I’m already fed up of Starmer as PM

Semi- lighthearted, I know it’s early days, but I’m not convinced of Starmer as an effective leader
He reads from his notes even when giving a short speech; if he really believed in what he is saying, why the need?
He doesn’t seem to have the leadership X factor and doesn’t seem to have a grip on the ongoing riots
Bright new start for UK? Doesn’t feel like it

I think it's a bit pathetic to be dismissing him after 1 month for not possessing a magic wand, a time machine and a crystal ball.
Notes means he's taking it seriously, unlike Boris make it up as I go along Johnson.

Well I think paying junior doctors more was the right thing to do so I don't think that's foolish

And I don't think handing over the reigns to the thugs is the right thing to do so I don't think that's foolish

What else has he done that isn't foolish ?

He has also got rid of the Rwanda scam, so he wasn't foolish about that either.

@JennyForeigner.. Guess what?

I'm a random poster on the Internet. I'm not an expert in crowd control and policing. I'm chatting with other random who also are not experts.
Why not dial down your tone a little.

Sorry, I thought you were an international expert on the policing of civil unrest in the context of multi-generational dispossession and far-right networks.

If you're just an internet random wanging on about something you don't claim to understand, then by all means, carry on.

KS also looks very grumpy already. Must be smelling the coffee and now holidays deprived. Hopefully he sticks around before throwing the towel.

Think he’s off on his hols tomorrow

I'll leave my judgement of him as PM until after 4 weeks of running the country.

However I couldn't give a shiny shite he reads from notes.

Better than forgetting what salient points he wants to make and talking about a fictional pig themed park.

Not dismissing him; not pathetic; just making an initial observation on his shortcomings, as one does on these forums

He's a politician, or as he says, a public servant. Not a performer.

I want someone of substance, confidence, competence and empathy in a leader. He shoes all these qualities. In all honesty in my experience, leaders who perform to the crowd tend to be rampant narcissists, and I think we've all had enough of those.

The riots have kicked off simply because the previous government stoked up division to such a temperature, that sensing the new government won't tolerate such disgusting behaviour, they're throwing their toys out of the pram.

He's only been in the job a few weeks! Give him a chance! Confused

StaunchMomma · 04/08/2024 18:04

At least he feels like a competent adult with an actual conscience!

I love him. No mealy mouthed "we need to understand concerns" - he's being zero tolerance on racism and racists. Acting to keep all British people safe.

I don't give a shit if he has notes. Substance over style every time, it shows its important to him to make sure he covers everything he needs to.

From the BBC: He promised that the "violent mob do not represent our country" and said: "If you target people because of the colour of their skin or faith, that is far-right and I’m prepared to say so." 👏

That's exactly what I want our PM to be saying.

You love him? Are you his wife?

Is now a good time to remind ourselves of Boris Johnson's betrayal of Nazanin Zaghari- Radcliffe?

Sometimes a speech is so important, that ever word matters and so it should be delivered entirely from notes, so that one has carefully considered what to say in advance, rather than making it up as one goes along.

I know they should have gave Liz Truzz longer too!….oh wait. 4 weeks is long enough to have the measure of the man

DrRiverSong · 04/08/2024 18:09

I like him. He’s calm, prepared, and clearly takes advice from experts where needed. Just because he isn’t a showman doesn’t mean he is a bad leader. We can learn from some of the shit show we saw under Boris.

BonifaceBonanza · 04/08/2024 18:11

Why on earth should Labour be the champion and spokesperson for riotous thugs?

Did I miss the day during those 4 weeks when Starmer crashed the economy to please gamblers from Tufton Street?

Blinky21 · 04/08/2024 18:14

I've been pleasantly surprised, the closure of the Bibby Stokholm, renewed support for Palastine, removal of tax relief for private schools, pay rises for public sector staff and a probable ban on trail hunting are all things I support. I don't care if Starmer uses notes. The problems we are seeing today are caused by Patel and Bravermen and Sunak and their years of divisive rhetoric over immigration

RainintheDesert · 04/08/2024 18:15

We've had sparkle, and look how that turned out.

KS's sound bite is Far-Right but he hasn't connected how these disaffected men feel in modern Britain. Not saying it's right, but they don't feel that the Tories or Labour speak for them. Certain actors who have fled to Spain etc turn up online and say, we know how you feel, and you need to blame minorities because they are the root of all your problems, they come here and get a free house and free money and there you are, struggling to house, clothe and feed yourselves and your families...is it any wonder Reform did well in the last election? They came second, a lot, and now have four seats. Not bad for a new party.

The current riots are a legacy of Tory rule, because they didn't give a fuck about these towns, they closed the services that people needed during some of the toughest times recently, they buggered up the NHS and shot the economy. But NF, TR and all those sorts say, you can't get an appointment at the GP because of immigration. No, it's because the Tories ignored the NHS, and ignored industrial relations, and ran it down.

So yes, these populist, racist spokespersons are whipping up hatred and preying on the white population to divert their ire from what is really going on, to hating minority groups. And they are bloody good at it. Stockport was the match.

Add to that the internet misinformation and it's a disaster.

Apart from the PMs lack of understanding of the fundamental issues and reducing it down to two words, I think he's trying the best he can under the circumstances but he doesn't have a magic wand and all this clears up. This will take time. And if things calm down, great, but will the root cause of these ideas die? I doubt it very much.

It’s playing out with people rioting instead though

Not sure it’s over

Mercurial123 · 04/08/2024 18:20

OP, you prefer someone like BoJo who just waffles and makes stuff up? You'll probably feel better over at the DM or Telegraph?

Wildywondrous · 04/08/2024 18:20

I voted Labour for the first time in my life purely so I could say there you go, let's see if you really can do better, knowing that it was highly unlikely.

I didn't expect to see them falling from favour quite so quickly.

Keir seems a nice enough guy but he has no authority, he reminds me of my high school biology teacher who was a lovely chap but the class had no respect for him because he was a walkover.
Keir looks very out of his depth when he gives speeches and doesn't inspire me with confidence.
