Cancel holiday to Cornwall due to riots?!

ShouldICancel · 05/08/2024 13:00

I've name changed for this as I feel quite silly even asking this! We're meant to be in Cornwall from this weekend for 7 nights and DH is saying we'll have to wait and see what happens with all the riots. For context, we're brown, but not Muslim (I say this because I know Muslims are being sadly targeted :( )

At first I thought DH is overly cautious (which he tends to be) and needs a reality check, but having said that, for the first time in almost 18 years I've felt a bit unsafe in the UK, so maybe I'm the one who needs a reality check.

While most of the news has focused on the riots in the north, I wanted to check with those in South (especially Cornwall) if you've seen any issues? Would it be safe to travel? My parents will also be joining us, but they will be travelling by train from Paddington. I'm hoping the train journey is safe. My parents don't live in the UK and are just visiting over the summer, so they do sometimes stand out more than me, DH and the kids.

TIA!

I am so sorry you have to think twice about feeling safe in your own country. Even more so I'm sorry anyone doesn't feel safe here, society is in a sad state of affairs.

This is nonsense. You put the cream on first, approximately two inches thick. If you try to put cream on top of the jam then it doesn’t adhere properly because the jam is too slippery.
Ratio of cream to jam is also important. 98% cream. 2% jam.

Cream to jam ratio: yes
Order of application: no.

Agreed the jam is slippery, which makes it slide off the cream. Jam first allows the creation of a flat surface for the cream. Cream first creates a sloping surface from which to lose the jam. Plus, directly-applied cream makes the scone crumble, limiting the quantity that can be applied.

No wonder it's so tempting to ditch the scone and jam, and just go for the cream with a big spoon!

Hi, I've just seen doing the rounds on Facebook, a warning to avoid Penzance at 2pm this Saturday as there is a "demonstration" - the word used on the post.

I'm not sure if this is really happening, but I would feel awful if I didn't mention it just in case.

Ladybyrd · 07/08/2024 12:08

Warnings of demonstrations in Torquay this afternoon. The warning hasn't come from via the news but a leak from somewhere a bit more official.

I would just keep an eye on Cornwall live and whatnot and avoid large towns and cities when there are warnings of demonstrations. If you're actually staying in the centre of one of those large towns or cities I might think twice about going though.

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/08/2024 12:15

Why on earth would there be “protests” in Penzance?
Latest demographic figures I found show inhabitants as follows. Overwhelmingly white population.

Country of birth: Total
15,712
Europe
15,243
Europe: United Kingdom
14,717
Europe: EU countries
486
Europe: EU countries: European Union EU14

What’s to protest about?

Ted27 · 07/08/2024 12:23

@MrsSkylerWhite

Cornwall is clearly overwhelmingly white. However please don't confuse country of birth with skin colour/ethnicity.
My friends live in the area, the kids were born in Cornwall. They are not white.

There is also a lot of rural poverty in Cornwall.

Where did you see this? Sorry, I know you said Facebook, but what page? Is it protesting against the riots? Or something darker?

Emzy78 · 07/08/2024 12:35

I'm planning to go to Torquay next Friday with the DH and kids.
The hotel owner who is Thai has said she has not experienced any problems at all and has seen lots of diverse tourists...so we are still going to go by car

skyeisthelimit · 07/08/2024 12:41

We are in Paignton next week and it hadn't even occurred to me that there might be protests. However Torquay is literally next door to Paignton.

Hopefully it will all die down again soon.

Because the entire purpose of Reform is based on racism. Can you explain why you voted for it?

I didn't, as I said in my OP.

Ah, so your one of those who conflates immigration with skin colour. I see.

Yes, seriously. You seem to quickly and erroneously label people, without actually knowing any of them. Plenty of not-white people not only voted for Reform but also represented them - are they all racists too? Do you just get your opinions from the Guardian? Plenty of racists (of all skin colours) voted for Labour, the LibDems, the Green party, the Workers' Party, the Conservatives, and every other party, yet you seem particularly against Reform voters, even suggesting "they" don't holiday in "nice" places like Cornwall. Give your head a wobble.

There’s a very odd phenomenon that people such as Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman seem to be influenced by. Not necessarily racism (some of it is religion based) but rather pull the ladder up behind you syndrome. Their families have benefitted hugely from immigration into the UK but they seem strangely loathe to afford the same opportunities to others. I really don’t get it at all.

I applaud immigration. The UK would be in deep trouble without it. Unless you think the numbskulls we’ve seen lobbing bricks at the police will settle down and fill all of the vacancies in our care, hospitality, retail, education, transport, engineering, science and medical sectors?

White Reform voters? Yes, racists (conscious or otherwise).

It's nothing to do with pulling up the ladder behind you, it's trying to ensure that everyone climbs up the same ladder, rather than some climbing in a window.

There is a leaked email warning of trouble in Torquay this afternoon. Hopefully it won't come to much but the police are standing by.

It's local people sharing it so not on a group, but the original post warning people came from an Instagram account called Mazeyjune (red star as profile picture). There are videos on their Instagram story, that go into a bit more detail.

I just Googled, as I was surprised to find any mosques in Cornwall, there are 2 ?One in Canon Downs, Truro and one in Launceston, however Google maps doesn't show the 2nd one - maybe it has closed down.

Cornwall I would think must be one of the safest places in the UK, to the locals you will be ' tourists ' ( well actually they have other words for tourists / non locals but that doesn't include your race / colour / religion )

St Ives is busy and beautiful.

If anywhere, it would be Plymouth I would avoid. Exeter is a ' nicer ' city, and Torquay is too small.

Personally I don't see the thugs travelling all the way down to Cornwall, too far too much effort - better to terrorise a nearby town/;city closer to where they live !

No-one is travelling anywhere afaik. The protestors are all local. Worried about places in schools, housing availability, doctor and hospital appointments, and also the los of our trust-based society.

Grammarnut · 07/08/2024 16:45

Midlifecryses · 05/08/2024 15:10

@Grammarnut I’m also in the midlands. Live in the East mids but not far from West Mids. There was trouble in Tamworth yesterday, Holiday Inn was targeted, lots of damage. There have been protests and arrests in Leicester and Derby too.

I had not heard about Tamworth. It ties in with an idea a friend has, however, that the disturbances are where there are few immigrants. I think Tamworth must fit this profile in having asylum seekers boarded there, rather than a large immigrant population.

mitogoshi · 07/08/2024 16:49

? Cornwall is definitely one of the safer places.

The media is unfortunately stoking the flames by providing publicity for the thugs but it's actually very localised. Also in our city, the reported rioting numbers were actually very small compared to the 4x the number counter protesting. There's (according to local facebook) 1000 people currently surrounding the published target for today protecting it. 99.9% of people disagree with the rioters

Grammarnut · 07/08/2024 16:51

Dotto · 05/08/2024 13:37

There definitely won't be any riots in St Ives or Cornwall, possibly Plymouth at a push but still can't see it.

You are safe as non-white here.

You will definitely get mugged for your food by seagulls in St Ives tho, PP was not joking so be prepared! Also parking spaces and tables in town are impossible this time of year unless prebooked.

Edited

Right about Plymouth.

Cornwall is racist. Not everyone of course, but it is racist.

Some of the Cornish dislike anywho is not from Cornwall, not targeted at any particular group at all, just “not Cornish” generally. They don’t do much about it though, just have a moan about those from “up country” 😄

ForHeartyDreamer · 07/08/2024 21:54

I live in Cornwall and apparently there are planned demonstrations/riots across the county this weekend!

lowxwil · 07/08/2024 23:03

I live in Cornwall and honestly it is like a different country down here, would not know that these riots were happening without looking on news/online. I really doubt that anything will happen- coming from someone who has lived here all of my life. Hope you have a lovely holiday! ☀️

When/where are they meant to be and where have you heard this please? I'm also in Cornwall and have heard of nothing planned down here.

smaugbythesea · 08/08/2024 17:40

There are riots planned for Saturday in Penzance the next town over from st Ives

GenXtricks · 08/08/2024 18:55

I have not been asked to attend any riots. Recent invites include:
a pirate boat race
A cliff path run with a pasty as a reward
Help yourself from the community excess veg stall
Local revel , basically a fete with donkeys, skittles, etc
And we're gearing up for lifeboat day with the local veg show judging and duck race.
The duck race, is the most racist thing on the calendar

Thank you. Someone who understands that the op has a reason to feel worried.

I also live in Cornwall and I understand the worry but am just not hearing anything locally. Only memes about stuff happening far, far away. The kids are also tuned in and not picking up invites. We're so lucky to be observers from afar. The weather is a bit grim, hope it cheers up for you.

The biggest news is the search & rescue helicopter is out and those that haven't spotted the one way sign and got caught trying to u turn out.
