Cancel holiday to Cornwall due to riots?!

ShouldICancel · 05/08/2024 13:00

I've name changed for this as I feel quite silly even asking this! We're meant to be in Cornwall from this weekend for 7 nights and DH is saying we'll have to wait and see what happens with all the riots. For context, we're brown, but not Muslim (I say this because I know Muslims are being sadly targeted :( )

At first I thought DH is overly cautious (which he tends to be) and needs a reality check, but having said that, for the first time in almost 18 years I've felt a bit unsafe in the UK, so maybe I'm the one who needs a reality check.

While most of the news has focused on the riots in the north, I wanted to check with those in South (especially Cornwall) if you've seen any issues? Would it be safe to travel? My parents will also be joining us, but they will be travelling by train from Paddington. I'm hoping the train journey is safe. My parents don't live in the UK and are just visiting over the summer, so they do sometimes stand out more than me, DH and the kids.

TIA!

Very amusing, you ve just backed up every single thing i said: pirates and customs 100s of years ago, utterly irrelevant to the people who live here now & less than 20% ID as Cornish.... so the chances of you running into someone whose ancestors were 'wreckers is beyond remote!

What happens in Plymouth wont make a jot of difference to how the "Cornish" will treat visitors, which is always very well.

Well no, because Plymouth is in Devon!

Please still come OP. Despite what you might see occasionally on social media, Cornwall is a very friendly, welcoming places. I’ve lived here nearly 15 years, in a small village, and have a foreign name / born abroad and have never felt uncomfortable or unsafe here.

Ditto in Plymouth, across the border. Even though there was unrest there for a few hours last night, if you were planning to visit Plymouth I’d still say go. Torquay / Torbay area, perhaps not.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday here in Cornwall and I’m so sorry you’ve had to even think about your safety in this country OP xx

There hasn't been any trouble in Torbay has there? Seems odd to say Plymouth should be OK when they've had trouble and Torbay isn't OK when there hasn't been any trouble there. Can't quite figure that one out.

sunglassesonthetable · 06/08/2024 20:25

Yes I was wondering about Torquay/Torbay...??

Yes, seriously. You seem to quickly and erroneously label people, without actually knowing any of them. Plenty of not-white people not only voted for Reform but also represented them - are they all racists too? Do you just get your opinions from the Guardian? Plenty of racists (of all skin colours) voted for Labour, the LibDems, the Green party, the Workers' Party, the Conservatives, and every other party, yet you seem particularly against Reform voters, even suggesting "they" don't holiday in "nice" places like Cornwall. Give your head a wobble.

Because the entire purpose of Reform is based on racism. Can you explain why you voted for it?

There’s a very odd phenomenon that people such as Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman seem to be influenced by. Not necessarily racism (some of it is religion based) but rather pull the ladder up behind you syndrome. Their families have benefitted hugely from immigration into the UK but they seem strangely loathe to afford the same opportunities to others. I really don’t get it at all.

I applaud immigration. The UK would be in deep trouble without it. Unless you think the numbskulls we’ve seen lobbing bricks at the police will settle down and fill all of the vacancies in our care, hospitality, retail, education, transport, engineering, science and medical sectors?

White Reform voters? Yes, racists (conscious or otherwise).

ScampiandChip · 06/08/2024 21:13

I saw a border force speed boat coming into a Cornish harbour today. There may not be pirate smugglers anymore but we still have people smugglers.

ShouldICancel · 06/08/2024 22:19

@MrsSkylerWhite The 'pull the ladder up behind you' is a very real syndrome. I've seen it within my community in 2016 when so many Indians voted for Brexit due to immigration, and I had countless arguments with them because they were also immigrants. I agree that there have to be some limits and no country has unlimited resources, but the ones I was arguing with were particularly against Eastern Europeans - if that isn't racism, I don't know what is 😞

I'm seeing the same in the US where people I have known for years are going to vote for Trump in the coming election! I'm shocked beyond words! Again, the only reason they're supporting Trump is because they think he's going to stop immigration!

I know, @ShouldICancel

His mother was Scottish and two of his wives Czech and Yugoslavian, as was.

Just 🤯

(Wonder where orange people hail from?)

DeadbeatYoda · 06/08/2024 23:17

I am so sorry that your family and so many others are feeling so vulnerable at this moment. They call themselves the English Defence League but they do not represent me or any England I know..
Cornwall is not a likely target this thuggery, I think you can probably go ahead with your holiday, please enjoy it. I hope you have a wonderful, relaxing time.

ChocAuVin · 06/08/2024 23:21

I’m so sorry you’re having to consider this. 😔

Have a wonderful time in Cornwall and relax, far from the nutters.

TheNextStep24 · 06/08/2024 23:26

We returned home yesterday from a week in Cornwall.
Everyone there is busy surfing or body boarding. They're also getting in to this new craze of e-surfing and I saw a lot of them practicing this.
They're not rioting.

There was a similar thread from someone wondering about their plans to visit various places in the NW...after reassurances from people living here it turned into a discussion about donkey stoning 😂

Due to travel to the NW of England for a week - would you still go? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/5135162-due-to-travel-to-the-nw-of-england-for-a-week-would-you-still-go

Why? Because if you are a person of colour or wear a hijab, it is scary. Very lucky you can not understand that.

MadameMassiveSalad · 07/08/2024 07:53

I think you'll be fine there op.
Horrendous and sad that this is even a thought.
Sending so much love to you & your family x x

Well no, because buttered toast is a delivery mechanism for jam, whereas a scone with jam is a delivery mechanism for clotted cream. The jam stabilises the scone so it doesn't crumble to pieces when loaded with creammm.

Love the "scientific" explanation! I can't understand people who don't get this - Buckingham Palace I'm looking at you!

Thisismyusernamenow · 07/08/2024 10:00

This is nonsense. You put the cream on first, approximately two inches thick. If you try to put cream on top of the jam then it doesn’t adhere properly because the jam is too slippery.
Ratio of cream to jam is also important. 98% cream. 2% jam.

Iwasafool · 07/08/2024 10:06

Would anyone turn down a scone if the cream and jam had been put on the "wrong" way round? Pass it to me as I couldn't care less, I just enjoy the bloody thing.

sunglassesonthetable · 07/08/2024 10:08

Sorry sorry sorry OP !!!I can't stop my fingers!!I'm derailing . I can't read this nonsense and not type. I hope you have the most relaxing break and can mentally leave behind the vileness of these awful riots
BUT

ALWAYs

JAM THEN CREAM .

THAT's IT.

I need to make a confession. One that will shock my Cornish descendants.

I don’t like scones. I also don’t like pasties.
I do like saffron buns though, so hopefully that appeases their spirits.

There is a protest planned for this weekend in Penzance! It’s going around Facebook today, warning people to stay away! Not sure how true this is and everyone is a little shocked down here!!
