Time For The Army?

RisingSunn · 04/08/2024 16:18

I’ve just seen footage of rioters setting fire to the Holiday Inn in Rotherham and actually running inside.

What are they planning to do - beat or kill every migrant family?

Its just awful. Is time for the Army to be brought in?

Yes absolutely, they need sorted out.

Fififafa · 04/08/2024 16:27

100% They are going to end up killing someone if tougher force isn’t used against these racist thugs. I’ve also seen videos of baying mobs trying to drag Asian taxi drivers out of their cars.

BeachBae · 04/08/2024 16:46

Yes, the army should be able to remove all the machetes and swords.

Kebarbra · 04/08/2024 16:51

Starmer has given a press conference saying he isn't scared to call it far right thuggery, are you expecting them to take actual tangible actions as well as giving meaningless press conferences?!

Getting the military in (always the Army never the RN or RAF isn't it) would esculate things, absolutely should have planned for an escalation and police resources should be ready to deploy from other areas though- why isn't this happening? Shame we don't have Boris' water cannons to immediately get the area dispersed.

CoffeeStars · 04/08/2024 16:53

There can't be enough police to deal with the chaos? They're being pulled away from dealing with other serious crime.

Call in the army, Keir!

GrazingSheep · 04/08/2024 16:56

@Kebarbra
You mean these ones ?
Three unusable water cannon bought by Boris Johnson when he was mayor of London have been sold for scrap, at a net loss of more than £300,000.
Johnson bought the crowd-control vehicles from the German police in 2014, in anticipation of social unrest, without checking whether they could be used on London’s streets. In one of his most humiliating episodes as mayor, the then home secretary, Theresa May, banned them from use anywhere in England and Wales. It left the capital’s taxpayers with three expensive white elephants.

The Police have said themselves this afternoon they have enough resources and are being supported by other agencies, if they don't feel the Army is needed then why would Starmer override this? There are plans within the police for public disorder such as this, there are in the military as well but it doesn't mean it's appropriate or possible to simply call them in and it'll be hunky dory.

Do people really think those dealing with this (not the government necessarily) aren't considering other options? Ah hadn't thought of that thank goodness MN put forward the suggestion.

Isn’t he on away holidays?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought he might be away.

FragileWookiee · 04/08/2024 17:00

Two people were beaten with a hammer yesterday, one looked in a real bad way.
Keir Starmer hasn't got a clue what to do.
There's men aimlessly running the streets with machetes and the police are just standing by watching. Not just at these riots either. Machetes fights on seafronts (Southend) where there's families on holiday.

Yeah fuck it, if people are calling for the Army to be deployed then bring in the illegal cannons too!

He just gave an utterly pointless speech from No 10, so he is still here (for all the good it’s doing).

zzplex · 04/08/2024 17:01

Scaremongering much?

The police are dealing with it. If a local force is stretched then they will be assisted by resources from another force, as happened in London in 2011.

Anyway, what good would the army be - they're not trained for these situations, unlike the police.

As for police resources being diverted from other crimes, yes to an extent, but that's the case whenever a serious crime happens. For example a murder takes a lot of resources, so no wonder they cut down investigating burglaries and shoplifting.

@Kebarbra

Army troops, RN and RaF obviously have vastly different roles and therfore training
and skill sets.
Should military support be required I'm not sure what use a pilot would be

The Army are trained to manage public disorder but not as extensively as the Police are and not following a quick can you come and help out lads phone call.

Please don't bring logic into this thread though, hyperbole only please.

Ah yes everyone in the RAF is a pilot. If only RN had something alone the lines of the Marines rather than just seamen specs, be cool if the RAF had police and infantry too.

1dayatatime · 04/08/2024 17:10

Only the blissfully ignorant metropolitan left would think it's a good idea to call out the Army (which is predominantly made up of poor white working class men) to do battle with poor white working class men, all the deriding them for being thick, poor, white and male.

I think calling out the Army to stop the riots is an all round bad idea and might not work out as you expect.

No, you were being ignorant. It's okay though plenty of people are when it comes to the military.

TheNoonBell · 04/08/2024 17:11

Deploying the army would probably make things worse.

EasternStandard · 04/08/2024 17:12

Not sure the army are the way to go

They can’t be everywhere and people can just move wherever. They would have to end deployment at some point and then it starts again

Plus training / purpose as in pp

And it could just inflame things

Ted27 · 04/08/2024 17:15

@Kebarbra
I can assure you I'm not ignorant of the military

This is a civil disorder situation, I don't think anyone really wants to see the military in any shape or form on our streets.

Neither do I, as I've said in my posts 🫠
