Cancel holiday to Cornwall due to riots?!

ShouldICancel · 05/08/2024 13:00

I've name changed for this as I feel quite silly even asking this! We're meant to be in Cornwall from this weekend for 7 nights and DH is saying we'll have to wait and see what happens with all the riots. For context, we're brown, but not Muslim (I say this because I know Muslims are being sadly targeted :( )

At first I thought DH is overly cautious (which he tends to be) and needs a reality check, but having said that, for the first time in almost 18 years I've felt a bit unsafe in the UK, so maybe I'm the one who needs a reality check.

While most of the news has focused on the riots in the north, I wanted to check with those in South (especially Cornwall) if you've seen any issues? Would it be safe to travel? My parents will also be joining us, but they will be travelling by train from Paddington. I'm hoping the train journey is safe. My parents don't live in the UK and are just visiting over the summer, so they do sometimes stand out more than me, DH and the kids.

TIA!

The uncertainty is already planted. And not be people who are rightfully afraid

And you just stirred it on. 👏🏼👏🏼

I have not been dismissive of OPs fears at any point.

But I am clear they will be fine. Perhaps you genuinely feel she has something to worry about in StIves?

Can't believe I'm writing this.

Cornwall is not racist. We have our fair share of idiots but they are n't necessarily racist.
It's tough living here as a minority as it would be anywhere. You end up representing your entire minority. Much like when I get was the only woman in IT, I was the go to expert for 51% of the population.
It's got a lot better, as has every where but Cornish people have been travelling the world for mining, satellite dish installation and surfing for decades.

Cornwall is racist. Not everyone of course, but it is racist.

anyolddinosaur · 05/08/2024 16:37

In March 2004 there were no asylum seekers in Cornwall (only info I could find, doubt it's changed) and there is no mosque in St Ives so where would they make a focus for a protest anyway? St Ives has narrow little streets and the police could control them easily, another reason why no-one with any sense at all would try to organise a riot there. OK rioters dont have much sense but someone would need to bus them in.

Dartmoor prison is currently empty because of radon. With the prison system currently overcrowded maybe all the rioters could be sent there,

Out in Leeds Saturday night supposedly a hotbed of rioting if you believe the media. Didn't see a thing. Although husband did take the older car into the town centre in case it was torched.

Enjoy your holiday.

The Leeds protests were at lunchtime. I was there in the anti-racism group. It was nasty but didn't get out of hand. Absolutely packed with protesters and police.

It had all gone by the time we went in. Not a sign.

So for the purposes of the OP ?

. Do you genuinely think OP should cancel her holiday to St Ives?

IsaidByeByeMissAmericanPie · 05/08/2024 16:41

I'm in the South west, not Cornwall though. Whilst I'm not going to deny there is a probably a fair few racist people down here and it's a very white area of the country, it is also not very populated so the odds of getting enough people together to have a riot/protest anywhere sw of Bristol is pretty slim.
I know there was a scuffle in Weymouth but tbh you get a lot of holidaymakers from cities there and I imagine that was more likely the issue, coupled with beer and the heat. So I'd probably avoid towns like that, weston-s-mare and Newquay.

It's also worth noting whilst the riots are horrible...they really haven't been that many people at all. A few hundred, not thousands.

Choochoo21 · 05/08/2024 16:45

fussychica · 05/08/2024 16:21

As far as I'm aware only place in SW that's experienced any trouble is Bristol.

There are plans to riot in Plymouth today and tomorrow and events that I had planned in Plymouth have been cancelled due to it.

St Ives will be fine be I understand OPs concern because many of these men will be getting the trains home.

I’m hoping Plymouth has a crap turn out of rioters as we don’t tend to get as much as other areas.

SallyWD · 05/08/2024 16:45

I'd go. My Asian DH is carrying on as normal and there are many black and Asian people out in Leeds, enjoying a sunny day. The racists need to see that they can scream and shout and smash things up but black and Asian people (and other minorities) are here to stay. This is your home. Most of us would prefer to get rid of the racist thugs.

I did already respond to the op that I don't think the Cornish are prone to rioting. But I would be watching and waiting, and more concerned about getting too and from St Ives. But all racism is likely to be amplified at the moment, and I don't know if I would want to deal with that personally.

UsuallyHappy43 · 05/08/2024 16:47

Please, please, please don't cancel your plans. No one in this country should worry or be afraid. The people involved in these riots are few and far between. The vast majority of people do not support this kind of violence and rioting. The riots are taking place in larger cities and certainly not in quiet areas like Cornwall, the Lake District or any other rural areas. As a British born Englishwoman of English decent, I am appalled by the behaviour of these thugs. Plaease don't assume we're all the same .... we are certainly NOT! xxx

Libre2 · 05/08/2024 16:48

Apparently “protests” are planned in Plymouth tonight. OP I am terribly sorry that you are even having to consider this.

Jennalong · 05/08/2024 16:49

Another Cumbrian / Lake District resident here , don't put off your holiday plans , I'm sure you will be fine .

RedToothBrush · 05/08/2024 16:51

Fluufer · 05/08/2024 16:18

Yeah because the Cornish love tourists at the best of times. It's a very legitimate concern.

Is it bollocks.

RedToothBrush · 05/08/2024 16:51

Obviously I hope you are right.

sunglassesonthetable · 05/08/2024 16:55

Well done @Fluufer I think your work here is done.

Planting fear.

mindutopia · 05/08/2024 16:56

I’m sorry you’re having to worry about this OP. We live in Cornwall and haven’t seen a sniff of unrest here. Generally everyone I personally know in our village is quite open minded (not your usual reform voting racist). We were in a popular seaside area (near St Ives actually) yesterday and lots of families of all ethnicities happily playing on the beach. I think it’s a safer place to be than many parts of the UK at the moment. Traffic is awful at the moment though. 😩

RedToothBrush · 05/08/2024 16:56

Fluufer · 05/08/2024 16:52

Obviously I hope you are right.

I am confident.

Doesn't match the profile.

People riot when they feel they have nothing to lose.

It's height of holiday season. Any Cornish even considering it know they have plenty to lose this time of year.

Plus issues are different.

Socioeconomic issues yes but different.

EverAfter01 · 05/08/2024 16:56

I would have said Cornwall would be fine. However the bbc news is saying not to travel to Plymouth due to planned protests today. Yes I know Plymouth is not in Cornwall but I would be aware of your journey and keep an eye on the news. Also I would not want to be near a hotel or accommodation where migrants are placed (we have one in our town) as it could be a target.

We are in st austell at the minute and it’s dead quiet and safe. We were at a local beach earlier and plenty of multi cultural families on the beach. Everyone was minding their own business and enjoying the water.

Yes, it is, like a lot of rural communities. But they put up with tourists, and there have been no riots there. So, no reason not to go.

brightonrock123456789 · 05/08/2024 13:13

As a white woman I understand my opinions aren’t too relevant to your situation BUT I know Cornwall tends to be more full of poshos in August, those with 2nd homes, more guardian readers than hateful reform voters. Also, I’m so sorry this is happening and sending you and your family lots of love.

I don't think you understand class in the UK.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/08/2024 17:06

We’re Cornish. We live in the NW of England atm. I would advise you to stay away from the NW right now but really believe that you’ll be fine in the SW.

vickylou78 · 05/08/2024 17:06

I'm from southwest and live in Bristol and go south regularly. Op you'll be fine with Cornwall as it'll be full of tourists enjoying their holidays.

Likewise Paddington has lots of security and police about. Have a great holiday x
