ives

Where did you hear this?

Edit: I have seen something on the BID FB page. I really hope it isn't true. I really do have no words :(

Unfortunately there is talk of protest/riots in the Penzance area. Maybe in other areas aswell EST to avoid if you can. Cornwall ain't so pleasant lately weather wise. Bar a few nice hot days

A few days later:

There were no riots. There wasn't even the slightest hint of a riot. If you think about it, travelling trouble makers are unlikely to sit for hours on the A30, especially on Boardmasters weekend.

There was however a really lovely anti racism demo in the centre of town, which unequivocally showed that anyone thinking the town is going to jump on board with such vileness is 100% wrong.

@ShouldICancel how is your holiday going?

ShouldICancel · 13/08/2024 20:33

@ScampiandChip Amazing!! 😊😊
We had good weather apart from today, but even today was pretty great as we managed to catch a movie at the cinema. The kids were surprised by the quaint little cinema with only 3 screens 🤣

@ScampiandChip so happy you are having a great time. Me, DH and the kids are going to Torquay this Friday and as an Afro Caribbean family, these posts have really given me assurance, although we will still be vigilant..so thank you everyone

Lovely, but I do hope they were not waving Palestinian flags! I have seen some on anti-racist demos around the UK and that makes the protest somewhat racist IMO, as does the awful chant 'from the river to the sea', which is anti-Semitic.

ScampiandChip · 14/08/2024 14:30

Waving any flag seems to be problematic nowadays, which is a shame.

You haven't been watching the Olympics, have you? Or the Last Night of the Proms?

ScampiandChip · 14/08/2024 17:34

@Marseillaise whay is your point?
