I’m already fed up of Starmer as PM

Semi- lighthearted, I know it’s early days, but I’m not convinced of Starmer as an effective leader
He reads from his notes even when giving a short speech; if he really believed in what he is saying, why the need?
He doesn’t seem to have the leadership X factor and doesn’t seem to have a grip on the ongoing riots
Bright new start for UK? Doesn’t feel like it

It may have escaped your notice that Starmer is the leader of the party that won a resounding majority in the recent General Election, this suggests to me that he and his party are very much in touch with the views of the nation.

Did you stand in the General Election? How many votes did you recieve?

They received fewer than 20% of eligible votes.

They did not gain anything like resounding majority support. They simply benefited from a quirk of the FPTP system. No other government in the last 100 years has received a lower % of the vote.

StuckintheRutt · 04/08/2024 18:59

@RafaistheKingofClay I don't know what media your on but what I'm seeing is some nazi type swastika older men and many many young men.

Notonthestairs · 04/08/2024 19:00

Hardly a quirk of FPTP when it's been our system of democracy for over a century - or were all those victories quirks too?

Is Stan Collymore some sort of law and order guru now? Does he also make videos on how the police handle domestic abuse, I wonder? 🤔

No. He just put up a video showing the police at work. 🙄

Northernnature · 04/08/2024 19:04

Yes see my previous post about the numbers (9.5m v 13m for thatcher all through the 80s and 17m for Brexit). Labour should have stormed it after the shambles of the Tories but were/are massively unpopular. Set to get even more unpopular unfortunately for them.

Roryno · 04/08/2024 19:04

I didn’t vote Labour (or conservative) but I think he’s doing ok. Who cares if he needs notes. I don’t like the brash showmen (Tony Blair or BJ, for example) who can say any load of bollocks and Joe Public just sucks it up. I’d rather someone real. Anyway it’s too early to see. Nobody was going to magic everything ok straight away. Personally I don’t think anyone can do much with the state of the U.K. and have people like them.

Leniriefenstahl · 04/08/2024 19:04

StuckintheRutt · 04/08/2024 18:53

@Leniriefenstahl oh and what makes a yobbo? I could be wrong but they seem to be late teens. Do you think they are out yobbing and putting their place at Oxford at risk?

Lol. Quite a few are middle aged and older. Other cheek of the same arse from those respectable lower middle class Brexit party types up here who’d never riot but hated immigrants and people of colour. I doubt many of them have a place at Oxford but they won’t all be poor and downtrodden.

Why ? Methinks you live in an echo chamber.

The riots are not taking place because he lacks leadership - it's because people don't like that they lost fairly

👏

Northernnature · 04/08/2024 19:06

Yes well who he is responsible for the state of the UK @Roryno (clue the people in power cut the last 25 years - the UK was a decent place to live in the 80s and 90s when I was young).

BettyWhiteIsGreat · 04/08/2024 19:06

I think he's been quite impressive, certainly feels like sensible adults are back in charge and actually making decision rather than the utter shambles of the last few 14 years.

UnbelievableLie · 04/08/2024 19:07

My favourite take on MN this week is all the idiots claiming that calling people out for being thick racists is why they're thick racist 😂

Depends how you define majority. Labour got 34% of those that voted, but a win is a win.vThat said Starmer fought bitterly for a re-run of the Brexit vote as "only" 52% voted for it (despite 52% being a real majority!) This is what I cannot stand about the man, his double standards. When the working class vote and get a majority of 52% he won't accept it. But he is more than happy with his mere 34%. Hypocrite.

Then all the U turns prior to the election and since. Hardly surprised the working classes are now rising up under Labour's watch, Labour have form for despising the working classes. Not to mention their hate for pensioners (let 'em freeze!) and in fact anyone that has bettered themselves. Hate hate hate is all they know.

Labour won a lot of seats but they didn’t get a lot of votes. Only 20% of people eligible to vote actually voted for them, which means that 80% didn’t. Big majority but hardly any support from actual members of the public.

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/08/2024 19:10

When did Starmer fight for a rerun of the Brexit vote?

Araminta1003 · 04/08/2024 19:10

We have not had a war where young men had to be called up for almost 80 years. These young rioters seem to be gagging for a full on war and have invented an enemy. We should be training them up properly instead of allowing this. They are disillusioned and need an outlet. Someone needs to give them something to do. Want to fight for Britain? Go on then, let them join the army, pay them and teach them some discipline and respect. Then let’s see what they are made of. Writing them of as thugs just fans the fire.

Amazing that 52/48 was a huge majority and meant the losing side should "get over it" and "back Britain, but a huge 412 seat majority and more than 10% lead over any other party is not good enough and therefore rioting and thuggery from the losers is understandable.

I might start calling it "2 tier democracy".

MeandBobbyMcGoo · 04/08/2024 17:22

I think he's doing a good job. He seems like a strong manager and an adult at least.

I’m not sure what good job he is doing.

We appear to have nationwide riots ( slight exaggeration)

We are paying nurses and doctors yet more money, and they already paid very well indeed compared to those of us in the private sector

He’s taking money away from old aged pensioners, many of whom can ill afford this, particularly in rural Northern areas

There is no end to illegal immigration, and we seem to be getting rid of the housing that was used for them, and the deterrents to stop them arriving here

They are also exaggerating the poor state of the economy, and even the Bank of England, is reiterating this, because inflation is falling

And GP’s who I haven’t seen in years, are going to strike over money. Our local doctors, all went part time, because they didn’t need full time jobs anymore, as they are paid so well.
You can see a nurse, possibly not.
And it was Labour who brought in the stupid system giving them such power and money we are stuck with it

Notonthestairs · 04/08/2024 19:11

It's becoming very obvious that right wingers are just terrible losers.

Lab & Lib Dem's hold 500 seats between them and yet apparently the country is supposedly desperate for a right wing leader. What rubbish.

Northernnature · 04/08/2024 19:11

No it's worse than that @Zebedee999 he only got 20% of the voting public (the 34% is people who bothered to vote). Really can't see why people think their hero is any more sensible than Rishi (neither of them are fyi).

Are you comparing an outright 52/48 result with a 20/80 result and claiming they are similar?

I trust maths is not your strong suit.

We've had 14 years of terrible government. I have confidence he's far better but he's not got the wow factor.

😂
I'm claiming that "you lost, get over it" should apply equally to all voters.
Otherwise it's 2 tier democracy.
