I’m already fed up of Starmer as PM

Semi- lighthearted, I know it’s early days, but I’m not convinced of Starmer as an effective leader
He reads from his notes even when giving a short speech; if he really believed in what he is saying, why the need?
He doesn’t seem to have the leadership X factor and doesn’t seem to have a grip on the ongoing riots
Bright new start for UK? Doesn’t feel like it

As long as he makes decent decisions then personally I'm not arsed if he uses notes or not to give televised speeches. I'd rather clear, concise comms rather than a lot of the previous ones we had with Boris et al; not bothered about the 'leadership factor' as long as he's a strong leader.

Good decisions and strong leadership remains to be seen though...

happybluefern · 04/08/2024 17:15

Yeah bring back Boris and the Peppa Pig World ad libs.

blossomismyfriend · 04/08/2024 17:16

We knew this though. There's no reason to expect strong, decisive leadership from him. At least he's not a Tory psychopath I suppose.

Advisors will tell him what to do.

I’m pleased with all the changes he’s made. What would the Tories be doing if they were in charge of the riots?! Arguably their discourse has helped to overheat the issue, I’m thinking of Braverman’s ‘invasion’ rhetoric.

StripedPiggy · 04/08/2024 17:21

Starmer has been PM for 30 days. I’m sure we would all have preferred it if he had completely transformed our country, got our economy firing on all cylinders, solved all our deep seated social problems and achieved world peace in that time.

But, given that he took over a complete shitshow, and he is a human being not God or Harry fucking Potter, we have to accept than he can’t actually perform miracles. So let’s give the guy a chance, shall we?

MeandBobbyMcGoo · 04/08/2024 17:22

I think he's doing a good job. He seems like a strong manager and an adult at least.

Notreat · 04/08/2024 17:25

I think he has shown his strength and integrity. He is calling out the rioters for what they are something some other politicians won't do.
He is honest and hardworking something we haven't had for a long long time.

StuckintheRutt · 04/08/2024 17:28

I think his speech the other day was inflammatory, and has not helped at all

Ironically these are the people labour is supposed to be the voice of, the under dog, the disadvantaged, the poor.

Who represents them?

I feel so sorry for the police right now and where is the army.

Sirzy · 04/08/2024 17:29

What do you expect him to do though? What is the easy answer to solving this mess which you think he is missing?

AgnesX · 04/08/2024 17:29

I'm not looking for charm etc. and as for the riots, well that's a legacy from the previous 13 year long shit show.

Give them the chance.

CassieMaddox · 04/08/2024 17:30

I love him. No mealy mouthed "we need to understand concerns" - he's being zero tolerance on racism and racists. Acting to keep all British people safe.

I don't give a shit if he has notes. Substance over style every time, it shows its important to him to make sure he covers everything he needs to.

From the BBC: He promised that the "violent mob do not represent our country" and said: "If you target people because of the colour of their skin or faith, that is far-right and I’m prepared to say so." 👏

That's exactly what I want our PM to be saying.

Yes, his speech on right wing thuggery as protests/ riots and fighting isn't just right wing.

The divide is horrendous and he certainly isn't going to help situations by pointing the finger one way. Everyone involved in disorder needs to be reprimanded.

Police officers stand guard as a large group of angry-looking counter-protesters push against the police cordon on the day of a protest against illegal immigration

Clashes in Bolton between rival groups after protest - BBC News

Police introduce temporary orders in an effort to deal with violent unrest in Bolton.

StuckintheRutt · 04/08/2024 17:31

There is an element of far right thuggery here but I bet many of these disaffected young men wouldn't know their arse from their elbow on these issues.
It's something to do like football violence.

Why not reassure them, I kmow you feel xyz... We labour speak for you, please go home and we will make levelling up your areas a priority etc.
We are working to "stop the boats" " this is what we have already done.

Etc.

Calling them all far right thugs is not helping at all.

Stereotyping much? Far right racism and violent disorder is not to do with class, its to do with dickheads. Cop on to yourself.

You’re mixing up working class people who work hard and pay their way with the EDL. Those people “protesting” are far right and he is right to call them that. It would be wrong for him to pander to them.

scalt · 04/08/2024 17:33

Some people who speak without notes tend to waffle like mad, and sound like a comedian desperately improvising to fill a time slot.

Let him use notes. Again, after Saint Boris “oh he’s so funny!” or “oh, he had so much charisma!”, I never want a funny or charismatic prime minister again. Bring on boring.

StuckintheRutt · 04/08/2024 17:33

@CassieMaddox.. So you think all these young lads have signed up to a far right ideology?
Or don't you think they are disaffected, cut off and uneducated and angry?

StuckintheRutt · 04/08/2024 17:34

Well he certainly isn't calming them down.
Many people have been on TV saying this is a problem.

coffeeandteav · 04/08/2024 17:35

Oh yes bring back pork markets!

It's nice not to have a clown in charge.

EasternStandard · 04/08/2024 17:36

It’s not his manner, I tend not to listen anyway, but he is facing a growing problem

Far right racist rioters are setting fire to libraries and you think it's the prime minister saying the law will be applies to their actions who is the one holding the petrol can...?

Eh? Seen as he is the PM, calling out the rioters is literally the very least he can do. Bare minimum

He hasn’t got a grip on the situation and the longer it goes on, the more it highlights his lack of authority and poor leadership

I didn’t like Boris waffling on, but Starmer would sound more convincing if he didn’t frequently refer to his notes when delivering a pre planned, short speech
i suppose we’ve gone from one extreme style to another
Boring with a little sparkle would be good

It’s far right rhetoric that’s led to this. Racist, far right, fear mongering, dog whistle bullshit. Whether they signed up for the politics or not that’s what they are do and I am so thankful that we have a PM who is not afraid to call that out. I don’t give a shit how ‘disaffected’ these thugs feel. I’ve spent the last 15 years of Tory rule, Brexit, Trump, Boris feeling completely unheard and disaffected and I managed not to set fire to things.

But let’s just be thankful they didn’t throw some flour at some old stones ey? Because that really gets universal hatred thrown at you apparently.
