I’m already fed up of Starmer as PM

Semi- lighthearted, I know it’s early days, but I’m not convinced of Starmer as an effective leader
He reads from his notes even when giving a short speech; if he really believed in what he is saying, why the need?
He doesn’t seem to have the leadership X factor and doesn’t seem to have a grip on the ongoing riots
Bright new start for UK? Doesn’t feel like it

We don't need sparkle we need policies and actions.
Junior Doctors strike settled in 3 weeks. Public bodies listened too. Stuff like that.

JennyForeigner · 04/08/2024 17:40

StuckintheRutt · 04/08/2024 17:31

There is an element of far right thuggery here but I bet many of these disaffected young men wouldn't know their arse from their elbow on these issues.
It's something to do like football violence.

Why not reassure them, I kmow you feel xyz... We labour speak for you, please go home and we will make levelling up your areas a priority etc.
We are working to "stop the boats" " this is what we have already done.

Etc.

Calling them all far right thugs is not helping at all.

Yeah, just turn a blind eye to the first burned corner shop or two, promise the EDL a cookie. What can possibly go wrong with that?

CassieMaddox · 04/08/2024 17:40

StuckintheRutt · 04/08/2024 17:33

@CassieMaddox.. So you think all these young lads have signed up to a far right ideology?
Or don't you think they are disaffected, cut off and uneducated and angry?

I think abusive men like to nurse their grievances to justify being violent and angry, and that we should do our best to discourage them from that.

Lundy Bancroft calls it "the garden of resentment" in "why does he do that"? That's exactly what I think has been going on. Farage, Robinson, Braverman et al. have been planting the seeds and nurturing the plants, now they are bearing fruit.

I think weeding the garden by being no tolerance of these ridiculous entitled attitudes is a better approach. I'm not pandering to abusive men.

Starmer has been PM for 30 days. I’m sure we would all have preferred it if he had completely transformed our country, got our economy firing on all cylinders, solved all our deep seated social problems and achieved world peace in that time.

But, given that he took over a complete shitshow, and he is a human being not God or Harry fucking Potter, we have to accept than he can’t actually perform miracles. So let’s give the guy a chance, shall we?

This. I'm not a Labour voter, but Labour has been elected and we have to give KS a reasonable chance.

If things are no better in 6 months time, then is the time to start questioning his leadership

StuckintheRutt · 04/08/2024 17:42

@JennyForeigner if it was me, not as pm, I would get the army in ASAP.

But unfortunately he is in flaming the situation.
He is not helping. Clearly.

You are in favour of breaking the law and inflaming the situation further?

StuckintheRutt · 04/08/2024 17:43

@Meadowfinch unfortunately there seems to be lots of clips going around re what they said in opposition.

StuckintheRutt · 04/08/2024 17:44

I can't believe the police are being left with this and have no back up

Unfortunately the previous government dramatically cut funding to the police, and cut many roles.

CassieMaddox · 04/08/2024 17:46

It's their job stuck, they are trained to deal with it and are very good at it. Watch Stan Collymore's video to see.

The best help to the police would be if people unanimously called out the rioters so they stopped doing it.

I know, they look really ill equipped, and the mobs are becoming more aggressive

OK. You personally would send in the army to deal with criminal actions, instead of checks notes allowing the police and judiciary to manage the situation utilising learning from the London riots and the court system. Because the army have guns, I guess?

If that's your idea of not inflaming the situation, Kier Starmer must have made one hell of an atypical speech.

Treacletoots · 04/08/2024 17:48

He doesn't have the X factor? What is this, a television contents to find a pop singer. FML.

Id like to see anyone read a speech without notes. If thats the worst you've got then I think we'll be fine. Id much rather have a competent, considered proven leader than those smarmy self serving Tory *** any day.

Any fool can give in to their demands!

StuckintheRutt · 04/08/2024 17:50

@JennyForeigner.. Guess what?

I'm a random poster on the Internet. I'm not an expert in crowd control and policing. I'm chatting with other random who also are not experts.
Why not dial down your tone a little.

cromwell44 · 04/08/2024 17:51

KS is right to tackle this with full force of the law. Fascist mobs cannot be tolerated.

This is violent men trying to hold the country to ransom. Give us ‘our’ country back? They are pissed off because they don’t dominate. It’s not just their country but true to form, nobody else’s rights or opinions matter. They’re not happy, so nobody else can be and they will throw bricks, burn libraries, facilities, shops, cars because they are in mob and they can.
The ideology here is male violence being harnessed by bad actors, at home and abroad.

absquatulize · 04/08/2024 17:51

CassieMaddox · 04/08/2024 17:48

The police have for the last week consistently impressed me with their bravery, restraint and professionalism.

Hugely impressive.
Makes you proud to be British.

SleepQuest33 · 04/08/2024 17:51

You don’t like that he reads notes???

as far as I remember they all read notes, hec I even remember when Boris the buffoon kept saying “forgive me forgive me” when he couldn’t find the right page.

im not sure what news channels you are watching but I think he’s a fantastic leader and we finally have grown ups in charge! Long May it last.

dottiehens · 04/08/2024 17:53

Wasntmeanttobelikethis · 04/08/2024 17:37

I didn’t like Boris waffling on, but Starmer would sound more convincing if he didn’t frequently refer to his notes when delivering a pre planned, short speech
i suppose we’ve gone from one extreme style to another
Boring with a little sparkle would be good

KS also looks very grumpy already. Must be smelling the coffee and now holidays deprived. Hopefully he sticks around before throwing the towel.

midgetastic · 04/08/2024 17:53

Well I think paying junior doctors more was the right thing to do so I don't think that's foolish

And I don't think handing over the reigns to the thugs is the right thing to do so I don't think that's foolish

What else has he done that isn't foolish ?

coffeeandteav · 04/08/2024 17:53

When stop the boats is the rhetoric from the previous government its not keir's charisma thats the issue.

absquatulize · 04/08/2024 17:53

Given that you are not an expert in crowd policing and theories of rioting, why not trust that the experts who advise the police in these things know what they are doing?
Certainly in the actions of the police over the past week if one knows what one is looking at one can clearly see the police have learnt considerably from previous riots and changed their tactics significantly.

midgetastic · 04/08/2024 17:55

And I don't want sparkle I want effective and efficient

I don't want gift of the gab, I want truthful and reliable

Seems a lot of people are upset he won the vote but too many people have been struggling for too long to allow the right wing to continue to destroy our lives

X factor is a colloquial term to describe a certain something that elevates someone to a compelling presence on a stage
It’s not the worst thoughts I’ve got on Starmer, just a talking point
I’m pleased to see back of the Tories, too, just listening to PM’s speech today, thought it was lacking in conviction
