Cancel holiday to Cornwall due to riots?!

ShouldICancel · 05/08/2024 13:00

I've name changed for this as I feel quite silly even asking this! We're meant to be in Cornwall from this weekend for 7 nights and DH is saying we'll have to wait and see what happens with all the riots. For context, we're brown, but not Muslim (I say this because I know Muslims are being sadly targeted :( )

At first I thought DH is overly cautious (which he tends to be) and needs a reality check, but having said that, for the first time in almost 18 years I've felt a bit unsafe in the UK, so maybe I'm the one who needs a reality check.

While most of the news has focused on the riots in the north, I wanted to check with those in South (especially Cornwall) if you've seen any issues? Would it be safe to travel? My parents will also be joining us, but they will be travelling by train from Paddington. I'm hoping the train journey is safe. My parents don't live in the UK and are just visiting over the summer, so they do sometimes stand out more than me, DH and the kids.

TIA!

Thanks for the support! It feels so odd to be worried about this... I've never ever felt out of place in the UK. In fact, I would even say I'm more comfortable here than in my home country!

@Velvian we're going to St. Ives

Maybe you could contact the relevant tourist office in St Ives and ask for advice.
Also, could if there is a St Ives resident on here, perhaps they could post what it’s like. I hope you manage to have a great holiday with lots of jam and cream scones!
I’ve holidayed there several times, although not recently. The whole area is lovely and I would love to go back there.

Forestofwoodandsteel · 05/08/2024 17:11

Just been in Central London..no problems

cornishschools · 05/08/2024 17:12

Of course Cornwall isn't racist. Of course there are some racist people in Cornwall as, sadly, there are everywhere. But to suggest the whole county as a single entity is racist is deeply misguided and offensive.

I'm so sorry that you have to consider this at the moment. I live in a Cornish seaside town (not St Ives) and it is just like it is every summer. No signs of any disquiet or protest here.

Don't be so daft. The only riots you'll encounter in Cornwall is over parking and second homes.

This. Cornwall is fine, nothing down this way whatsoever.

I’m so sorry that you feel this way. I hope you enjoy your holiday.

Just park correctly and you’ll be fine!

I live in Cornwall and have heard of no riots whatsoever. In fact today the news is a anti-fascist group from cornwall will be travelling to Plymouth to challenge the demonstrations there. Enjoy your holiday!

GinForBreakfast · 05/08/2024 17:18

I'm in Cornwall. There are tourists from everywhere here and it's gloriously peaceful and friendly. Please come and relax and hopefully all the idiots and racists will have finished their nonsense by the time you get home.

SiobhanSharpe · 05/08/2024 17:18

Cornwall will be very busy, as it always is in the summer, so you are far more likely to get caught up in a really annoying traffic jam on the A30 than in any kind of riot unless there's a county-wide shortage of oggies or clotted cream, my lover...

There were some pretty raucous beach parties late at night and into the small hours in Polzeith in late June early July but the coastguards said the police would be patrolling every night come the summer holidays as it’s been a problem there for a few years. Idiots inhaling those little canisters or whatever it is, leaving bbqs buried in the sand for any poor barefoot person to stand on, broken bottles, loud music etc. I was pretty shocked.

I have to say there were only a handful of black and brown faces but the locals seemed incredibly friendly and helpful and I can’t imagine any issues or riots.

I live 5 mins from Harehills in Leeds and do feel cautious about going to hospital appointments there at the moment. I’m also Jewish and feel very uncomfortable going past the pro Gaza protests in the city centre. Generally feel very unsafe as a Jewish person and hate that Muslim people are going through such a grim time in the UK. We are hate targets but aren’t responsible for wars or the ridiculously chaotic and ridiculously slow immigration system.

OP I hope you have a lovely holiday. I think you are a lot safer in St Ives than in a lot of other places here.

Protest in Plymouth tonight supposedly but I doubt any protests will happen in Cornwall.

I live in Cornwall and feel safe here.

I am more worried about the traffic congestion with boardmasters in the next few days 😂

Well, don't take all of the cats, OP...

VividQuoter · 05/08/2024 17:42

No. The UK loves Indians and Asians and Middle Eastern . Some Spanish and Greek look dark. Don't be worried. Cornwall is the end of the world for many , even you can read it on here....:) - enjoy your lives ! Put some crucifixes on top of your blouses and tops and go in peace

Cornwall, totally angelic place

Crumbsalive · 05/08/2024 17:57

Just seen that there was some sort of riot in Looe at the weekend. I think you will be safe enough!

What do you mean?

cantwait4orsummer · 05/08/2024 13:08

We're putting our plans on halt for Lake district next week, I wouldn't risk it.

Really ?

stimpy1 · 05/08/2024 18:18

In Cornwall at the moment, my husband is.mixed race and really don't think you need to worry at all x

ilostmyhearttoastarshiptrouper · 05/08/2024 19:25

There is absolutely no reason to cancel holidays in the Lakes! I don't think they'll be rioting on the streets of Bowness to be honest!

Lindy2 · 05/08/2024 19:52

I'm near St Ives. Everything is calm, safe and pleasant.

Please don't cancel your plans. There's no reason to at all.

Please carry on with your family holiday plans and enjoy being in beautiful Cornwall.

None if us should let the idiot rioters change our normal way of life. It's not theirs to take away.

moonlightandsunbeams · 05/08/2024 20:02

I’m in St Ives, it’s busy and full of so many visitors from different countries, regions, speaking different languages and wearing every sort of outfit; it’s bustling and as peaceful as it can be here in August! Have a wonderful holiday!

ScampiandChip · 05/08/2024 20:49

I’m in Devon at the moment and watched the regional news tonight. There was supposed to be a national racist group turning up in Plymouth. They halted all public transport in, laid on loads of police etc. The only people who got in were the local anti violence people waving love not war banners.
Enjoy your holiday.

As a potential “hateful Reform voter” and married to one (who, incidentally, reads the Guardian), I can assure you that plenty of us visit Cornwall in August, and manage to disguise ourselves as perfectly reasonable and ordinary people. You’d be surprised at just how many people you think of as nice, are really hateful underneath all that banality 🙄

seriously? 😳

Wildehorses · 05/08/2024 21:33

Not in Cornwall but just across the Tamar bridge, things have turned nasty …. news.sky.com/story/uk-riots-latest-far-right-southport-live-13186819

Choochoo21 · 05/08/2024 21:42

As @Wildehorses said, things have got nasty in Plymouth but it seems so far the police are taking most of the aggression from the thugs.

Here is a photo from earlier on.

The top group are the anti-riot group (the good guys) and the bottom group are the racist twats (most of those people are just general public and not even in that group).

As you can see, the top group far outweigh the few idiots that hold such disgusting views.
