Cancel holiday to Cornwall due to riots?!

I've name changed for this as I feel quite silly even asking this! We're meant to be in Cornwall from this weekend for 7 nights and DH is saying we'll have to wait and see what happens with all the riots. For context, we're brown, but not Muslim (I say this because I know Muslims are being sadly targeted :( )

At first I thought DH is overly cautious (which he tends to be) and needs a reality check, but having said that, for the first time in almost 18 years I've felt a bit unsafe in the UK, so maybe I'm the one who needs a reality check.

While most of the news has focused on the riots in the north, I wanted to check with those in South (especially Cornwall) if you've seen any issues? Would it be safe to travel? My parents will also be joining us, but they will be travelling by train from Paddington. I'm hoping the train journey is safe. My parents don't live in the UK and are just visiting over the summer, so they do sometimes stand out more than me, DH and the kids.

TIA!

Hopefully you’re feeling reassured about visiting Cornwall OP.

It absolutely breaks my heart that this is even a question though. I listened to a Muslim man on the news last night - he was born here and so were his children. He is genuinely scared but he was born and bred here, where’s he going to “go”?!!! Just awful for him, I genuinely felt close to tears.

Any anger needs to be directed at the (now-departed) Tory government for failing to process asylum applications efficiently and for spunking money up the wall on the ridiculous Rwanda plan. The rhetoric used by Braverman et al, plus the usual venom from the Daily Mail, has created a xenophobic rage.

I love my country - these idiots don’t represent me, nor the majority of us. I’m so sorry you’ve even had to consider this OP.

As above. This goes for me too . There was another thread yesterday started by a Muslim lady who was worried about going into work today because of all the trouble. It's shameful that in this day and age, people are being made afraid to live their lives because of the colour of their skin. The thugs responsible for this need locking up.I know it's easy for me to say, but if people are afraid to leave their homes because of them, then the thugs have won - and we don't want that to happen. Have a wonderful, relaxing and above all safe and happy holiday OP💐

I'm in Cornwall, no riots that I've heard.
Enjoy your holiday!

sunglassesonthetable · 05/08/2024 15:53

*It's not that the OP would be in danger in Cornwall, but the journey down could be a problem.

I'm certain parts of the UK the thugs are stopping cars to check if people are white. Dragging brown people out of cars and trashing the cars and attacking them. My husband despite being English certainly wouldn't pass the white test. I wouldn't want him to drive in the UK right now or be alone.

If you can stick the motor ways I think it's fine but if you have to drive through cities it might be a problem.*

Please don't spread fear! This is NOT happening over the UK!

It happened as an awful isolated incident in Middlesbrough !

This is how rumours spread!!!!

In Cornwall currently. There’s no riots. No mention of riots and holiday makers a plenty going about their days as normal

wellno · 05/08/2024 15:55

The idea of a riot in Cornwall is laughable. I'm reading some of these threads in horror, and feel so sorry for those of you living in places where there is genuine fear.

Demonhunter · 05/08/2024 15:55

WYorksTemp · 05/08/2024 13:59

There were reports in the Metro, Daily Mail, Mirror, etc.

It was yesterday while they rioted, no way it could happen on a normal day as the traffic in Teeside is mad busy during the week.

sunglassesonthetable · 05/08/2024 15:59

This is the incident. Yesterday in Middlesbrough . Disgusting and appalling. But NO ONE was dragged from their cars and It is not happening anywhere else.

It is so irresponsible to be saying that on a public forum.

Go to Cornwall - there won't be any riots. And anyway if there are, just stay away from
Them, simple.

Enjoy your holiday.

BrendaSmall · 05/08/2024 16:01

How ridiculous!
we’re going to a Holliday Inn Express in a few weeks in London, and we’re not even considering cancelling it!

Yousay55 · 05/08/2024 16:02

I am so sorry that this is even a question you feel the need to ask.
I think the vast majority of all people anywhere, will welcome you and your parents. I would go.

crostini · 05/08/2024 16:06

@sunglassesonthetable

Please don't accuse me of spreading rumours. That is not my intention.

This is actually happening. I have seen video footage of this happening in Hull. Obviously no where near Cornwall. But this is the reality of the UK at the moment.

sunglassesonthetable · 05/08/2024 16:08

@crostini

Tik Tok news?

Fluufer · 05/08/2024 16:09

Cornwall is always a bit racist, but I don't think they're really the rioting types. I'd steer clear of Plymouth (but that's Devon).
I have a black DH and mixed kids, and although we're not the targets (yet) we are watching and waiting before going anywhere.
I am deeply ashamed of our country today.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 05/08/2024 16:09

We are currently in Rural North Wales. MIL lives here so we have been a million times. My parents have also gone up several times. No issues at all in 20 years. I'm also brown (not muslim) and have never been concerned (although none of us can speak Welsh so who knows?). It did cross my mind this week though for the first time. We're here anyway. I haven't been out as the weather is appalling but I'm not staying in all week. I'm sure StIves will he fine, especially during tourist periods.

crostini · 05/08/2024 16:09

I do not have tik tok. You are being dismissive and naive.

Dartmoorcheffy · 05/08/2024 16:10

I'm in Devon, it's absolutely fine here and in Cornwall.

Lemonlettuce · 05/08/2024 16:12

I was born in this country in 1991 and have always felt that Britain is my home. I love my country but this is the first time in my life that I genuinely feel scared to be a Muslim in the UK. I know the rioters are a tiny minority but it seems like they’re becoming more and more emboldened every day and their threats are starting to feel more and more real.

How have we moved from the horrific murder of 3 young children to this? I feel for those families- their grief has been hijacked in such a horrendous way.

I hope you are still able to go on your holiday OP and enjoy yourself.

PemberleynotWemberley · 05/08/2024 16:12

I'm just on the Devon side of the Tamar. I think you're more likely to be bothered by people anxious to show they don't support the racist thugs, and wanting you to tell them you don't blame all white brits. Honestly, I think you'll be welcomed with open arms.

I'm so sorry this has even crossed your mind- please don't cancel your holiday.

Fluufer · 05/08/2024 16:12

Literally just heard Devon and Cornwall Police warning of "protests" in Plymouth today. Unclear exactly what 96% white Plymouth is rioting over...

sunglassesonthetable · 05/08/2024 16:13

do not have tik tok. You are being dismissive and naive.

I am being dismissive but not naive .

This is not routinely happening in the UK . People are not routinely being stopped and dragged from cars. That is what your post implied.

It's just stirring fear.

I doubt OP would go anywhere near a riot.

JamSandle · 05/08/2024 16:14

No it would be fine. Let's face it, in this world anything can happen at any time. You can't put life on hold.

Choochoo21 · 05/08/2024 16:14

This isn’t the video I saw of someone getting dragged from their car.

I’m not sure what city the one I watched happened it.

I definitely think avoiding any of the planned riots is a good way to stay safer because people are being attacked.

Movinghouseatlast · 05/08/2024 16:15

I live in Cornwall and can assure you there are no riots here. Everything is so far away from everything else that even if people felt like rioting they would have to travel quite a long distance to meet up with like minded people.
